I'm looking forward to it. Based on the previews, what I know about the books, and KyoAni's excellent animation, I think we might get something very interesting.

^Dat animation, dat glorious animation... i honestly could see this being the type of anime that really isn't that good but since it's from KyoAni with the godlike realistic looking characters, it will generate enough hype to sustain it.

Well, everybody has different tastes. To be honest, I try and ignore the hype for any show. Often the shows I really like are not the ones that everyone is talking about before the season premiers. But, since I can't watch everything, I have to pick and choose. So, I will give preference to studios that have produced shows I've liked.

I know a little more about this property than most of the other shows debuting next season, so I'm a little hopeful this will be good. But, other than that, I'm ignoring the hype.

It's far better to start watching a show with low expectations and be pleasantly surprised than to be really pumped for a show and have it fail to live up to your unreasonable expectations.

LMAO at the conversations while i was busy watching Index...YES it was a look of disgust to how KyoAni's characters look, not saying KyoAni had anything to do with Soul Eater (thank god). Again, love the backgrounds just the characters freak me out. Clannad, Haruhi, Tamako Market, Free!...doesn't matter old or new the characters faces just don't sit well with me. I'm more of a Bones, P.A. Works, J.C Staff, Gonzo (occasionally) type of guy i suppose. I will definitely still check this out however, although i don't how the characters look and from the trailers it looks like it's trying too hard to be "cool" with a heroine wearing hipster glasses. Can't hurt to try, right?

That's funny, since my son and I both thought that the character designs looked more like recent PA Works shows than KyoAni, other than Hyoka.

Well...pausing Index...i just have to put this out there. And before i start i never said i think it has bad animation just that the characters look weird, everything else is just dandy. i don't hate moe i actually like it since it's cute. im not trying to knock what's popular doesn't matter who uses this style. i used K-on! before only as an example of how many KyoAni shows look, not saying they made those girls out to look like that since they looked the same in the manga.

Now look at this image...looks clean, crisp, vivid, bright, detailed right? They do that very well. Now what i don't like is huge the eyes are, the almost non-existent nose, and how basic the expressions are. It just comes of as non-realistic animation and to put it blunt just childish (yea, it's moe i know....but so is Love Lab and they don't look so simple-faced)

Since im on the topic of Index, why not use it? The characters are look defined, well shaded, mature animation and just plain realistic.

I think what i don't like must be that KyoAni is too bright, too colorful, too detailed. If that is what you guys are looking for, more power to you but for me, i don't like it. Again, my opinion, no requirement to follow!

OK. Just so you know, I'm a professional photographer. One of the things I always notice is lighting. (and backgrounds) (and lighting of backgrounds) LOL

Your examples here are not a very fair comparison. One is a promotional piece that is more akin to a poster than a shot of the actual animation, while the other is a screenshot.

As for your criticisms: On the Index picture

Huge eyes: check
Non-existent nose: On Mikoto, check
basic expressions: more like expressionless...

Now for the lighting, colors, etc...
The colors are very muted in the Index picture. Indeed, it seems as if there is a film or fog over the whole thing. This may be a bad screencap, but none-the-less, it is very muted in tone and kind of uninteresting.

The big question though is: Where the heck is the light source that is hitting them? Look at the hair shadows on the two characters. Some of the shadows fall to the right of the hair, some to the left. The shadows of their heads and collars seem like the light is coming from the right, as you look at the picture, but the majority of the shadows from the hair seem to have the light source coming from the left. In short, it is sloppy at best.

Here are some examples of screen shots from a recent KyoAni show, Hyouka:

They still have non-existent noses, except when seen from the side and the eyes are generally huge. Those, of course, are standards of the style of drawing, not something that is specific to a particular studio.

Note the consistency of the shadows in each frame. The light source is consistent. The shadows always fall in the direction you would expect them to given the lighting. The colors are bright and crisp despite not being overly colorful. There is no sense of muted colors. The one that is obviously sunset lighting (the third one) carries the golden hue of "the magic hour" to the skin tone as well as the surroundings, which is how it works with real photography. (I took a picture of my daughter during the hour before sunset when she was eight and she looked like she was wearing make-up due to the effect of the slanted rays. It was scary to look at, as a father. My little girl looked too damned old! LOL!)

Anyway... Just an example of the kind of realistic looking character animation that KyoAni is producing recently with a series that has a more serious tone instead of one that is intentionally light and fluffy. (That also has an impact on the designs...)

I actually love their eye style. It makes their eyes look so striking. You can almost remember the characters for their eye colors. Especially in Free.

You can just get lost in Haru's eyes, or any of them really.

I also love the profile of KyoAni characters. It's less "flat" than other typical anime series.

They always have the bottom half of the face come out a lot more, and give careful detail to the lining of the nose, mouth and chin. I don't know, not only is it super cute and lends itself incredibly well to moe shows, but it's just such an attractive anime style that is "different" from what we're used to.

Another thing you need to watch for in Kyo Ani shows is their animation of the actual characters. They give so much attention to detail of body movements, way more so than other anime. Especially hands and feet, things that most shows turn in to a blur of straight lines and melding. Even arm muscle. The arms just aren't straight lines, they actually give girth to the parts where muscles (don't think I should mention Free here) or things that make your arm more "poofy" in certain areas, it's noticeable in the gif above around her forearms.

Yep, KyoAni and their "Moe Eyes"... Let's see... Here are eyes from eight characters from eight different anime that were new this summer. Can you tell which are "Crappy" KyoAni eyes and which are high quality eyes from other studios?

For anyone who is interested, the "Anime eyes" are not big just because it is cute. Sure, sometimes that is the case, but the size of the eyes is actually symbolic. Large eyes are a sign of openness, honesty, genuineness, naivete, etc... While narrower eyes are symbolic of cunning, guile, shiftiness, and worldliness. Basically, bad guys and good guys that rely on their wits are more likely to have narrow eyes, while the more innocent characters will have the prototypical anime eyes. (For a fine example, look at the pictures I posted from Hyouka a couple of messages up. Houtarou has more narrow eyes. He relies on his wits and is not always the most honest person, despite being the hero of the story. Chitanda, on the other hand, is guileless, innocent, and oh so curious!)

It has absolutely nothing to do with the studio that makes that anime.

(response to previous post) C'mon Zensunni...im not trying to say the studio does bad work. The pictures of Hyouka you posted had marvelous backgrounds. No one can take that away (well i won't) but the picture of the characters faces just scare me. It's so bad that as soon as you posted the comparison picture, i knew it was the third picture on the bottom. Just because it's clear, detailed and colorful doesn't mean it will appeal to everyone. Your a photographer? That's really cool, i respect that. So, your knowledge of shading and lighting would probably far surpass mine. Well, im in college right now so i can get my b.a. in media to become involved in the production business be it animation, writing, or sound work. So the more i learn the better. I agree with everything you say for the most part, it's just those eyes, those damn eyes don't look good to me no matter how detailed they are.

Oh and if the recent P.A. Works anime your referring to Tari Tari then lol nope Sawa's eyes look so much more relaxed and doesn't stick out like KyoAni eyes do.

Well...could be this...

TBH the eyes in the picture you posted to me just strike me as boring.

The fact Kyoani eyes stick out is what their strength is. They are just so damn pretty.

I feel like this thread has gotten a bit off topic. Not really talking about the show anymore. Maybe you guys would be better served taking this all here? http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-813647/anime-eyes

Not really, because it's specifically related to Kyoto Animation's style of eyes, and sure enough they are employing the same fundamental style to this upcoming show. It's not off-topic at all.

Eyes?! What constitutes good eyes are lighting/shading, saturation, pattern and minute details(these 2 merely dependent among tastes).

Sawa's eyes are absolutely fantastic! I did a fairly long and drawn out post somewhere (I think on the MAL Tari Tari fan page) that detailed how they even used the size of her pupils to show that she was attracted to Taichi, along with body language and other prototypical signs of attraction. But I digress...

BTW, I would generally argue that PA Works is superior in almost all ways to KyoAni and all the other studios, with the possible exception of their ability to adapt source material. Fortunately, their best work is anime original. KyoAno appears to go the other way, they are better at adaptation than writing their own stories. With this project, it is an adaptation, but it is an adaptation of a light novel that won a contest and was published by Kyoto Animation. I guess that is still an adaptation... LOL. It's like the contest was picking their next animation project as opposed to a winning story. I guess it probably means that it is a story that will translate to anime well. Not all light novels will...

(see how I brought the post back on topic. LOL)

Yea her eyes really look well for her face shape and it just suits her. I don't know about her being attracted to Taichi beyond normal friendship
but let's not get into that since it way of topic lol.

Anyway, so yea i know that this is a light novel that won a contest, but that would be cool if it really was the winner of the contest gets an adaptation. Tried to swing it back too lol
