This has been a topic that I have been kicking around in my head for a while now.

As we all know, many anime are set in the high schools or focus on characters who are supposedly of high school age. I say "supposedly" because sometimes I am totally confused on how old the characters are by action. Now, a brief scan of wikipedia reveals that "high school" in Japan typically starts at ago 15-16, which is only a year later than when most American kids start high school.

As an example of my confusion, allow me to present an example from my favorite anime, Blast of Tempest. Both Mahiro and Yoshino are stated to be second year high school students, which would place them in the 16-17 year old age range. But then I watch this show and watch the depth of emotion and thought that each of them express over the course of the show and I ask myself, "Are 16 or 17 year old kids capable (emotionally, etc.) of what I just watched?"

Furthermore, we also a weird mixture across anime where Mahiro and Yoshino are the same age as the characters in Kiniro Mosaic at the end of the series.

=?

Wut.

And I don't remember anyone in my high school acting like the girls in Kiniro Mosaic.

So what do you guys think? Is high school just used as a setting, where behaviors don't have to match the supposed age of the characters? Or I am simultaneously over-estimating AND under-estimating the capabilities of high school students? Has my memory of those days truly become so jaded in these past 2.5 years?

what about this kid?

Ciel Phantomhive-Kuroshitsuji

He isn't even in school but takes over the family business while acting older than his age.

Anime is strange when it comes to age.

Am I the only one who thinks it's cliché to make an anime character around first high school/ first year middle school? I can't be the only one, right?

This is one thing I have never liked about anime / manga. Always teenagers, very few exceptions. ... See, in real life, I've got two teenage kids. Save the world? Ha. Let's see 'em do some housework first.

Possibly the craziest are those twelve year old characters that behave like they're adults in any situation.

That's mostly due to culture. Japan has a huge fixation on High School in all it's forms. From TV Drama's, Movies, to Anime. They have a special bonus word for "High school Girl"

Japan is absurdly interested in High School. You'll see little girls, delinquents, coming of age stories, harems and romances, adventures and comedies and shounen-actions.

The demographics line up nicely here. Teenagers and other young-bloods relate and are interested in these characters, while adults like to fondly remember when they themselves were like these characters. You got the high readers and high buyers here.

Part of why the "Moe-blob" is so popular is due to how well it sells. Shows in that Genre are more often trying to get it's perverted fans to buy merchandise more than stand as a show by it's lonesome. A number of Harem's are similar here.

One reason I really like High School DxD is due to it not being one of those Merch-grabbers. They're making fun of them!

I know, because if I want to buy a IS; Infinite Stratos figure, I got 4 versions of every girl, including at least one swimsuit for each girl. If I want something K-on based, I've got endless choices.

But if I want a single character from High School DxD, I get a single naked-chick figure, and the Blu-ray/DvD release. It happens time and again yah know!

You shouldn't judge any character by their appearance.

Take the Monogatari series, case in point, Hachikuji.

The conversations she has with other characters, especially Ararararagi are not what you would expect to hear lol

^hilarious. Pretty much the point I was trying to make. Now, I'm only 20, but heck-I'm not fooling myself. I don't really see myself having the capability to save the world.

Then again, I do sorta believe in "necessity breeds ability," so maybe if I had to, I could do it.

Could the same principle apply in anime? Maybe, but in anime it's more like a law of nature.

I've honestly come to a point where I ignore the age factor in the setting of an anime. Even if it's set in a high school, I pretty much have learned to block out any and all concerns for the effect of the characters' ages. It just makes it easier on my sensibilities.

In the high school setting, moe anime will typically net you younger looking characters (Lucky Star, anything KyoAni) because it looks cute, anything else will net you characters with a much older looking disposition in order to give them the appearance and visual validity in the likely very cosmic and powerful things they are going to do in the anime.

It makes sense to me *shrug. I don't watch anime for realism.
