Post Reply The Parlor
Posted 9/22/13
This is where I go when I want to be by myself. No one, except me and my Assistant Manager, is allowed back here. It's exactly the way Daddy left it, stuffed birds and all.

Maureen went into the parlor and sat down in Daddy's favorite chair. She always came here when she wanted to feel close to him, even though he wasn't around any more. She grabbed one of the halves of the toasted cheese sandwich that she made and took a bite. A small tear came to her eye knowing what she was doing was making her Daddy proud. Re-opening the Motel was the smartest thing she could've done. She took another bite of her sandwich. "This is all for you, Daddy," she whispered.

After talking with Chelci and Horace, Maureen went back into the parlor and sat in Daddy's favorite chair again. She pulled the cord to the light that was sitting on the nightstand next to her and grabbed a book off the shelf. It was a book on Taxidermy (which was Daddy's hobby). She flipped through it kinda slowly, but when it came to the part on Birds, she started reading it and reading Daddy's notes that he scribbled in the book. She noticed it was starting to get dark out so, she got up and flipped the Motel lights on. The Bates Motel neon sign flashed "vacancy" in bright red letters. "I should maybe have that color changed," she thought to herself. "After all, Daddy did give the place somewhat of a bad rep and having that word in red might turn people away..."

After awhile of sitting in the chair reading, Maureen got up and stretched. She put the book away and was starting to get hungry. She wondered if Horace had eaten anything yet and decided to go and ask. "Having dinner with him would help clear the air some and we could get to know each other some too," she thought as she closed the door to the office. The light was on in Cabin 12 which told her that Horace was still there. She softly knocked on the door.

Horace sat down and looked around. He hadn't been back in the parlor much at all yet. It felt like an old room, but also that Maureen had been taking good care of it, everything looked just right. He began flipping through one of the books on a nearby end table...

Maureen sat down in Daddy's chair. "Taxidermy," she said, telling Horace what the book was about. "That was Daddy's hobby, as you can see," pointing out all the stuffed birds hanging on the walls and sitting on the few tables. "I never really got into it, but I did find it intriguing when he did it. He never did any big animals, like dogs or cats. Daddy thought only birds looked well stuffed because they're rather passive to begin with." She looked down, knowing that this is the first time she's ever discussed taxidermy with anyone, let alone BE alone with a guy.

"Is that right?" He continued "It's certainly an... interesting hobby." "You ever feel like the eyes are staring right at you, or is it just me?" He joked. He set the book back down on the table and sat back in the chair. "Hey, is something wrong? You keep looking down at the floor." "Is there something on your mind?" he asked.

Maureen looked back up at him and said, "Well, it's just that... I've never discussed any of Daddy's hobbies to any guest that's stayed here," and she paused. "And," she started saying, looking away again, "I've never been alone with a boy before." She looked back up and tried to change the subject. "Are you all settled into your cabin yet?"

He smiled and said "Oh, it's ok." "I don't bite." He joked. "And I am, thanks, I feel right at home." He continued "You did a good job setting everything up." "What about you?" "You feel at home yet?" He asked.

Maureen smiled and said, "Oh, thank you. I'm glad you like the way things are set up. And yes, I do. I think it'll be a lot better now that I have someone to help me run the place." She looked down and away again. "Oh, and don't worry about if I look down. It's just a small habit I picked up from Daddy. It's not like I'm in a bad mood or anything like that." She looked up slowly and noticed he was looking up and down at her. She thought that maybe he was going to make a move on her, but she didn't show her nervousness or being hesitant. She tried to be as calm as possible.

"Oh? That's kinda cute, actually." He smiled and asked, "And you've never been alone with a boy?" "Little hard to believe, you're very pretty, I would have guessed the boys at school would have been lining up to ask you out." He said, smiling. "I'm sorry" He chuckled a bit "I hope I'm not making you feel too uncomfortable."

Maureen chuckled a little. "Well, I probably would've had boys lining up, but since they all knew who my dad was, it was pretty hard to have any boy like me. Let alone, make friends. I was kinda a loner when I was in school, but it didn't bother me. The only thing that bothered me was when I would hear kids talk about Daddy behind my back," she paused a minute. "Then I would get angry and show a side if me that I never want to show anyone ever again." She sat back down in Daddy's chair. "And thank you," she said, blushing. "I've only had one other guy tell me I was pretty. And no, you're not making me feel uncomfortable." She took a small piece of her brown hair and started twirling it between her fingers. "But yea, I never really had any friends in school and I'd hear them talk about Daddy and the things he did. I'd get into fist fights sometimes because of it."

He replied, "Oh? I was kind of a loner too, never got into fights though" He paused, "That's awful that people would do that to you, I guess I can't blame you for the fights." "It was the same thing with my family too." "At any holiday or get together I'd always end up off the side while everyone else talked together." He continued "Didn't really bother me either" He shrugged "and most of them probably wont even notice I'm gone this holiday season." He paused again for a moment then leaned forward and smiled "Hey, why don't we do something here for holidays? ...I mean, if you don't already have plans."

Maureen smiled and shook her head. "No, I don't. Ever since Daddy's been gone, I don't do much for the holidays. But if you wanna do something, I'm all for it." She kept twirling the piece of hair in between her fingers. "What do you think we should do? I don't really remember if Daddy ever did anything with the Motel during this time and I'm not sure if my Grandma," she paused. "Who I will never speak of, so please don't ask about her," Maureen told Horace. "Had any kind of Christmas lights or decorations. Then again, if she did they probably all got burned and taken out when the first house caught fire." She let go of her hair. "So I guess, we're gonna have to go get some. How do you think we should decorate the Motel? I'd like to hear your opinion if that's ok with you."

"Yea, that's fine of course." He put his hand on his chin..."Umm, I guess I wouldn't go too crazy." He continued, "Maybe just lights to outline the roof and wrapped around the posts." "Maybe get a little snowman or reindeer and put it somewhere." "You know? A giant Santa on the roof would be a little much for me." He chuckled. "I don't know though, what do you think?" He asked.
