The reason of why many of us haven´t seen “Attack on Titan” and many other great anime is because, hold on, let me use the exact phrase “Sorry, due to licensing limitations, videos are unavailable in your region”. According to the United Nations there are 196 countries in the world besides the U.S. but somehow the licensing lawyers always forget about this fact. Well life is a B…

Gintama is a masterpiece of the ridiculous.

Thats for Zipzo's "if your complaint is it aint a masterpiece then whats a masterpiece" comment.

People are trying a bit too hard to hate this series. Most of the people here (or anywhere really) say that it's mediocre and it's horrible and it's this and that, but usually can't support those same opinions with anything substantial.

I dont know how old anyone around here is. I am certainly on the older side for Anime.

The world, my young friends, is full of people who try to look intelligent and important by tearing others works down. 99.9% of those people dont actually DO anything, they just like complaining about the .1% who actually did create something.

Those who can, do, those who cant...babble.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but being hard lined about your/my/his opinion being "Right" is just silly. Its subjective. Of course your opinion on Anime as right....for you. I actually don't have the right to tell you differently. And you do not have the right to tell me my opinions or tastes are right or wrong, the idea that one of us is objectively "right" about the others viewing tastes is ridiculous.

Here, heres how I make up my mind on Anime personally:

1 Star: The Anime has something distinctively wrong with it that causes me to ignore the rest of the show and focus on whatever that one thing is, making the show nearly unwatchable.

2 Stars: The show is simply something I shouldnt have tried to watch in the first place, Unicorns having a Tea Party. Little girls talking about their feelings for half an hr, Emo Robots, etc.

3 Stars: The show is entertaining to me and stays on my que, but I dont rush to see it. Im drawn in but not hooked.

4 Stars: I generally want to see the show when it comes out. Its got good graphics, good plot, good characters etc.

5 Stars: I love this show and want to have its babies. If it does not come out next week I will forcibly take over crunchyroll and hold some poor cosplayer hostage until it does.

Thats how I see things.

If a show is enjoyable its enjoyable. I dont see why people have to get into this whole "I have seen something like that before". Hell if I did that I would have to compare every damn robot show to Voltron or even earlier than Voltron, I would have to compare half the worlds media to Shakespeare. Its boring. Yeah everything is built off of something that came before it, get over it. Did you enjoy it? Want to see another episode? Yes? Awesome! No? Im sure there's 2 Pandas having a fistfight or something in a different Anime thats right up your ally, its fricken cartoons, theres something for everyone provided you have a healthy respect for suspension of disbelief.

You and I, jgilman, we're fighting an unwinnable battle, it seems. Ah well, might as well try, hm? It couldn't hurt...that much. Suffice to say, I couldn't agree more. By the by, many people put their ages under their avatar; you should as well! While you can more than likely tell the age of someone by the way they construe their thoughts, more often than not it's still nice to see that there are some older members who still have that light of youth in them. While I'm still young, I myself know that I will forever be an otaku at heart no matter my age. I'll be the old geezer rambling on about the good old days when anime was 'drawn' and not 'cgi' in thirty year's time.

I made an error in making my name on here Jgilman instead of using an old gaming handle or something. Since my user ID has my first initial and last name in it, adding things like location and age are actually an issue since there are websites that spider all that sort of public data and create profiles on people using it. Those are then used by people for identity theft.

So, since I didn't use some random name like Pizzaparty732 I'm gonna abstain from filling that data in. However I am in my 40s. Im watching this stuff with a 2nd generation already :)

Well, Not AOT. Hell my brother had nightmares from the movie Poltergeist when we were kids. The titan eating Mom gave ME the willies Im not about to fill the house with night lights because I was dumb enough to put that into a childs head

Ah, good thinking then. That's awesome! Yeah, I would certainly not show this to anyone that isn't mentally mature enough to understand it and/or get some pleasure from the fantasy-aspect of wrecking shite. So good to know that the otaku way is being passed down, though. I myself don't want and do not plan to have children, though I have friends who have kids and I'm always speaking (broken) Japanese to them and showing them little chibi plushies and the like, so I'm spreading the love in my own way. Awesome to know that there are adults who have an open mind about anime. It's so sad to see minds that are older than mine yet can't seem to grasp that this isn't simply 'for children' and/or is 'useless'.

Although I'm all for the action, my favorite aspect of this show, by leaps and bounds is the way they portray the human resolve; the inner strength to look at something stronger than you and stand up to it despite an almost certain death. It's very powerful; having that kind of willpower and bravery is a rare thing, and it's great to watch a show that so wonderfully portrays such an emotion.

conversely, most people who like AoT can't support their opinion with anything substantial, either. that's why opinions are opinions.

personally, I don't like it because the first 5 episodes are nothing but fast-paced action. barely any story or character development what so ever. then, after eren 'dies', it switches focus to be more of a character-based drama, which is where the show was actually interesting. but, 6 or 7 episodes later, everything changes. the plot starts to drag almost as bad as DBZ while they pretty much abandon any concept of character story or development and start throwing characters at titans just to watch them die. everything is also overly serious, horribly predictable, and 95% of the dialogue is screaming while 95% of the imagery is shaky cams and speed lines. when they actually feel like fully animating scenes, that is.

An opinion is different from an informed opinion. From my own experience, it seems like the majority of people that like AoT can tell you while they like/love it while only a minority can tell you why it's "overhyped".

"The first 5 episodes are nothing but fast-paced action".

Not true at all. The first 5 episodes are great ways of, basically, introducing the characters, plot, setting, etc. In fact, other than episode 1, we don't experience any true action until the end of Episode 4 and the rest of Episode 5. And, even when the later episodes focused on character-based drama as well it was still coupled with the action that you're knocking.

Personally I also feel that (and I may be alone on this) the pacing of the show helps to carry across the mood and tone to the viewers, something that should really be more appreciated than it is currently. I also don't vibe well to the "everything is also overly serious" comment.

The people of the Walls are trapped and terrorized constantly by the Titans. They're huddled up in said Walls like ordinary cattle, with no way to explore the world around them. Everyday they have to look over their backs and wonder for the safety of themselves and their families. Given how dire the situation and setting of the series is, it seems appropriate that "everything is serious", don't you agree?

When the protagonist actually got eaten I think that was an excellent portrayal of what your talking about. And I agree, There is something about people fighting against insane odds (and NOT winning) and just continuing to gut it out that is really engrossing. I think perhaps thats why my ardor has cooled a bit. I think moving from humans trying long after the majority of our race has given up to push boundaries even at extreme cost, to Titan Vs Titan loses that a bit.

Anyhow, As far as "Cartoons are for children" I think thats your basic generational thing. My generation (of which Im on the older side) seems to embrace gaming, cartoons, etc both as being useful for a more mature audience and also as something that can be done with their own kids. But on the flipside we arent using google glass to text someone 3 feet away that we are still going to the bathroom. That seems to be where my generation "doesn't get it".

But hey thats been the case forever. Each generations a little different right?

SHUT UP ALREADY! It's a mediocre show at best with shounen battle manga-type writing and shallow characters (I mean, even the author doesn't care a **** for his characters, except the ones that are absolutely necessary for an easily-written plot).

There are much, MUCH better series running this season, so how about giving them the praise they deserve?

How many Shonen have you actually read where the main character "dies" or is incognito for a large amount of time? Thought so.
