I have made this thread because there seems to be a lot of people that do not understand the different types of episodes of an amine are and it seems not to be explained much into detail. Over the years i have developed these categories to help people understand what types of episodes they are watching so they can complain correctly about an episode instead of always assuming its filler.

So here I'm going to break it down for you:

Canon Main Story episodes are episodes of the main story line that are directly related to the manga

Anime Main Story episodes are episodes that are part of the main story line but not directly related to the manga

Main Back-Story episodes are episodes that shed light on the main story line such as background info of the main characters or enemies (may or may not be directly related to manga)

Back-Story episodes are episodes that shed light on characters that are not involved in the main story line or are episodes that are about main characters but do not related to the main story line (may or may not be directly related to manga)

Filler episodes are episodes that have nothing to do with the main story line (manga or anime) or any back story related information
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember some episodes may incorporate several of these categories together

The most important thing to remember about an anime is that its an anime and just because it is based off of a manga does not necessarily mean it have to follow said manga all the way through. An anime is basically another way of telling a story that may incorporate new information and may eliminate stuff from the manga as long as the main story line structure stays the same and the key information is still there in some shape or form.

If I had missed anything let me know and ill look it over and possibly put it in.

Don't forget to categorize "Ending" episodes! The ending episode is an important part, and not every last episode includes the ending! Gundam series often have a 3-4 set up for the ending episodes. They often spend episodes 30-45 building the scenery before BAMN, 4 big wammero's and 1 last minute tie up before the final death including battles.

Sure it's not exactly it's on category, falling into Main Story, but endings are generally regarded separately for a reason.

I'd also include Introduction episodes as a tier. Meeting the crew of the Straw Hat pirates, the reveal of the Band of the Hawk, and every character you see in the first episode of Mobile Suit Gundam, as well as the most important filler characters, take their own episode that isn't backstory but front-story.... it's the introduction afterall.

From seeing Sanji walk into the room, looking around at Griffith's camp, and how an entire episode of Zeta Gundam revolved around meeting and showing off the power of Haman Karn. These to little to move the story, but sets up so much to be explored.
