People are always raving about it, and it's on all 'the best anime lists'. I just don't understand.
I've tried to get into it but to me it seems boring and repetitive. But to be fair I'm only on season one.
I don't know if I should bother with it.

If you don't get Japanese comedy you don't get Gintama which is pretty much non stop comedy that is all.

i've finished it, much to my chagrin. it's not good nor bad, the serious parts are a joke, but the comedy is gold.

in a nut-shell, it's a long-running gag anime with a subset of a plot.

The jokes are kind of hard to understand if you don't know at least some japanese. For example, the title itself "Gintama" can be a joke. (It's shown later on though.) However, the beginning is, like you said repetitive. The later episodes get more serious, and you get more arcs as you go. It is funny in my opinion and the OST is nice.

Its a sad day to hear people not find the joy this anime brings us all.

We will never stop doing dirty jokes.

This anime is currently the funniest thing Ive found on this planet.

Um what? Japanese comedy is a play on words and what not. so LOL @ the replies saying if you don't get Japanese comedy then blah blah blah. Gintama is funny as shit period and is FAR from just Japanese comedy. There are some play on words here and there and some gags at famous japanese people but it makes funny of a lot of things, almost everything and the wacky characters make it enjoyable with their vast personalities. If you watch anime and live you should get most jokes & finally the serious arcs here and there are kick ass awesome

If you want repeated then look no further at all the slice of life and moe shit that comes out every season

You've just had it overhyped for you. You shouldn't watch it expecting it to be the greatest show ever, because then you'll only be thinking, "why isn't this the greatest show ever yet?" That's the best way to ruin a good show.

If you watch it with that in mind, it should be a bit more enjoyable. If you aren't sure when to give up, I'd say watch through episode 25 and then decide if you really like it or not.

If you don't like the gag-humor especially, then it's probably not the show for you. But it's one of my favorite shows of all time. The characters truly make the show I think. It just takes a little while to get to know them.

Indeed, Gintama is not for everyone. It's a pretty good show, but everything from its setting to its humor is pretty goofy, and if that's not your sort of thing, then it's not going to be good. Additionally, it does have a backstory that pops up from time to time, but for the most part every episode is its own self-contained plot, which means if you dislike such shows you probably won't like Gintama. It also feels like the sort of show you can get burned out on fairly fast if it's not your sort of thing. Personally I watch an episode or two from time to time, possibly go on a 10 episode marathon, and then don't get in the mood to get back to it for like 2-3 months.

Also, I wouldn't call it the greatest anime of all time, or even one of the top 10 from what I've watched(130ish episodes), but I also wouldn't say it's merely average either. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it an 8. Then again, the only comedy anime that trumps it for me is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, so it might deserve to be higher if you love comedy.

Well, the beginning is laying out the setting, getting to know characters, and whatnot. The jokes get hilarious after this. I was hesitant at first, too, due to the beginning, but after you get past that, you'll see how hilarious it is. A lot comes from how lazy the staff is, culture references, and general humor, including plays on words. The action parts are good for a comedy, and makes Gintoki seem gar.

This is BLASPHEMY!!!

I don't know nothing about japanese jokes and yet, I enjoy Gintama a lot!! and whoever said that the sad parts are a joke how dare you! the reason why I love Gintama so much is because it makes me cry of laughter in one moment and in the next second I'm crying my heart out!! I have seen all seasons and the episodes get better!!!

And I think the anime is one of the best not because the croud says so or because it's popular...actually, I think I was one of the first people who watched Gintama when it first came out, so many years ago and the first episode cracked me up when Gin encountered some guys and instead of fighting he ran off XDDDD it was so funny when I watched it

I think you are lucky because all the episodes are out...I remember I always wanted to cry because I had to wait another week for the next episode.

Ack! I hated Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei with all my being!! I just watched like 3 episodes and I couldn't go on...the comedy was mediocre and the characters were not my thing.

This proves that there's no anime considered as "the best", everyone has his/her own opinions and tastes. OP, if you don't enjoy Gintama, drop it. Just because something is popular, it doesn't mean everyone has to like it.

Well since you asked...

What I find funny about Gintama is the fact that they have a big dog as a pet, that's the first funny thing about it. A little girl in Chinese attire who sometimes tell off an older man (Gintoki) and tell him right from wrong; that is comical in itself. A glass wearing character (Shinpachi) who is a parody of characters that play the support role.

I mean, it's no longer funny since I have to explain the jokes to you. This is the type of anime that you either have its sense of humour or you don't. If you don't have its sense of humour, you're not going to like it, it's going to suck. It doesn't mean this show is the best in the world, it's just you can't appreciate it.

I can't appreciate a lot of things, like I can't ever watch Big Brother or Desperate Housewives, I don't know how people watch those shows because I just can't relate to it.

It's not that big of a mystery.

The most obvious answer is that everyone has different tastes especially when it comes to humor so if you watch Gintama and not like it, okay whatever, and if you do great! Nbd.

The reasons that makes Gintama great (in my opinion) is that it is so unique. I have seen alot of anime but none that even comes close to Gintama in how they handle their content. The fact that there's no rules, no fourth wall, how they break every conventional rule of storytelling is amazing because to do that AND pull it off while being hilarious isn't an easy feat. For example they have these random scenes where the GIntoki wakes up and finds himself invisible and we see everything in 1st person mode or when the gang finds themselves turned into sketches because an animator didnt finish (like who thinks of that?!). Because of how the show was set up, they can have a WIDE range of stories to tell. Since it's a show that really doesn't give a shit, they are allowed to push every boundary possible while still keeping the laughs. Sure some episodes are hit and miss since they are heavily based on Japanese references but I would say that's quite minimal. They have TONS of American references throughout now that I really think about it.

Then character-wise, everyone is a breath of fresh air, they are all so different and even if you expect a character to act a certain way they turn it 360 and surprise you. A main plus in my book are the female characters - all strong, badass, self-reliant heroines, and no of the damsel in distress BS.

Third reason, the show has a lot of heart. To the person who said the sad moments were a joke....(grrrr shakes fist). NO! I love the serious arcs, I've never seen a show transition so seamlessly from comedy one second to serious the next. All of them has an inspirational message at the end that you can really take to heart - may seem cheesy to some - but I truly think they're just right.

Last words, I recommend watching a few episodes in the later seasons (maybe the hot spring arc) just to see if you reall like it. To put it simply Gintama is like reaching into a grab bag, you never know what you're gonna get. So if you're looking for a balls to the wall action show, this aint it, or if you're looking for some traditional safe comedies, this also aint it.

I like to call it

"Japanese Comedy, for Teenaged Japanese Girls"

I simply know far more girls into it than guys.

The art style throws me off, the characters have a design I don't like, and it's comedy isn't GTO funny, it's closer to Monty Python funny.

Monty Python is amazing, but some people just don't get it. I like Monty Python a lot.

Gintama is the Monty Python of Anime (that's the analogy i'm going for, I don't actually compare the two very well I believe)

If you're not a fan of it, I suggest Great Teacher Onizuka. GTO's just hilarious and manly, with a lot of heart. The show's just as funny in Manga, Anime, TV Drama, and Movie form!

Oddly enough, I've seen a lot of GTO.
