(MakotoKamui here - this is a great idea for a general thread, so I'm updating it a bit and making it a sticky.)

This is for all the people who want to cosplay, but don't quite know what to go as. As a group, we know a LOT of anime characters, so we can probably fit just about anyone to a character they might like to play!

In general:
* If you want to, post a picture of yourself

* Maybe list off some of the anime, games, or other things you might want to cosplay from, or like to watch/play in general

* If possible, list the way you want to make your costume (will you make or buy, if it needs an outfit, can you or someone you know make it, are props okay, etc)

* Hopefully get some great ideas on what to do for your next con or event!

Please, no body shaming, trolling, or harassment. This is meant to be a safe place where people can ask questions and get useful suggestions.

Hey guys, its my first time doing this so bear with me.

October will be here before we know it and i dont know what i should be. Ive never cosplayed before and i was just wondering what the communities opinion was on what i should cosplay as!

And everyone can do the same for each other as well. Just type in I need help on a reply and everyone should help each other in brainstorming great ideas based on your looks and body type!

Hmm.. are you looking to buy a costume, or make one? If you're thinking about making, can you (or do you know someone) who can sew, or do armor/prop work? Or do you want to start learning those things, if you haven't already?

Sorry for all the questions! Just want to make sure I can recommend something that'll work

Well i was looking to make my own and also buy the necessary parts. i can sew a little bit but i think my arts and crafts should be able to cover for that lack of skill a little bit.
I really didnt even have any ideas of how to make it. I need to figure what i should be first lol. Then i guess ill figure out how to make the costume from there.

Gotcha! Well, Luffy - One Piece might be good, if you're interested in that series.

Souske Sagara - Full Metal Panic would also fit your build, and has so many outfits that he's as easy or as hard as you'd like to do.

Going a bit old school, Van - Escaflowne might work, too.

Do any of those sound interesting?

Very nice! i dont know why Luffy didnt even come to mind.
Thanks. That one is deff going to be up in my top selections when making the final decisions, if not the one lol

And the pic that you chose as the example makes me feel a little more confident i can pull it off lol!

Well, hello there handsome!

I don't know many muscular characters in anime, most of them have slender frame.

But if you're a fan of Final fantasy, maybe you could dress up as Noctis Caelum? He seems to have a little of bicep like you do.

I'll suggesting doing Canti from FLCL. Using EVA foam and a lot of Hot glue, you only need the head and fore-arms to be a reasonable cosplay. The chest, legs, and shoulders are just bonus points.

And unlike Luffy or Kirito, people gonna want pictures of you. Because you put work into your cosplay, but you didn't go full on "gundam" and make yourself so awesome you're unapproachable. Ever seen a cosplay so awesome you just stood to the side? You don't want that for your first costume. You might be ok with the "it's cosplay, it works" characters by why bother!? You gotta go full ham on this!

I'll also suggest Fairy Kirito if you're a SOA Fan, as long as you include the wings and ears you'll do far better than Generic Black Coat Kirito. He also has a larger prop sword and Leafa or Queen Fairy Asuna also stick out far better.

AND you'll get along with every Link and Zelda in the area, pointy Ears represent!

If you're really wanting to do One Piece I'll totally suggest Franky, but you gotta wear the speedo or it doesn't count. Franky in trunks isn't cool.

I really need to finish Escaflowne.....

If you're gonna Escaflowne, do it right!
Ok, so very few people would recognize the robot......

Ok, I got one. Go as Kanji from Persona 4.

He's not only amazing, he's also very amazing. And every Protagonist cosplayer you meet would want a picture with yah.

DBZ was the first thing to pop into my head lol. Well with it being the first anime i really got into. and also inspired working out lol. ( who doesnt want to look like a super hero?) But i also felt it was going to be played out by some of my other friends. And they arent into compromising so that we can have a DBZ squad. everyone wants goku or vegeta lol

@Felstalker
Im digging the Canti idea from FLCL. I havent seen that in so long that I almost forgot about it. And ive never seen Persona 4 but i feel i should, now that i think i can pull him off. Just need to bleach my hair lol.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the possibilites guys. This brainstorming session is awsome!

I've actually learned something about Canti recently! A friend and I spend the 2 months between A-con and Animefest (Both conventions in dallas, where we live near) to build a Canti costume out of EVA foam. We went with red canti.

Unfortunately we never managed the legs and guitar props.

But that worked in our favor!

Canti has become the greatest cosplay to me just this recently, due to psychology. Everybody wants a picture with Canti. And Canti is just filled with energy and fun!

He's at that great point right before the Uncanny Valley as a character. He's human enough without being human. Canti's T.V. head also manages to provide a buffer between you and the fans. You're in a costume after all, and you get this feeling of freedom while cosplaying without your head showing. You're hidden, anonymous, people don't know you they know Canti.
At the same time, without the "Gundam-bot" size of Gundams, or the props of someone with weapons out the face like the Guitar, Canti was both Anonymous but...there.

You've seen it right? That guy in a full fledged costume al'ah Bioshock Big Daddy or such. You see this person Cosplay and you're thinking "woah, that cosplay is among the most amazing I've ever seen!"
And you think....I don't think I want to bother him with a picture. His cosplay is just too awesome to bother him for something so trivial.
I mean, if he was posing that'd be different, but he's talking to someone, I'd better leave him alone.

But that's the joy of Canti! At his best he's accessible! It's like that thing with the Guitars and Ukuleles! A Ukulele is more personal, as it's smaller and doesn't hide you from the crowd. While a Guitar is large enough for you to hide behind when you're playing music to a crowd. The Canti suit is like a Ukulele! People feel like they can converse with you, and you're anonymous enough act with purity.

I just got back from a con ok? I had a lot of fun, and my sister and I talked a bunch about how people socialize with cosplayers. People who took the medium route just felt awesome, while those who shot too high are unapproachable.

haha nice ive never been to a con or expo or anything but they all look pretty fun. They just dont have any where im at, and im assuming that the craziest ones are in the bigger cities like cali and texas and stuff.
And im not shooting down your canti idea but im thinking it may be just a little much for me. And most of my friends arent as educated with anime like the rest of us. Im sure no one in my group of friends would know who i was lol. (not that it really matters)

As the time goes im slowly leaning towards like street fighter characters lol (maybe RYU). But the search is still on!

Ryu works solidly! I only suggest Canti due to his recognition and silhouette. You won't miss him in a photo.

Everybody does Ryu however! He's a good choice and is never wrong, but why not throw the extra mile in? Crossplay Chun-Lee or M. Bison is where it's at!

You even get to shout PSYCHO CRUSHER all the time! AND you're able to pose with Ryu for photos!

And that cape!

Have you decided yet? I'm in the somewhat the same predicament lol... going to my first convention in October. I'm lean, 6ft tall, have a 6 pack and muscular. I was trying to find a good enough character to cosplay as, one that would also show off my abs lol. I was thinking about Gray from Fairy Tail, or Sinbad/judal from Magi... any other ideas?

You could do Tsume from Wolf's Rain. He's a character pretty much everyone would recognize but not one you see at cons very often.

Though, after reading the description of yourself, the first character that immediately came to mind was Nicholas D. Wolfwood from Trigun for some reason. I know he doesn't show his abs but he's an easy character to put together and pull off for a first time con goer.
