So I'm planning on going to Anime Expo 2014, my first con ever. It's a little ways away obviously, but I figure it wouldn't hurt brainstorming ideas now. I know next to nothing about sewing, costume making etc., but I'd want to learn and I don't just want to buy a costume already made. Buying accessories and small stuff like that is okay, I just mean not mass produced costumes that are all ready for you to wear. I have long dark brown hair, but I wouldn't mind wearing a wig.

I have a few ideas of characters I could possibly cosplay that (I think) wouldn't require a whole lot skills to put together: Sakura from Street Fighter, Sailor Jupiter or Mars, Hinata Hyuga from Naruto, a crossplay of Kotetsu T. Kaburagi from Tiger & Bunny.

If anyone knows of other simple, beginner friendly ones, please do share. :)

If you know Rukia, Soi Fon from Bleach, Yuki from Vampire Knight and (crossplay) Ciel Phantomhive then those are okay too.

My skin tone is not pale, so any characters that aren't super fair skinned?
I kind of failed the Kairi cosplay because I do look darker than her and this Sora looks fairer and more feminine than me lol
Also I can look boyish sometimes? So I don't mind crossplay either

Some people suggested Toph Bei Fong from Avatar but I didn't actually follow the show. Though I might consider it!

Here are some anime/games I'm looking into:

Anything other than this list is also good! ^^ Who do I remind you of?

i want to be a coplayer but im having trouble in choosing the right character/costume, i want to wear something simple though since im a tomboy, i would probably prefer something tomobyish but i could wear anything, except something that is too sexy like bikini or something that is complicated like a long dress.
I wish to cosplay as hatsune miku, tsubomi kido, Shirakiin, Ririchiyo, which one suit me the best? or is there anyone else?

Heya. Saw your post a while back, and nothing sprang to mind. Toughest part for cosplay of course is your build. Was watching a show and I spotted characters that could work quite well for a cosplay couple.

A possibility could Be Sig and Izumi Curtis from Full Metal Alchemist. You should be able to present as the pair quite well. Not sure if this is what you are looking for or looking for something more extravagant?

yup, at least you are planning early. I know people who decide right before thinking it will go quick, then end up so stressed out it is no fun. Well, the Crunchyroll 2014 shows will be starting soon and might be some new shows to inspire and make a good showing.

Well, one other recommendation, If you guys have watched Log Horizon on CR, could probably pull off a good Shiroe and Akatsuki team. Your girlfriend would probably be able to cosplay a very good Akatsuki.

How for-serious are you planning on here? First time cosplay or perhaps you just need pair ideas for your next costume?

And you know, what type of costumes do you want! We you talking something simple, or are you a dabbler with that EVA foam and want yourself some mecha's or armor?

Going to name off a few pairs off the top of my head.

More towards here, you'll have Spice&Wolf, who doesn't like a Holo cosplay? It's also not too difficult and is instantly recognizable.

Second up, we'll have Soul Eater's pair of Tsubaki and Black Star. Yeah Yeah the heights are off, but I think you'll pull off Black Star rather well and it doesn't mater what she cosplays or looks like, people will like her.

Next up in team pairs you'll have that properly suggested Shiroe and Akatsuki from Log Horizon, but between you and me I think you'd do better with Naotsugu and making some beastly EVA Armor, his deisgn is also rather simple despite being well, armored. So you can get away with first timing that EVA foam no problem.

Next up for costume ideas, you can always go with some classy Skyrim. Rocking out that Dovakin and Lydia combo that everyone is sure to love. You'll need a set of Iron, a set of steel for her, and a Helmet for you and BAMN, win win.

A little stretch for this one, but you can always go for a Kiritsugu/Saber team up cosplay, who wouldn't like that? You've also got Irisviel as a Cosplay option as well so take your picks! Then you have the Lancer/RIn or Archer/Rin or Lancer/that chick. Fate has a lot of options...and I'm not a fan of Gilgamesh so don't be him. I see him a lot because that sexy armor, and not everybody has the sexy chest the other characters tend to...show off. Kotomine would also be rather cool to see.

Kirito and Asuna have proven rather popular the past year, but Kirto and Asuna Elf-style is less popular, and stand out that much more. Last con I went to had about 10 Kiritos and Asuna's, but the Fairy Wings and Bust Sword don't lie, Fairy Kirito is visually more appealing, and who doesn't like Fairy Asuna/Fairy Queen? Additionally, Leafa stands out far more due to her Tinker-Bell esc-character design, and is always a good choice.

need any more suggestions? I'm sure Ic an pull out a few more.

I'll be honest, I was unable to name off most of those characters, and had to google them. Hatsune Miku is known to everybody, always a nice cosplay but are you sure you're up for that? Complication I see in that one. You're also rather young and while I assume you'd be going with someone else, I don't think the attention grabbing sexiness that is Hatsune Miku is suited for you. It's also rather revealing,

A bit of Crossplay here, but that's never stopped so so many others, but Lelouch Le Britannia would work perfectly and is rather simple. People would call it but they wouldn't bug you too much. It's perfect for a first time cosplay

Much Much Much better an Option however, is Zero! I'll tell you now, NOTHING is more liberating than a full facial mask such as Zero's. It plays to people yah dig? The mask seperates you and the audience, but it's not overwhelming. You're not a Gundam, walking around in a massive suit of Cardboard and Foam, people avoiding you and your costume like a fragile Kaji. You're just wearing a mask, they don't know who you are, but they know Zero....it's amazing.

A bit of rambling there...but I like a good Zero cosplay, because that Mask is just cool, and I've had great experiences with mask/helmet related cosplays.

The pics and your choice of show really lead to cosplaying strong female leads. Your favs lead to the more classical and action style, so not sure if modern and coarse is your style of show though.

The first that comes to mind is actually Revi from Black Lagoon actually. Key pieces for this costume would be her Tattoos being replicated, and if you can find somebody to do replica of her "Cutlasses" The twin 9mm pistols she uses.

If you wish to stay more to the fantasy, I have one that could be very interesting to cosplay.

A while back, a show called Moribito was created. An absolutely fantastic anime! Unfortunately the original DvD publishers went under. However, this year, the show has been picked up for Blue Ray and DvD, so should be a big hit, and not have 30 of them at the convention.

The Character is Balsa

Hiya! Hope I can help, what sort of genres or shows doyou like? One of the biggest parts of cosplay is enjoying and playing the character. Also, are you looking for something flashy and thinking of making props or something more simple and person oriented?

I am thinking of a few suggestions, but they are widely varied in genre

I like literally all types of genre, horror, action, comedy, theres not really many things from games, movies and anime and stuff that i don't like. I've thought about making props but obviously I would need to plan out and get the equipment and stuff but for the time being I'm looking more into simpler stuff so mainly focusing on clothes for the time being and then building up to using props.
I'm about 6 foot and not exactly skinny so I have a hard time figuring that stuff out X)
Any suggestions you have would be hugely appreciated even if they are varied it gives me something to work towards and build on
Thanks dude

Sorry about delayed reply. Well, here are a few to start that I think would be able to pull off without too much trouble, plus be easily recognized if done well. Toughest part will be finding and doing clothing alterations to match. I am 6'4 and so it can be tough finding characters to match, fortunately, that can be advantageous when going to shows because you can do stuff more unique! Spoilers hide sample picture.

So to start, something a bit more timeless, and also an antagonist which you probably can pull off pretty well! >:D

Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Cheap gas station sunglasses friendly too!

Probably one of the most memorable side characters:

Maes Hughes from Full Metal Alchemist

Something from a new show, but would be more difficult to pull off due to armor. However it could probably be affordably replicated by using paper mache and filler make a light and easily paintable suit of armor. Junk clothes are a good and breathable way to create the underlays. Also look for wide flat areas where cloth can be used in place of solid materials.

Trick to making mache models is finding good base to start with and mold or build off of. When ever I have, I start with stiff construction paper or thin cardboard and cut/tape to form a comfortable shape, then build that up. Experiment a little to make sure you can find a reliable way to form through paint to ensure no peeling or cracking. Also minimize wherever you can in the mache area to maximize breathability.

Naotsugu from Log Horizon

Places where cloth can be used instead of rigid construction would be the recessed portions of the bracers, the chest area of the armor, and the boots. Finding things that can work as a good frame can really make life easier. This is a more difficult and long term construction though.

For Video game routes, You could probably pull off a good assassin from the Assassin's creed series, or one of the earlier Snake From Metal Gear solid
