If you can make a movie about the holocaust then I don't know why you couldn't make an anime about it.

Not that I see many production companies just itching to do something about that sort of subject material anyway.

Hmm, As far as the holocaust goes, yeah, stay away from that. (unless you're doing something like MAUS , but that's different.
Also, they've already done some stuff that's not okay, like making Incest look like a sexy thing, or Loli/Shotacon.

But hey, what's past is past. Let's hope they don't do dumb things anymore!

I don't think there should be anything taboo in Anime. I think that's one of the beauties of Anime as a medium, it can really touch on any topic that it wants (without worry of physical restrictions). I'd say it's like the visual equivalent of a book. If there was an anime made about the holocaust (if there hasn't been one already) then I'm sure it will grab someone's attention (a holocaust enthusiast maybe? and that's not necessarily a bad thing). Anime, like any other medium tells a story, and so shouldn't be restricted or have any taboo subjects, especially since it's the consumers choice to pick and choose what they do and do not watch

(and i would also say that this freedom/beauty extends to manga as well since a vast majority of animes come from manga)

I think when it comes to art and storytelling creators can make whatever the hell they want and it's up to the consumers to decide individually what they think is acceptable and worth viewing.

Just because I'm not interested in a certain topic or perhaps find that topic to be too risque or what have you, doesn't mean I don't think it should be covered. I'll just choose not to watch the show in question if that's the case.

This. This reply is perfect. Anime covers a wide variety of "taboo" topics already (murder, sex, loli, incest) which is what I think makes it so appealing

Uhhh... Anne no Nikki (アンネの日記)

Also... Taboos are ridiculous, people who think they have a right not to be offended, are correct. You have that right, it exists in your body's ability to change the channel, or close the window, or stick your head in a bucket...

I don't think you'll ever seen an anime that directly addresses Unit 731 and the Nanking Massacre.

Remember when South Park did an episode about Censorship? I mean the 3rd Censorship episode, not the first 2, OR the Censorship Movie.

I like remembering the very line

"Either it's all ok, or none of it is"

Why is the Holocaust so special? Do the Japanese have such a hate of it as we do? Wern't they on the other side for other (completely different) reasons to do just as horrible(But totally different) things during the same time span? The Asian front of WW2 is both the most forgotten, and most bloody they say.

What about the Studio Ghibli film "Grave of the Fireflies"?
It's a movie about a sibling pair trying, and eventually failing, to survive post WW2 Japan. Are you saying because the subject matter is dark or controversial it shouldn't be made into a movie or show?

Why does Anne Frank have so many movies? IS it because people just love making fun of Anne Frank and her silly "livin in secret" nonsense?
Or is it about something a little more.....something?

What about Incest? We've more than a few anime taking it both seriously, comically, and sexually for it to spawn multiple terms, including "wincest" Is that less heavy a subject than the Holocaust?

What about the 80's? Mobile Suit Gundam, Fist of the North Star, Akira. We have PLENTY of shows that tackle the subject of War and it's darkness, or the end of man kind, or just epic shit. We have more movies and books on it in every culture than Anime alone, why is this ok, but the Holocaust not?

What about Full Metal Alchemist? The Ishbalans carry a large "jewish" tone and "genocide" arc around all the time. You could say the Holocaust was already covered in a way. Genocide isn't exactly a singular event, we didn't make the word up after WW2, it existed before then.

And to finish it off, what about Refuge in Audacity?>
Shows like Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, to name one of many. That show is about three things. Sex, Jokes, and kicking Ass. It's well written, has a sense of humor about it, and takes nothing seriously. The opening episode involves people being eaten by toilets, because thats when you're most vulnerable. It includes and episode that makes fun of crappy Harem shows, AND SAVING PRIVATE RYAN REENACTED BY SEA-MEN!

HOW HAVE WE NOT GONE TO FAR ALREADY?

You can be sure China won't stop making Movies, Songs, Novels, and TV Shows about it. Just because it won't be an Anime doesn't mean it won't be in it's own Medium or form.

Of course, more than a few studio's love taking sacred things and messing with them several times over. Ghibli has a few, and Gainax has a few shows about messing with serious stuff.
