So I can think of four recent shows that have centrally featured scissors:

The Severing Crime Edge

Dog & Scissors

Gatchaman Crowds

Mysterious Girlfriend X

Is there a reason behind all this scissor stuff?

Nothing wrong with it per say, I'm just curious.

It's like asking why there is always that one girl in the show with heterochromia, that one girl with the older brother complex, and/or a loli.

Simple answer. Pop culture is 5% original, 95% imitation. When the 5% has a hit,(not always, but original is risky) the 95% think it's because of a gimmick. Urabe's scissors work in Mysterious Girlfriend X generated a lot of comment ( Yes Senjyogahara's office supply preference predates but not that much buzz was made about that factor of Monogatari) Manga publishers say "It must be the scissors!" and Manga editors stated chanting "Need more cowbell" Opps. "Need more scissors!" and the mangaka who prefer to eat rather than be original supply them with them. Same thing with any other trope you can name.

And scissors (or thus far merely scissor) rise again in Kill la Kill.

KILL LA KILL!

Seriously, only one call on that one? Oh, this was the work of a Ni-crow-mancer!

Did I really not take a good picture of the Scissors sword? How foolish of me!

This is best I got.

I think for most cases is because it plays along with the school theme. Three of the Five anime listed so far I've seen have been in a school setting (somewhat) or are characters who go to school. It's like the most sensible variation to allowing a character to walk around with a weapon aside from the Kendo club trope. But it seems to be different reasoning each time.

In Gatchaman:

Not central but:

Kuroko's Basketball, episode 38

Why would there be scissors at hand? No good reason at all (one player's lucky object of the day)
