Let me just preface by saying that this Light novel series and its Manga Adaptation are currently very big in Japan and without a doubt once an anime is green-lit it will be the next SAO or AoT in terms of hype. So yea you heard it here first.

Synopsis
Magic is a product of neither legends nor fairy tales, but instead has become a technology of reality since a time unknown to people. Supernatural power became a technology systematized through magic, while magic became a technical skill. A "Supernatural Power User" became a "Magic Technician." Magic Technicians (in short, Magicians) are nurtured through Magic High Schools and Universities.

Plot:
The story starts off with a touching introduction that automatically makes the reader empathize with Tatsuya: a hardworking, intelligent, but naturally untalented highschool boy. He is put into the "reserve" program, AKA "The Weeds", because he is not talented enough to be part of the main student body, AKA "The Blooms". On the other hand, his beloved sister, Miyuki, is put as the highest ranking student of all the freshmen. People automatically judge both Tatsuya and his sister, enraging Mikyuki and creating a big conflict between the "weeds" and "blooms". Fortunately, this conflict is solved without much issue, but the resentment continues to grow. Little do people know though that Tatsuya is in fact the talented one with a very special and unique gift, that he is forced to hide. This power is revealed little by little as the story progresses, which creates a sense of suspense for the readers, because in a sense he has both the analytical skills and tactical mindset such as Lelouch from Code Geass but he is also very powerful in terms of raw strength. This often gives the readers a sense of uncertainty, making the readers so much more eudaimon as the story unfolds.
Last but not least the character interaction in the Manga/Novel is worth noting.

Art:
The Art is just very good. you can see that they put a lot of effort into making detailed backgrounds and very well drawn characters but still keeping it clean, meaning that during fights and actions you do not lose sight of what is happening.

Characters:
The characters are good although a few supporting characters do appear and disappear without any clear information. But still, the development of the main characters are well thought out.

Enjoyment:
I have to say that I eagerly await every new update. I'm impressed by the storyline and i constantly want to read more, and if you are patient, since this is a monthly serialization you might find yourself getting addicted to the series. Currently there are around 20 chapters out for the manga, if you really can't wait every month, don't worry there is the original Light Novel adaptation which is up to around Volume 11 now, and it often explains many things in greater depth.

I honestly could not stress my point more that this manga/light novel is very good, and i highly recommend you to check it out . it is simply well written and the story just draws you in, making you craving for more. it really sucks that the manga is only monthly. the light novels however are up to volume 11, i think..

I've read all the light novels that have been translated and I must say this is definitely better light novel than manga due to the crazy amount of details needed to describe the magic.

Yesh Volume 5 did not seem that important to me especially when you think that there is now Volume 11 coming out.

Yeah volume 5 is side stories. Its like events that happened but none of them are ground breaking and they don't effect the main story arcs. The next arc starts on volume 6 so if you just read the side stories aval for 5 then move on you will be fine. I have read up to volume 9 just waiting on 10 and 11 to get finished with translation. Its one of my favorite light novel series. I really hope if they do make an anime they don't rush it.

Yea, i think with the growing trend in popularity, it is not unlikely for Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei to have an anime this coming year. and when it does, i am actually expecting there to be a huge boom in popularity like there was with both SAO and AOT. these are of course only my own predictions.

Hopefully something like a summer or fall 2014 would be a nice time for the anime.

Looks like your prediction was dead on:

Well, at least the half about it getting an anime adaption this year at least. The other half remains to be seen, for now anyways.

The whole time I was reading this, I kept thinking to myself, "Yuichi Nakamura would rock Tatsuya's voice." And now it's actually happening and I'm happy beyond belief.

I knew this would get an anime adaptation someday given the popularity in Japan but good to see it being confirmed now!
