Do Anime characters look Caucasian to you?
Posted 2/3/08
in the past, i have commented on how non-asian characters look. and then i think, if they don't look the slightest bit causasian, why the heck are they speaking japanese?

I think they are basically Japanese/Korean structure so that viewers can relate. But to beautify the characters in relation to the times, they perfected the human body and face by adding western features that go well with their looks. One of the biggest features are big eyes. Not to mention that big eyes are sort of a guideline for cartoons to allow different expressions. That's why thin eyed characters are usually 1 dimension.

And there are also some guidelines they use on appearance that are universal. But anime usually idealizes soft, androgynous features. White kids seem to be able to look more like anime child characters while Asians tend to look more like Anime after childhood because of the softer, feminine appearance compared to Caucasians. Chiseled cheeks aren't popular in Japan or Korea. And female characters are even more softened to the point where they often look way younger than their age. Sometimes to the point where they look like kids while being in their 20s. I think Asian/Caucasian mix will best describe the characters. An Asian girl with some western features that people like or a Caucasian girl with very childlike, soft features.

I think "white" features such as larger eyes, red hair etc. are admired in Japanese culture. Fine by me! I totally LOVE Japanese men so I have a leg up!

I thought the artists were showing more German and American characters in their shows to continually remind people of their connections to WWII. That's the only way I could explain all the blondes and redheads in every anime, trying to pass themselves off as Japanese.

And yeah, all black people do look stupid in animes and stick out like a sore thumb. But then we have Tenjou Tenge, finally a black man as pimp as all the rest. But his name is BOB!!
WTF?!?!?! At least they are trying to be diverse now.

i agree that black people in manga/anime do stick out like sore thumbs. and really with names like bob. omg. i have to amit when i saw that and heard that name i had a gigglefit.

i think to tell you the truth it really depends on how the artist(s) draw and how they want a character to appear.

It depends on how realistic they draw the characters, if they look very cartoonish like in Pokemon or Slayers, then you have very little to go on when it comes to figuring out what 'race' they are. o

On the other hand shows like GTO tend to go for a more realistic look for most part but none the less they seem to like giving the many of the characters hair and skin colours that you would normally only see on whites.

I suspect that the artists who want them coloured like that must find the generic Japanese look (straight black hair, brown eyes) a tad dull and find the wide range of skin, hair and eye colours of non Japanese appealing from an artist POV.

(I might have a 95 IQ but I think I use what limited grey matter I have reasonably well)

Hmmm. You know, this is pretty much on-the-money. Hopefully things will change. Otherwise, now that I think about it, I don't usually feel that most Anime characters are obviously Japanese looking.
