If it's a persons first anime you want to get them to watch something that ramps up super quick to keep their attention. I've actually experienced trying to introduce unknowing people to the anime genre and it's not quite as easy as just picking your favorite anime you think everybody should love and then showing it to them.

Don't pick an anime with a slow start. It doesn't matter how good it gets, a first time viewer is not going to sit through episodes upon episodes before they even know if anything good is going to come from it. You want something that unleashes the wam bam from the opening.

Anime that tends to be a little more mature, in my experience, tends to grab new audiences because it presents less of that "cartoony" feeling to folks who are in-experienced with anime and may see anime as simply...well...a cartoon. Something like PSYCHO-PASS in my opinion is a great anime for new viewers. It has a strong opening episode and it has a lot of themes you may even see in most Hollywood movies these days. It takes the "kiddy" out of their probably ignorant impression of anime within the first few minutes and let's them re-design their view of what they're watching.

You want to pick something that was given a bit of love in the animation/music department because you want to set a good example for the genre. Aesthetics is not everything, we all know this, but for a first time viewer everything counts, almost anything can unhinge their desire to sit through something. That means what you show them might not always even be a great anime, but if you want to hook them you have to settle a little bit sometimes. I consider Mushi-Shi to be quite a brilliant piece of work but I would never show it to someone if I was trying to pique their interest in anime. I think Bakemonogatari is a masterpiece anime, but for similar reasons, would never use it as a starting point. You kind of have to build up to a certain level for some anime.

Attack on Titan & Guilty Crown have rock star opening episodes, hands down some of the best soundtracks, and some of the best animation styles put to the works. Both deal with crazy, out of this world scenarios that just let the viewers imagination run wild.

Last thing I recommend...is go with action. Action is by far the most "popular" genre for anime viewers, and it's the easiest hook. Once you have them by the balls, they will probably go out of their own way to explore all the other kinds of anime that they are missing out on, and then they might branch in to comedy, romantics, slice of life, maybe even moe, but in my opinion none of these genres are good for introducing an normal average american to anime.

I think Sound of the Sky (a.k.a Soranowoto).

I think many people either
1). Haven't heard of it
2). Heard of it and haven't cared to watch it
3). Only watched a part of it and made hasty generalizations as to its worth.

Give it a shot. Even if you hate it, i'll be happy just to know that one more person has at least seen it. That's good enough for me.

So that's the series that I most fervently recommend. But I recommend you finish it before making judgments on it. If you finish it and then say you hate it, then i'll accept that (but still be happy you watched it).

It's also free here on Crunchyroll (for now).

Have to strongly "like" this.

Soranowoto was the first anime that I watched on CR after finally subbing, actually. Don't regret it one bit. Amazing anime with themes from so many genres. K-ON!! with feels.

I can't exactly disagree with this MASSIVE list in the Slightest.

It covers all it's bases, holds a wide number of anime I would recommend to people, and provides both the hard core, western, light, dramatic, and dark sides of Anime.

From Gundam, to Gundam 08, to Gundam Seed, to...hehe...lots of Gundam, Code Geass, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

it even holds the big guns like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, and Full Metal Alchemist.

As well as the Obscure Gems like Galaxy Express 999, Chromartie High School, Paprika.

AND TO TOP IT OFF, A slight run of Generic-yet-unfitting Genre Mash-compilations. Like Fate/Stay, Haijema no Ippo, and The Slayers.

Seriously, this whole list covers all your bases man. IT EVEN HAS GTO AND GENKISHEN! GOLDEN BOY AND SCHOOL DAYS!

FRAKIN, Oran Host Club is here on the same list as Big O, while over to the side you see Ghost in the Shell with School Rumble.

You got Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis, FLCL...that's your default LIST for Gainax works! The inclusion on Eureka 7, Code Geass, and FREAKING VOLTOMS completes the Mecha list more than well enough.
Black Lagoon, Full Metal Panic, Outlaw Star, Fist of the North Star?

ALL IT'S MISSING IS DRAGONBALL!(Not DBZ, no point in starting at DBZ, Dragonball sure, but DBZ? No.)
I feel like it needs one default shounen long runnen. Recommendations tend to be, you know, recommendations. Long Runners are known to invite more fans better than all other forms of Anime.

It didn't forget MONSTER, that's some props again! I don't even have to MENTION SPIRITED AWAY!
Clannad, the Girl who Lept through time, NHK, Card Captor Sakura, Macross, Excell Saga, Serial Experiments Lain, Initial D...

IT'S COVERED EVERYTHIIING!
