Post Reply Statler's Diner
Posted 9/22/13 , edited 9/24/13
Statler's Diner is about 10 miles up the road if you ever wanna have a bite to eat. My Daddy worked there for a bit when he got out of the "madhouse" and worked with some nice people. They know me pretty well there.

What the inside of the diner looks like:

Maureen and Horace walked into the diner and sat down in an empty booth. "Hang on a sec, k?" she said to Horace. She went over to the serving window and said, "Hey, Stat! How've you been? Kinda slow tonight, huh?" Statler came over to the window and said, "Hey Maureen! Long time, no see. Been hanging in there. Really wish your dad was still around to help me out at times but, hey. That's how life goes. And yea, it's kinda slow. How's the Motel been doing?" "Been doing ok. Got some guests staying there now, so it's gotten a little busy. But just wanted to see how you've been. We're gonna be ordering some food," motioning towards the booth that Horace was sitting at. "I'll talk to ya later, Stat," and Maureen went to go sit back down with Horace. "Sorry, been sometime since I talked with Statler. He owns this place and my dad worked here a little, so I got to know them quite well here."

"It's quite alright, sounds like you guys are good friends." Horace smiled and continued. "It's nice for us to have a chance to talk too." "Just been so busy reopening the motel, huh?"

Maureen smiled and readjusted herself in the booth. "Yea. We're good friends. I used to come over here with Daddy when we decided to forego the sandwiches and milk for a day or two. He always knew what food was good here." She folded her arms on the table and looked down again. "I miss him too much, sometimes..." she sighed and said, "Yea, been busy trying to get things set up for the reopening and everything. I'm actually glad that you were looking for a job. I wasn't sure if I was ever going to find anyone to be my Assistant Manager." Maureen smiled a small, weak smile. "So, tell me a little bit about yourself."

Horace leaned forward and rested his arms on the table. "Well, before I found your motel I was still stuck living at home with the family. Just couldn't find much work, you know?"

He went on..."So, even though I'm kinda quiet and maybe seem bored sometimes, I am very happy to have this job." "I think part of the reason I wanted this job was because I thought maybe something where I'd be around people would help me be a little less quiet all the time. Even at home I was like that, quiet and felt like I didn't fit in" He smiled "I kinda feel like I'll fit in here though."

"What about you?" hes asked. "Did you always have a feeling you'd be the manager like this someday?"

Maureen smiled and chuckled. "Yea, I guess you could say that. When I was around 5 or 6, I started helping my Daddy around the Motel with small things like collecting the garbage, helping change the linens, cleaning the bathrooms.. that sort of stuff. Then when I was 12, he got really sick and I had to take care of the Motel myself. We were only getting a handful of people back then, see. And then when my Mom left us, it was just Daddy and I to run it. Soon after, when I turned 21, he got sick again but this time the sickness took him within a week of him getting it." A tear started to come to Maureen's eye. "I fell apart on the inside. I didn't think at that point there was any reason for me to be living. But I knew that Daddy would've wanted me to keep the Motel running since I was their only child and there was no other family members living." She brushed away the couple tears that came into view. "I'm sorry," she said. "I tend to get emotional when it comes to talking about Daddy. He called me "his second chance at life" at times. I didn't know why he did, but when I was about 11 my Mommy told me what had happened to him and it made me happy to know that he called me that."

At that point, Statler came over and asked, "You guys ready to order?"

Horace glanced back down at the menu once more. "Umm, yea, I think so." He replied, placing the menu back on the table. "Can I have the cheeseburger, with lettuce & tomato and fries and...a root beer, please." Horace motioned towards Maureen "and..."

"Oh, that sounds good. Make it two," Maureen said. "And put it on my tab. I'll pay for it later, Stat." He held up a hand, smiled and said, "It's on the house, Maureen." "Thanks," she said and smiled back. When Statler left to make the food, Maureen folded her hands and placed them under her chin, resting her elbows on the table. "So, you said that you feel like you fit in at the Motel. Can I ask how?"

"Hmm, it's hard to explain I guess...I sorta got a feeling that your motel was.. different, like me. Your motel's not just another Super 8 or whatever, like every other motel out there." "So it kinda stands out, but at the same time also feels humble a little quiet, kinda how I feel about myself..." "Like.... I definitely couldn't see my self in some huge, busy, fancy place in the city." "This feels just right." Horace went on, "We also seem to get along so far, which I think helps." "I'm sorry, was I rambling a bit? does any of that make sense.?" Horace chuckled.

Maureen smiled and said, "Yes, that makes sense. I mean, after all, the Motel is off the beaten path and in someways I like it that way. It means that some days it's nice and quiet and I can get paperwork and house cleaning done.. yet other times, I get several people stopping by for a night or two. But my Daddy said it used to be busier way before I was around. The Motel used to be right on the main highway, so people would always see it. But after some time that changed and now, if anyone stops, it means they think they got off main highway."

At that point, Statler came back to the table with the food and said, "I'll be right back with the root beer." "Thanks, Stat. Looks good." She looked at Horace and said, "It's been awhile since I've had their food. Usually I have dinner by myself in the house. Nothing fancy but sandwiches and milk. It's what Daddy and I used to eat all the time for lunch." Statler came back with two big glasses of root beer and placed them on the table. "You guys need anything else?" Maureen quickly looked around the table and said, "Nope, I think we got everything. Thanks, Stat." "Alright. Enjoy. Just holler towards the kitchen if you need anything." "Well, let's eat," she said to Horace.

Horace took a bite of his burger..."Oh, this is good" he exclaimed. "So, the old house behind the motel...it's been in your family a long time?" He asked. "I hope I'm not being nosy, I'm just curious. Actually, the house I grew up in was the same home my father grew up in"

Maureen took a bite of her burger and swallowed. "Well, yes and no. Supposedly the house got burned down before I was born. My parents never told me why. But my Daddy rebuilt the house, seeing that we needed to keep the Motel business in the family." She took another bite and swallowed. "The house did give me the creeps when I was little, but as I got older those feelings disappeared. I had asked Daddy about the old house once, but he didn't say much. All it was about was that my grandma and him ran the place but then she died and he took it over. It wasn't until I started doing a little digging into the history of the Motel myself after Daddy passed away." She took a bite of a french fry. "Grandma wasn't exactly "alright" in the head either. She did some crazy shit "through" Daddy, if that makes sense. That was the reason why he was sent to the "madhouse" a few times. But when he met Mommy after the second time of being there, he changed his life around and loved us both very much."

Horace finished another bite of his burger..."Wow, that sounds like a long story." "I guess it's your turn now, make a story out of your motel." He took a bite of his fries and continued..."And help you make it"...He chuckled... "just as long I don't end up having to take you to the madhouse." He smiled and said "I'm sorry, I'm only kidding of course."
