Anime is a lot more popular than it was and since the second much larger anime boom created from the popularity of Pokemon it's broken into the mainstream. It had a small brush with the mainstream back when movies like Akira and Ghost In The Shell got some press and cinema showings in the early to mid 90's but anime has never been more popular or mainstream than it is now.

Things like Pokemon and Dragonball have become this sort of cool retro thing for hipsters too so it's only added to the popularity. The fact sites like this exist is testament to the mainstream popularity anime now enjoys in the west. You can find anime anywhere now online or in big stores. When i first discovered anime the only way to get it was either be lucky enough to find something in a random video store or order from catalogues of specialist sellers.

Well... Most people are aware of anime but lets just say its not mainstream. I mean Toonami is averaging over a million viewers, CR is big and anyone who has made fun if you for watching DBZ probably did as a kid anyway... So there is a following. It's just most of them won't consider themselves otaku.

I once knew this rather hot girl in my class. She asked me one day, in High School.

"Do you still watch Dragonball Z?"

To which, I answered "why the hell would I still watch Dragonball Z?"
Since you know, I finished and owned all the DVD's, I'm in the middle of watching new shows at that moment

She responded with "oh good, that show was so stupid"

Then, insulted, I stopped talking to her.

Nowadays, I feign insult, then respond with sarcasm and my own insult. I feel it works better, but at the same time it's not nice.

Good for you. How dare she not like exactly the same things you do.

ALL my friends think anime is stupid and for kids only. ALL my friends think that collecting dolls at my age is stupid and immature. ALL my friends dislike the music I like, the tv shows I like and even the way I dress.

ALL of them, every single one. And you know what? I - do - NOT- give- a - sh***!

Likewise, I don't like the things they like but we learn to accept it and move on. We are friends because we focus on the things we enjoy together and that's fine. My sister didn't want me to watch anime when I was a kid and I remember that she turned off the tv when I was watching Card Captors Sakura because she thought it was satanic and useless. I was 12 at the time and I just waited for her to go home and I would just watch anime again. I will enjoy what i enjoy and if people have a problem with that...well, they're the ones with the problem, not me.

So, is anime popular?

-I don't care. I will watch it until I die just because I like it...in real life, I would say it's not popular....online,,,it is popular...but the shows I like are not popular, but I really don't see what's the big deal with popularity.

1. is anime really hated by most people? If so, how can I accept that reality without beating myself up for liking it?

Are you the kind of person who does something they don't like just to be liked by the popular kids in the block? I can't help but imagine this shy girl who is socially awkward and she wants to be with the popular girls in the cheerleader team so she fakes up her personality and changes her look just to become like the popular kids...and in the end, she realizes that she was happier the way she was before. So, you choose...go with the flow or learn to accept who you are and what you like. It's your choice.

2. In the future, how can I bursh off people who just happen to diss anime and/or judge me for liking it?

Tell them that you think they're being immature by judging your hobbies and you don't like it. If they are really your friends they will consider your feelings and never bother you about it, like my friends do with me. If they still judge you, just forget about them, they're not worth it or learn to ignore. There will always be someone who thinks what you're doing is the height of idiocy, so it's best to learn to cope with the fact that there are people whose opinions differ from yours and move on.

The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you.
You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.

Exactly!

That did sound far more mean than I intended. But my basic thought at the time was "she's interested in my hobbies" only to realize that it was more "she's interested in insulting something, and wanted to confirm if it was my hobby was what she wanted insulted or not"

I don't get along too well with people who insult things. I have tons of fun talking about things with people, but talking about what sucks? The world has enough suck without me talking about it.

and yes! How dare she not like exactly the same things I do, and then insult it! You can dislike it all you like but insulting it? That's rather rude! That's what causes these kinds of questions. Knowing you like Anime but not pushing it on others, then hearing someone start insulting anime, makes people feel insecure about their hobbies.

Eh. Am I really suppose to care about what other people think of my hobbies? Hey, I'm not breaking any laws and I'm not hurting anyone. If you got an issue with my hobbies, then go write it in your journal. Or tell me about it whilst I zone you out completely and continue doing other things. If someone is going to insult the things I like for some stupid reason, I'll just ignore them. My brain is awesome like that.

Anime is becoming more accepted as a medium. If people hate you for it, or hate it, what does it matter? That's them. You are you. Our differences are what cause greater change in the world. Embrace it.

Short answer: You can't.

In the long answer we're dabbling in psychology; identity and defense mechanisms, that I don't want to get into because of its complexity. You have a certain awareness of social hierarchy, and you're trying to conform to it, though. It's a mindset that you will eventually grow out of, but not until many years from now.

Is anime popular to the general public? No. Is it popular amongst those who watch it? Yes.

Out of the billions of people on this planet, at least a few million enjoy anime, and if that is not popular, I don't know what is.

Man I feel the same way, I know it's caring too much about what others think. In fact I tried to get some of my friends to watch, but they won't even give it a chance.. although my brothers saw me watching FMA and OnePiece and they immediately loved it, and watched the so much they got further into the episodes than I was. I think the truth is, we are a different person, and there is no use hating yourself over other people hating you for it. With my brothers, even though they will say "anime is stupid" they still easily fell in love with certain shows. I know it can be hard to just tune out others' opinion, especially if you love to share your hobbies, but rest easy knowing that many other people are there with you.

dang this rant was a little therapeutic for me, nice post GeassForce ;D

a better question is: does it matter? like what you like, don't like what you don't like. if people give you crap, it's their problem, not yours. don't think so much.
