Dont get me wrong , im up for any music, but things like J-pop , when its all techno and the singer sounds like a opera artist .. i sometimes think maybe its because they don't/ can't sing with an american accent like more western countries. but i just think it sounds weird anyway. (i still listen to it)

Is it just me or do Japanese singers sound weird?

All of them? No
Many of them? No
Some of them? No
Few of them? Maybe
None of them? No

It depends which ones

Is it just me or does it depend on every singer whether he/she is Japanese or not?

Could you give an example?

I'm not inclined to think that they all sound weird, but some do sound distinct compared to others. For exapmle, when I first heard the vocalist of Nano.RIPE, I thought she sounded "weird", but now I think she's just distinct.

If you're talking about in comparison to western singers, then I wouldn't say they sound weird, just a different style of singing. Just from the songs i've heard, they tend to have higher pitched voices and more melodic phrases, whereas western singers seem to be "deeper", "breathier" and focused more on the beat. That's just my personal observation though.

Or are you talking about Japanese singers who sing western songs? In that case, it probably is just the accent.

it's probably that, you aren't too familiar with how the Japanese pronounce words. I don't think they sound weird at all, if anything, it's the language barrier, but I'm well on my way to get across that barrier

Regardless of what Ayn Rand said, music is entirely subjective.

Examples: I hate Folk music. It's written by and for people with the IQ of a small soap dish. The singing is generally horrible, the instrumentation is juvenile, and the lyrics are banal. It's a pox upon humanity.

Dubstep is equally horrible. It's created by talentless hacks who incestuously copy and paste the same simple computer algos over and over and over, and then dub over the cheapest sounding vocals with lyrics written by a short bus sixth grader.

Now, those that enjoy Folk and Dubstep would probably totally object to my dislike and portrayal of their music. They would be wrong, of course, but that's the beauty of music. It's subjective.

I like J-Pop and generally enjoy Japanese singing. I don't think it's weird at all. I've brought this example up before, but I really love the band "The Cure". The lead singer, Robert Smith, has an odd vocal style that most people hate. I love it.

However, I didn't always like The Cure. I grew into it. It was a maturity thing. And that may happen with you and J-Pop/Japanese singing. You may find that years from now, if you aren't dead, that you love the sound of Japanese singing. Heck, you may even like Folk by then, but let's hope not.

Take a batch of MP3s that you hate now, put them on a USB stick, and hide it for 10-years. Then 10-years from now, pop in that USB stick and listen to those songs.

A $100 bucks says you will like what you hear.

When they sing in English, and they have an accent, it sounds awkward. When they sing in their native language it can be delightful to listen to, depending on the genre.
