I love a diverse range of characters in an anime but one archetype seems to .. annoy me somewhat and it's none other than tsundere. I find the typical tsundere well there's no why to describe it, just a complete bitch really, majority of the time they will act cold and harsh but then have no reason to warrant such behavior. I ask this because I recently finished Hataraku Maou-Sama and I found the character Emi completely unbearable. So yeah what does everyone like about tsunderes and why ?

Ummm...if you paid attention at all to the Emi's backstory, her behavior makes total sense. I guess I can understand if you didn't like her character, but you can't pretend like she had no reason to warrant her behavior. Is she tsundere? Well, it's more like TSUN(dere). But she's not the way she is without purpose or reason. Imo, Emi is a great example of how to do a tsundere character well. She's not a typcial tsundere, by any stretch of the imagination. She is the one who has to overcome her dislike of Maou; it's not Maou trying to win her over despite her being mean to him.

Back when the show was going, we had a lot of good discussions about how she could possibly overcome her bias against Maou, which I think is a good thing. For most tsunderes, you don't ask how the tsundere is going to come to terms with their own behaviors, but how the protagonist will win them over.

I'd have to echo what I've seen some others say. There is certainly a balance with tsunderes.

There's something satisfying when a tsundere finally comes out of her shell and confesses.

That being said, I've started watching Oreimo and honestly Kirino has been soo mean and nasty that she's beyond any salvation in my opinion.

Of all the over-done, cliche, over-the-top, ridiculous, unrealistic, and predictable character archetypes in existence, Tsundere is probably my favorite. The key is in the dere. Nobody likes a Tsun-Tsun -- except perhaps masochists.

Edit: Like anything, a story element can be done well or poorly. I've seen some bad tsunderes, and some artful ones. Like most things, it's more about execution than it is about whether or not the character type is "inherently" good.

Not all tsunderes are bad, there are many types of tsundere in the anime world. The ones that bring barely anything to the table are the ones i don't really care for, that's why im surprised by all the Taiga lovers.

I love tsunderes. Well, the good ones, anyway. The bad ones get really obnoxious after a while... usually in harem shows......... Honestly everything is annoying in most harem shows from the main character all the way down the rest of the bland cast.

In other types of series, though, (where harems are not the focal point even if one technically exists/are non-existent) the tsundere archetype can be amazing, and they are usually the stand-out characters of the respective series.

lol how do quote good ? (second time using the forums) xD

You hit the "Quote" button and it puts it in the correct format. The other way is to check the box next to "Quote" and click "Quote Selected" at the bottom of the page to quote more than one message. (Only really works if they are on the same page... I frequently will click quote and save the text to use if I find more than one message I want to quote on different pages. Kind of like what I did here...)

Taiga is one of the finest characters around. She is complex and very well crafted. The journey from
in Toradora! is expertly written. While it is clear from very early on that the two are the OTP, it is thoroughly believable when they take so long to figure it out. The character of Minori's motivations are slightly better fleshed out in the light novels, but the interplay between Taiga, Minori, and Ryuugi is one of the finest love triangles I have seen.

I have a soft spot for Tsunderes, though sometimes they are poorly done. Some of my favorites are the male tsunderes though, like Shinichi Chiaki in Nodame Cantabile and Miyuki in Red Data Girl.

tsunderes are pretty interesting because they can't say what they want, they have their own view of people, and they do things different from normal people. i find it funny in a way.

Well, lets just get out the way that it was blatantly obvious that
I truly wanted to believe she is as complex as some say but she just came off as a helpless, cruel character that begrudgingly assisted Ryuugi with Minori whenever he would practically beg. Don't get me wrong i don't dislike her as a character anymore than the other characters (excluding Minori, she was irritating except for the " You Liar" scene) and the show was great and well-made but i felt like she was just as cruel as say...Kirino from Oreimo.

The ending is much better in the novels, but it is "essentially" the same as the Anime. (The kiss scene in the anime is much better than the novels though...)

(BTW - this is REALLY a spoiler. If you plan on reading the novels, don't click. If you have no intention of reading them and want to know how the novel and the anime differed, be my guest!)

It is much better than the anime ending, but the anime ending has the same basic theme. If you don't see Taiga's growth as a character during the course of the show, there's not much that can be done, but one of the main reasons Taiga is so beloved by fans is that she is a true tsundere. Her tsun in massively tsun, but her dere is gasp for breath-curl your toes-clutch your chest-get weak at the knees-and-melt into a puddle on the floor-DERE

And that is the draw of the Tsundere in my opinion. The extremes of emotion. They hide their true feelings behind a facade of toughness, but when the facade cracks and the wall comes down, the emotion released is awesome, and, if done correctly, comes across as genuine and realistic.

They are not restricted to anime and manga, either. My kids both really like the Percy Jackson books, and the character of Annabeth is a classic tsundere. In Star Trek: Voyager, B'Ellana Torres is totally a tsundere! They are everywhere!

Tsunderes are deferred gratification. The tsun might be comedic, sad, or even painful to watch, but when the dere arrives, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

Yes, i can definitely agree Taiga is a TRUE tsundere and her dere side was very cute, I just didn't agree with her actions but i can respect all those who love her.

A recent tsundere i want to point out that i was interested in would be Satilizer from Freezing. She came off as such a harsh character that wanted to avoid everyone, but when the MC got closer to her, she showed here dere side and i was so unbelievably moe. Its funny since all the other characters were pretty bad and irritating so she was the standalone character of interest for me.
