The CR article on perspective got me thinking, and since it would be interesting to see how anime has changed or not changed over the past 20 years, I'll list all the OVAs, Movies and TV Anime that premiered from September 1993 until December 1, 1993. Since a lot of these won't be familiar, I'll include the synopsis from MAL as well as their MAL links.

Synopsis: It is the dawn of the 21st century. Mankind has terraformed and colonized Mars. But we are not alone in the universe. An ancient race of alien beings, known only as `The Gods`, has been watching mankind`s progress...and waiting. Now, these mysterious aliens have returned to halt mankind`s expansion into space...by force.

Now, the planet named after the God of War will become our final battlefield, as mankind fights a desperate battle with the latest in high-tech, military hardware: hyper-advanced aircraft, orbital fighters, and gigantic, desert battleships brimming with the most advanced weaponry.

But will it be enough? The aliens have awesome, incredibly destructive weapons at their disposal - including `Hell` - an unstoppable stealth carrier. But the alien`s primary weapon is insidiously quiet and invisible - a mind control plaque. Incurable. Inevitable. Contagious. Humans are powerless to resist its effects, which transforms even the most loyal soldiers into dangerous subversives.

Our last hope lies with Captain Akuh and the crew of the Battleship Aoba. If his top-secret mission is successful, mankind will deal a decisive blow to the alien armada. But Akuh`s girlfriend is showing signs of nymphomania - the first symptom of alien subversion!

Haven't seen any of those. Had only heard of three. (Slam Dunk and Tenchi Muyo! And, of course, Hello Kitty)
Posted 9/23/13
Out of all of those, I've only seen Tenchi Muyo! (One of my very personal favorites). Hello Kitty on the other hand, I haven't seen the anime series, but I do know somewhat about that cat.

Like pretty much everyone else the only ones I have heard about are Tenchi, Slam Dunk, and Hello Kitty with Tenchi Muyo! being the only one I have watched.

And yet I still run into people who have such a hard on for 90s and before anime as if every series released was a hit and yet look at this and from this one season there are only 3 that pretty much the few of us who have replied have even recognized. We don't even know the quality of the other series here. But at least a few of them have to be bad(every season has a couple of bad shows).

I find this true for all entertainment (books, movies, TV, music, and anime). There are plenty of things I've gone back to partake of 15-20 years later and found that they were not as good as I remember. There are a few that stand the test of time, but most turn out to be just OK at best.
IMO, a classic is something that you or just about anyone else can come back to15+ years after it came out and it still be considered good. There is a reason that there are only two or three titles that people recognize on this list. They are the classics.

I don't know if the Hello Kitty anime is a classic or not and we all probably recognize it simply cause we know who the hell Hello Kitty is. :P

Still point stands. I mean it is even happening with things just from the last 10 or so years even. I have seen I don't know how many anime just from the 2000s and only a small amount has stuck with me like FMA or Gurren Lagann or Samurai Champloo.

I've heard mermaids scar is pretty good, it's on my plan to watch list.

People are going to find a reason to like an anime more than another... Doesn't matter if other people don't know about it, not everyone recognizes the same anime as a classic.

Mermaid Scar still creeps me out a little. Watched it because I heard it was by the same person who did Ranma 1/2 so I went in expecting Comedy not Horror

Slam Dunk I enjoyed

Tenchi I've always enjoyed

Big Wars.....I know I've seen it. I recognize the plot synopsis but I can't for the life of me remember a single thing about it.

To be fair, some people would recognize the ongoing series that would have also have been on the air in 1993:
Dragon Ball Z
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Sailor Moon R(2nd season of Sailor Moon. Premiered Spring 1993)
Yu Yu Hakushou

But I wanted to make the best "apples to apples" comparison I could, so I only selected those that premiered during the fall, and even then I probably missed a few due to how I was utiliziling the search parameters.

As someone already mentioned, you could always find a way to watch some of them.

http://www.crunchyroll.com/slam-dunk (Not certain if that's available in the UK).
