It depends on where you are to say whether it's popular or not. In Japan it's very popular, it's very popular in conventions around the world. Sure many people love anime that don't do conventions or live in Japan, but we are the minority. I generally don't care what others see in what I do or watch, but I'll jump in if you like what I like, but most times I'm just doing my own thing. I believe the popular thing to do is do what everyone else is doing, watching or drinking. Anime is one of my few loves and anyone talking down to me about my maturity will get an earful about the things they find "interesting".

I'm asking sometimes to my friends if they know what an anime is? They answer "no" but when I ask do you know about dragon ball or pokemon or even naruto they are like"Yeah dude! That was good."

Do know and remember.

Anime has a far more negative stigma over in Japan than it does in the states. At least in the states you can say things like "it's another countries culture, jackass"

Over in japan they just facepalm at what the nerds made for the rest of the world to look weirdly at.

That said, I got a neat Manga for some people to take a look at, it's a short 3 volume one that I got at the Bookstore a while back, and is fairly weird.

The 3 volume series deals with a short Black kid from the hood having to hide his Anime fandom from the world at large, and "very luckily" gets to take a trip to japan with a "manga hating" co-worker. One goes to Japan to finally live the Otaku life style and be accepted for once in his life, and the other really wants to bang an Asian, cuz they be fine.

And ANOTHER SET OF DUDES, a Japanese kid in a Japanese Mafia, reallllllly likes American culture, having learned everything from an early 90's Blaxploitation film that's considered a hilarious Parody of black culture in america. It's like if someone from Japan started acting like Riley from The Boondocks cuz "that's how americans act"

Needless to say, major Culture Dissonance here. And a great look at acceptance as a whole. I suggest checking it out.
