Iam considering opening a small anime/manga store in my town but iam not 100% sure if theres enough otakus out there so iam considering buying an inventory of anime/manga and rent a corner at a local Consignment Shop the monthly price is way cheaper than renting my own store, id have a decent selection and already have a wholesale company lined up. iam thinking roughly 500 new manga titles priced under the m.s.r.p and stock new releases, posters, figures small selection of newer released anime dvds. Iam just curious if anyone would actually shop for anime at a consignment shop id advertise to local anime club conventions etc. if it does decent ill go all in and risk a store but for now it keep cost down and help me build an inventory. any suggestions would be appreciated what would you buy, anything youd want to see.

I'd say yes. And do so in the sense of how all anime stores are in the anime with enthusiastic greetings. Thats all you really need. Don't let down your dreams!

I'd do it, there's no anime stores here in Utah that I know of and it kind of sucks having to order everything in online.

I don't know where you live.

The "closest" anime store near me is in New York. I don't like ordering online either.
Go for it.

I think it's a pretty good Idea, but as far as anime merchandise is concerned, I wouldn't stock much in figures and such, most are pretty expensive and moving them could be fairly difficult. You can offer special orders for figures for those who actually want them. There is a local shop near me that stocks cheap anime merchandise like manga volumes and things people use like bags and such and offers special orders for pretty much any merchandise they don't carry in store.

Shops tend to have an enjoyable atmosphere. I think I'd keep in many of the best known titles for starters. Always try to accommodate any order requests. Set up a nice little reading area by the manga and set up a TV with some show playing on it.

Occasionally hold after hour social gatherings in the store. Invite people to enjoy some shows. Discuss upcoming titles. COSPLAY ORGIES nah I'm just playin'.

This is true. All there is anymore is Hastings and a tiny selection at Best Buy and rarely any at Walmart.

I miss the days of going to Mediaplay in Riverdale. I'd getup early before work or whenever and go down there. I went through so much money building my collection through there, then FYE came in, closed, and now there's just a Gordman's, which is for clothing and other crap for your home.

Yep, I'd probably be a frequent shopper lol. I've spent I think roughly 350 on stuff this month, have another 200+ order for next month, and as long as I could be guaranteed stock (mainly figures, where stock can run through quick and preorders start months in advance sometimes) I'd be a dedicated shopper.

Just offering at competitive prices would suffice in my opinion. Most shops already sell under MSRP, but nothing beats a brick and mortar store where you can walk right in and actually see the merch in person.

This is typically how things go for me when ordering overseas. I pretty much only do EMS shipping, which runs at least 10 bucks or so for shipping alone. I know I could other means, but I'm like a little girl when it comes to having to wait for stuff in the mail. So anywho, the problem there is that while it arrives fast, I'm never home when it would normally be dropped off. So instead I get the little card, then have to take time out during lunch to go get the package. It'd be fantastic if there were local spots that could remove that hassle.

I would. There is no stores dedicated to only manga and anime in Toronto. Well, that's just my knowledge..

I only live about two hours from Houston which has like five anime specific stores, so I would usually just go to one of them. But if I had no access to those, no internet, and no Barnes & Nobels near by, sure I would.

I would love to. I want to browse first. I don't like being pressured like I'm in a car dealership or something.
