I've honestly never been to an anime convention before. Shameful, I know. My family doesn't travel at all, and the closest convention to where I live is in Toronto. Would love to go to a convention one day, but currently don't have the finances for it (cosplay preparation, food expenses, hotel, travel expenses, etc).

I've been to A-con and Animefest.

Animefest is coming up this weekend, BOO YAH! I'll totally send pictures to this here forum thread.

That said, I'm making plans to go to another convention before A-con, but I'm not sure which. Anybody know of a half-decent sized Anime convention that'll be a fun one to go to? Preferably within a reasonable distance? eeeeeh, never mind. All the states near enough to Texas to want to drive too are all too lame to have a good con.

That said, my friend and I plan to attend the next...or next next Comic-con, because really, the con of cons? Of course we'll want to go! We just have to make sure our cosplays are of a proper level before we tackle the big leagues. A-con is the proper training ground you see, it's a Cosplay bananza! I SAW A GUNCANNON AT A-CON THIS YEAR! It was so crazy.

And as of this moment, Animefest Dallas is now over.

Jebus, the Sheraton hotel was a bit...wonky. 3 smallish floors for the convention, giving us escalators to go up and down. Decent enough but with the amount of people at the con those double Escalators repeatedly broke all weekend, so a lot of walking up to the 3rd floor video rooms, or down to the 2nd floor dealer room, then the panels spread across all 3....ugggg.

That said, I saw some good shows that I've put off, but nothing out of the ordinary as Crunchy Roll was how we got to see them shows. Altho I'm not sure how we saw Dennou Coil, but I don't think that ever got a dub, it's been several years since I saw it all at my first con. I got some Genkishen Season 2 and Dog x Sissors watching, which was neat. My sister and I team-watched WATAMOTE and that became fun with her around, she really relates with the show....and the jokes are hilarious.

I didn't carry no big moneys with me, but I managed to get the 3 things I said I had to buy if I found at a con. This includes a Shinji and Kanji figure, from Neon Gen and Persona 4 prospectively. And a few prints of some awesome sexy characters and I'm in.

To finish my "OMG A CONVENTION!" lines, I played wing-man to my Canti Cosplay partner. We spent the entire night previous to the con, up till 5 in the morning, painting and fixing up the costume for perfection. I know some of you don't get FLCL because you don't think it makes sense due to your lack of intelligence, understanding, cultural knowledge, and or being racist against robots and asians(slash/insult) But damn it, IT'S CANTI! When them pictures come in I'll gladdly add them, but I'ma just throw in one of us building the damn thing.

Glad you had a good time. Conventions are sweet because you get to see all the people who also like anime. Although personal hygiene leaves a LOT to be desired...

I would almost disagree, but then I think of the sweating Canti. His pants were SOAKED. Once I get a hold of the pictures we took with the "Awesome 1,000 Dollah" camera I'll totally show them to you.

And dear god, at least 4 people wanted to get "an all around shot" of him, ask a few questions, and gave him a business card and said look yourself up on youtube in a week. We're waiting for that.

But yeah, so much sweat. And while I've not gone to an out of state convention yet, I'm of a doubt that "con flu" would ever be an issue of me. Unless I go to a con in Europe...that might take me back a little, but only a little!

One large problem however, is Anime Fans tend to be a little socially awkward. I'm similar of course, but I'm the guy who reads social cues about people, then bitch slaps them to see how they respond. The ones I'm talking about are those who're afraid to speak out or are obviously having fun but don't want to show it. You know, those who totally made a kicking costume but kinda don't want to be recognized with it? Only a few of those, but I like'em.

But this led to the largest problem, the Con-staff. Dear god it was among the worst Con staff I've had in years! The Hotel management also seemed a bit, disconnected with the crowds. We had lost our "expensive camera" and bag's of stuff in one of the Panel rooms, after during the panel they shoo'ed everybody out to prepare for something else. While the camera was in no danger, you don't take chances with stuff like that. Your stuff stuck in a room? You get someone to help you go get it. We went to the Con-operations room and encountered the very type of person you don't want to be in charge of helping you
To elaborate, we walked in to find some teenager trying to access the lost and found up there, as he lost his badge. He didn't realize both the badge-name AND your real name was on each badge, so he kept insisting what his badge name is. The ungracious con-support -volunteer's acted like it was some kinda game. With "well if you can't prove it's you....haha...we can't help you" It's hard to show contemptual snickers, but they had it in spades. I had to show the kid my badge and point out where the real name is so he could use his real name. In which the support responded with "oh we have his badge, we just have to make sure its' his" to which, assholes.

Following his plight came ours, in which they asked a similar question. Well, can you prove the camera is yours? Can you prove you really have a camera? Well if it's safe in the panel room with our staff, why can't you wait until the room is open again? Surely you don't need it THAT badly right?

Oh the rudeness. I was ready to contact a higher authority than this guy, but my sister gave him a tongue lashing along the lines of "It's our stuff, we're here to get our stuff, it's important so we're going to get it now" Only with more than a few curse words and a much harsher tone than text describes. I'm not big on the cursing so no reenactments from me. Luckily another member of the staff got on it, they got some keys and lead us to the panel themselves to help out. We got our stuff back no problem, but it put a real damper on Sunday's mood.

I know a bunch of you might not care for con stories, but I'm like, super hyped from said con still. And what fun is going if not for the stories to tell at a later date?

Con staff here is usually pretty decent. The hotel staff at Naka-kon this last time was SUPER accommodating. I was pretty surprised at how good of a job they did.

I don't see a lot of shy people, or maybe I just never noticed them. If I see people sitting alone, I'll usually strike up a conversation, because I always go alone. Everyone I've talked to held a conversation with me, no problem (Although some of them were weird and made me regret talking to them). It's mostly people who need to calm down and learn how to act in public. Yeah, it's a con and it's supposed to be fun, but damn, act at least HALF of your age!

Indeed indeed! Thats what I mean by social awkwardness, the "how to act in public" is mostly due to the inability to read social cues. While i pride myself on reading them, I also pride myself on ignoring negative ones, thus making me seem extremely awkward, which I am, yet....sociable. I believe my teacher put it best, "You're a socially awkward guy who doesn't act like it" So you get the awkward, but not the fucks to give.

The con-staff at A-con HAD to be on their game, those crowds ATE THEM ALIVE!

The hotel staff was useful to me, on Sunday evening I dropped my PSP in the main event hall and had to get back in. The Con-staff was inside the room cleaning up or something, setting SOMETHING up. So I walked right up to a Hotel Manager and two cops, and informed them that i needed to get into the room. At first they had a simple "um, we're not con-people" but it's rather easy to inform them that they're in positions extremely capable of helping me. One short walkie-talky to a janitor near by, i got into the room and grabbed my PSP and a Dr.pepper I also forgot. We saw several other items people left and I asked them to take that to the lost and found so, it's a win win for me and who ever bought that Asuna figure.

I SAW AN ART-OF-WAR FIGURE IN THE DEALER ROOM! It was expensive, and was Griffith, but it had a wooden box. AN ART OF WAR FIGURE! OOOOh, one day, I shall grab one.

Just saw the Anime-fest picture gallery.

I don't know who took the pictures at the Con, but he should stop taking pictures of half naked women, and take more pictures of the con itself.

Seriously, for every cosplayer you had five random pictures of women taken. Hell, you could see he tried to get up-skirts at some of these.

and only white women too, this guy be racist!

Has anybody ever volunteered for a Con before?

What's wrong with white people? The real question is: Where are all the Asian girls?
