I was wondering what anime you guys think would be really successful in the west if it were a live action tv show like breaking bad or heroes instead of anime. The only ones I could think of would be death note or mirrai nikki.

Yup it is. I'm actually pretty excited to see it.

I would say Black Lagoon, Ghost In The Shell (either the movie or the series), DEFINITELY Death Note, or Psycho-Pass (basically Minority Report).

Beyond that, I'm not sure there are enough shows with strong, adult story-lines that would get big over here if they were live-action.

P.S. Is this at all related to Gigguk's latest rant video?

Yes, I agree with him that a lot of people are missing out on great stories just because they either don't know about it, or they just don't like animation

While I agree, I think it is just as much the anime industries fault. If we didn't have such a weird, bordering creepy collection of shows (and trolls who show people Boku No Picu for their first anime), I think that people over on this side of the Pacific would be more open to watching it.

The things that seem to hold most anime back are just how far from realistic-ness you can get in anime. I mean this is a good way, since anime is a great medium for telling stories that are unconnected to reality, but most aspects that anime emphasizes (children and teenagers that fight monsters/crime, various ways of breaking physic like people jumping 50 ft, flying, and just general anime character distorted reactions like faceplants, chibi forms, etc.) simply do not fit into a live action world most of the time. While live action can take supernatural stuff fine if grounded, and comedic stuff might transfer well(Kung Fu Hustle/Matrix is probably the limit on breaking physics) the farther you get from reality in live action, the less it can be believed in and accepted.

That said, off the top of my head Black lagoon, Monster, Berserk, Jormungand, Baccano!, Durarara, possibly Fate/Zero are all anime that might have a decent shot at being transferred to live action, although they would all likely have to receive some kinds of slight edits somewhere or other to increase believably.

Edit: and yes, there's a lot of anime that shouldn't be translated simply because they would be creepy as hell live, such as Bakemonogatari and it's sequels, or Higurashi, or anything downright ecchi like Highschool DxD. As fun as they are... I have serious doubts they'd transfer well anyways, and in a lot of cases copying scenes from the anime with people of the same age would likely get their directors and anyone who bought the anime arrested.

I would say something like trigun or maybe high school of the dead, High school of the dead could be possible, just a zombie movie with some high school students and a teacher trying to get out of a hellish area, I could easily see it as a movie.
Attack on titan would be cool but idk how that would be pulled off, as long as it wasnt cheesy like godzilla movies are.
I'm sure theres some other good ones i could name but high school of the dead and trigun would seem like good candidates

Darker Than Black would be great if they could pull off the action scenes.

I think something like servant x service and working would be good sitcoms if they changed a little bit of it

Pretty much. Most non-seinen would make horrible live action movies. Unless of course you liked http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jn6ZVO_Tg0 . . .

There might be something workable as a live action series in Shonen/Shojo somewhere, but I can't think of it off the top of my head (Well, possibly Natsume Yujin-cho if that counts, but the creature designs would be difficult to make believable, and the mood is something I feel is pulled off better in anime). But yes, live action generally means a more serious tone than animated if you want to make it work, so Seinen is most of what might work.
