To be honest I'd really like to hear some serious stuff here. So I encourage good theories:) Of course we already have the story about Hisoka's favorite gum and that other texture surprise thing so you may connect your theories to those facts. And yes, you can add lame/funny theories. But be creative as much as possible! Let the hunt for the best theory begin! You may post more than a single theory if something better pops up.

Very interesting topic :)

So my guess is that Hisoka was some kind of circus performer, I got this idea not only because of his clothes haha, but during the hunter examination in trick tower, the way Hisoka was dodging those former examiners knife attacks kinda reminded me of a circus act.
Hisoka was probably abandoned as a kid and taken in by this Nen using circus, where he was trained to became a circus performer and had to go trough years of training before he was allowed to learn Nen.
Hisoka was taught Nen by the owner of the circus who was a person he admired and respected, however one day they were all killed inlcuding his teacher but Hisoka barely managed to survive, Hisoka came to know he was not strong enough and needed to fight strong people in order to reassure himself that he was not weak.
Through the years he became a well respected poker player and won many games, since he had so much love for the game he decided to use his cards as his weapons.

Or

Hisoka could just be a genius who learnt Nen without having any help and just happened to come across it one day.

Wow. That's a great backstory! Good observations too! I'm still gathering some observations until last night so I will post my own version a bit later. But yours kinda makes me rethink my theory.

Really!?, I would have thought that Hisoka working in a circus would be kinda cliché since he looks like a crazy clown.

But there could be grim stories behind circuses. You know how they say there's a lonely face/soul behind that happy mask. And I've never really seen a story like that even though we say its already a cliche.

Now that I think about it, I haven't seen any anime about clowns.

Exactly. Me neither. I think because it's largely Western. But it's gonna be awesome to see one. Hisoka's own spin-off!

Yea It be would interesting to see how it would turn out, for instance the idea of having a pirate show sounded pretty stupid to me before but One Piece managed to pull it off pretty good

I do like the Circus Act theory

Here's my theory :

Prologue : (Anything to do with Hisoka being an orphan, raised by a horrible family, or being bullied by people, etc. (Anything traumatic)

At a young age Hisoka went to a magic show and witnessed several performances from various magicians, it was then that he began his pursuit in becoming a magician, he learned several tricks from fellow magicians, but there was one particular magician he was interested in most, His / Her name was (As of now we'll call this magician) "AX".

Hisoka visited AX often during his early years (they even became friends) there was something special about AX he couldn't figure out, his tricks were just too bizarre for him to believe, months have gone by and their bond is now at its peak. AX finally reveals his secret to Hisoka what is known to be called as "Nen". AX (amazed with Hisoka's potential) starts his teachings with the Four Major Principles and later with Nen. Hisoka was a fast learner, and accomplished his training with AX in no time. And that's how he learned Nen :D

Epilogue : (Anything to do with Hisoka going to far with his abilities, going on a powertrip and killing / betraying AX cause he was powerful, etc. (anything leading up to the current Hisoka))

Sorry guys. Instead of making a theory, I ended up making my own backstory for Hisoka. Please forgive my grammar mistakes and I hope you'll all like what I came up with. I did not follow the 1999 version of the anime wherein Hisoka said he came from a poor family. I made it slightly different.

Hisoka's Backstory

Hisoka came from the same place where Biscuit also came from. It is called Sōdō, a town near Heaven's Arena in the Republic of Padokia. It was a place similar to York New City only, it doesn't have high rise buildings to this day. It's filled with people who make money from killing, stealing, prostitution and gambling. He was raised by his father but at the age of 4, his dad left him to a couple who promised to take good care of him but whose real intentions were only to take the money his dad left for his kid's needs. His dad left to finish a long term job, the detail of which, are not gonna be revealed here.

Hisoka does not remember what his dad looked like. His only memory of him was of that one day when his dad brought him a snack which included 4 pieces of artificial tattoo called Texture Surprise and ever since, he had always asked his dad to buy him that snack even until the last day that they saw each other. He was too in-love with the snack that it erased the memory of his dad's image in his head. After his dad left, the couple who were supposed to take care of Hisoka kicked him out of their house. And for three years, Hisoka wandered around Sōdō. He survived by stealing food from other people's kitchens and in stores. He learned the ways of the street at a very young age, able to fend for himself.

At the age of 7, Hisoka loved going to gambling houses. He always had a gum in his mouth while playing. He made money by stealing from people and he would always win every game he'd ever played. The gambling place allowed children inside. Whenever he needed to go, he has an escape route to avoid people from stealing his win. Hisoka learned to play cards and became very good at it. He has very keen senses. Very keen that he always manages to win even on big gambling tournaments. He never really paid much attention but at one point Hisoka realized that he's actually always been carrying a deck of cards in his pocket.

One day there was a ruckus that took place in the gambling house. Chaos. All the cards went flying in the air when around 12 armed men started to fire their guns at a guy who just stood there at the entrance. He couldn't see where all the bullets went, they didn't seem to hit anything but the armed men continuously fired at the guy, whose age was around in his late 20's. Hisoka was trapped behind a slot machine which was just behind seven of the 12 gunmen. It was chaotic. Suddenly, he felt an intense force rushing towards his direction. It was so intense that his hair began to raise. He closed his eyes and then when he opened it, the gunmen in front of him were all gone... including the slot machine he was using as cover. Without realizing it, Hisoka had been exposed to nen.

One day, Hisoka was face to face with a game shark. He was on the verge of losing , with no money left. But even then, he was still very eager to win. That was when he discovered a trick... to change his losing cards to winning combinations. He wasn't really sure at first but it started when he had a bad deal and focused his attention and imagination on the cards and suddenly the cards changed into winning pairs. Next up, he was able to change paper into money. Hisoka was in fights all the time because of his ability and in that he always wins. One evening, he went to a carnival to watch circus performances. He saw a clown doing some magic tricks and focused on the clown's hands. There, Hisoka saw the aura of the clown while it was performing tricks. The clown was able to manipulate his aura into different shapes which suddenly materialize into real objects, making the people excited. Hisoka realized he can also do the same. He later on left the town of Sodo and went to the town where the Heaven's Arena is.

Hisoka learned about the Heaven's arena after a month of stay there. There he began taking interest in combat fights. He fought and reached the 150th floor after 8 months. Slowly but steadily, he learnt more about what he could do with his aura before he stepped on the 200th floor. That's also where he found out that there are different nen types. For Hisoka, he had a clear understanding of the personalities of the people he fought with. Dishonest, straightforward, fickle-minded, all sorts of personalities which somehow relate to their abilities. Growing in the streets enabled him to discern people. Hisoka never undergo the water-divination test but it was very clear to him, with 100% accuracy, which nen-type people belonged to and that played to his advantage all the time. At 200th, his first fight was against a skilled temple master who knew how to use nen and paper (similar to Kalluto's ability but was a bit weaker). Hisoka survived this fight using his bungee gum and cards. This was the first time he applied his aura to the gum in his mouth. Knowing perfectly the gum's properties, he was able to use it to his advantage and later on easily able to transmute his aura into a gum. At first he was only able to apply his nen on his cards. He's been using this throughout the 100th-199th floor fights. But due to the formidable ability of his enemy, he quickly invented the Bungee Gum, so called after his favorite brand of chewing gum. His first win at the 200th wasn't very easy. He was 8 years old.

Another 9 months have passed and Hisoka earned 4 more wins until he met this hunter who was able to read his every move. This was his first defeat. He was so curious about what a hunter is so he decided he wanted to find out what being a hunter is all about. He decided to leave the Heaven's arena after 8 wins. He was 10 years old when he left. He worked as a body guard to train before joining the Hunter exam. He was skilled enough to pass as a highly paid guard of a wealthy family. While being a guard, he was paired with 3 people who were highly skilled too. Two of them were hunters, able to use nen at amateur level. Hisoka never let these two hunters find out that he knew what nen is and how to use it. He observed and learned as much from them while they do their job. They never trusted him. They hated Hisoka because he's young, cocky and always wins the boss's favor. For three years though, Hisoka had been strengthening his Nen while improving at the same time all his abilities and skills in combat.

Hisoka's boss had a beautiful wife. He really liked this woman and been looking forward to be with her even when he was only 13. Li, one of his fellow guards who knows how to use nen, knew about his feelings about the bosses wife. One evening while the boss wasn't around, his wife went to see Hisoka in his room. Not knowing that the wife was under the control of Li, a manipulator, Hisoka succumbed to the boss wife's flirting. Li removed his control over the bosses wife and she started screaming. The whole mansion immediately found out about what happened. Of course this was a set up made by Li and then was their chance to get rid of him and so all the three guards pursued Hisoka. Hisoka went mad because of their connivance. This was the first time he let out all his pent up aura that he nurtured all those years. It was immense and powerful. All people in that mansion except of course for the two who knew how to defend themselves, died because of the hatsu he released which was filled with hatred and malice. With so much ease, he slew both Li and the other hunter.

Now that Hisoka knew how strong he is, he started to think of fighting stronger opponents to test himself. But first off, he wanted to still get a hunter license and find out more about the hunter association. But even before he joined, while waiting for the exam, Hisoka already killed 6 hunters, all of which are skilled at mid-pro level. The first three, he found via his previous employer's connections. The rest, he targeted based on their connections to his previous kills. He wanted to test his abilities but it ended up becoming a pleasurable ordeal - meeting a strong opponent and escape death from the hands of fighters who are as strong or even stronger than him. When the exam began, Hisoka breezed though it's first stage. There were a few skilled examinees who joined during that time as well. When the second stage of the exam began, the second examiner showed a hint of knowing about the murder of his fellow hunters in the hands of Hisoka. This made the examiner feel a bit of remorse and bias against Hisoka. Hisoka being all keen and sensitive, felt this animosity from the examiner and decided to kill him. He did not succeed though in his attempt and he was disqualified from the exam.

After 4 more years, Hisoka became even more powerful. He's 17 years of age. He started dressing up like a clown and changed his name into what it is now. His former name was unknown.. The clown-look was inspired by the clown he saw performing conjurer trick at the carnival when he was young. For him, the joker outfit conceals the evil grin he has in his heart, his self-conceit and desire to kill. During this time in his life, he had a random encounter with Machi and Illumi in a street carnival while the two were in some kind of a date. The two looked like lovers in Hisoka's eyes. He tailed Machi and when she was finally all alone, Hisoka asked her for a date. Illumi was suddenly behind him and when he turned Machi vanished from the scene. It became a heated confrontation between Illumi and Hisoka. At first, Hisoka was taken by surprise so Illumi was able to land 3 powerful blows. But then Hisoka snapped and released his evil aura. A master escapist, Illumi already had a ninja-like way of disappearing in the dark, he sensed Hisoka's dark aura. But before he left, Illumi warned Hisoka of Machi's affiliation that she's a member of the Phantom troupe. Hisoka was rather intrigued by this warning. Illumi was enthralled by the darkness in Hisoka's aura so he asked the latter if he'd accept assassination jobs but Hisoka told him that he kills whoever he fancies to kill. A blade made out of card poised in between his fingers were ready to strike Illumi. However, it came to Hisoka that Illumi might lead him to Machi and to this Phantom Troupe, which during that time was already famous for some high profile criminal cases. Illumi threw Hisoka a Zoldyck business card with his name on it and then disappeared in the dark.

A month later, Hisoka began working with Illumi. They assassinated the floor master at floor 228. There, Hisoka learned about Illumi's abilities and thought he could use him for later. Years have passed and Hisoka got more information about the Phantom Troupe. He learned about the leader Chrollo Lucilfer too but never got the chance to meet him until when he was 24 years old. He asked to join the Troupe but was told he needs to defeat one of the members to qualify. He later on faced in a battle, Omokage who he defeated in the fight but didn't kill. Chrollo granted Hisoka Omokage's number (#4) and considered him an official member of the Troupe. Hisoka learned some of the Troupe's secret but Chrollo remained elusive and had always been surrounded by 2 or more members all the time.

Another assignment came up for Illumi but this time he needed a Hunter license. He asked Hisoka if he wanted to tag along and told him he might need a hunter license in some of his future jobs too with the Troupe. Out of boredom, waiting for his chance to fight Chrollo, he joined Illumi in getting his hunter license. That's when he met Gon.

@benjaminlimos I really enjoyed reading that, but i questioned a lot of ideas you had, mainly because of how Hisoka was in episode 16. (Also, how long did it take you to write all that?!? haha)

My alternative backstory (originally it was longer but i wanted to make it shorter :P) :

Scientists kidnap Hisoka as a child along with other children as an experiment. The experiment was to make a fighter so strong that he is able to defeat anyone. (perhaps to be used to rule the world, a bodyguard, or to be used to gamble with by entering the heavens arena).

They inject Hisoka with a virus that was thought to make the fighter have stronger Nen and to make the user most excited when fighting stronger opponents.

well the scientists never predicted the after effects of the virus. At first Hisoka acted as he was supposed to, he was considered the best out of all the other children who were given the virus, but with each opponent he fought he would always enter a bloodthirsty rage and his power would be among the strongest out of many hunter in the world.

With Hisoka the sole survivor of the experiment the scientists finally release him, but with the strength Hisoka now has, he turns on them and kills them.

(lol i know there are some loopholes like no bungee gum or anything about the clown outfit, but i think Hisoka being part of a failed lab experiment seems pretty cool considering how psychotic he looked in episode 16 :P)
