What do you feel are Attack on Titan's shortcomings?
Posted 9/25/13
I stumbled upon the series through torrents. It seemed to have a decent amount of downloads, so I downloaded it, on my own initiative, to check it out, I was bored. And while I was downloading it I took a quick read to figure out what it was about. Seemed like total shit, to me. The story, and the stupid looking outfits. Those giant lunchboxes on their hips. And titans? Scandinavian trolls? lol. Give me a break. I defeated tons of those when I was 5 years old. But I watched the first episode regardless of my first impression. And it was good. Better than I expected.

The shock effect worked. Boom. Lots of people were scared. Lots of people were dying. Blood. Gore. Yes. I like this. Why? Because if it doesn't entice me I'm bored. But I'm used to it. I've experienced worse. So the shock effect, to me, isn't all that shocking. The anime has action, but it also knows when to calm down with the use of dialogue, to create an understanding of what's going on; the severity of the moment, and to build up sentimental depth and value (drama) for the next action scene.

The only time I felt like it was bad was when Levi was introduced. He looked like a six year old with a bowl haircut. So, to me, he didn't feel very badass at all. I'm close to 30 years old soon, so there's little to no chance in hell that I'm going to feel any form of admiration or awe for a little boy with a bowl haircut. And it looks ridiculous when he's acting psycho. I mean, come on. I still don't care for him much, but I've learned to appreciate him through character development.

I am a huge fan of AoT, but even then I can see some shortcomings with the series, such as some inconsistent character development, with some characters introduced only to die literally just a few seconds later.

Rivailles' height is so questionable but his skills make up for it.

For the first few episodes, Eren annoyed me with his tendency to overreact to just about everything.

Sorry to disappoint?

But that said... I'm not. Not at all.

If you want to talk about why a show has flaws, awesome.

(Something that did annoy me about the show... It seems like for the first several episodes there's no real... I guess acting. Everyone just screams. It got pretty old pretty fast, though afterwards when I started One Piece I was all. Oh! So this is what AoT was going for!)

Yeah, we don't need hate threads. Other sites are better for flame wars.

virtually no character development
it's way too shounen
the vast majority of the dialogue is screaming
the entire purpose of AoT is to attempt to shock while having implausible amounts of blood splatter as cannon fodder attacks OP enemies

your watching it for all the wrong reasons It's like Highschool of the Dead not a show about plot it's about mindless fun. But if you want deep plot and all that go watch Fate/Zero it's nothing but plot

If that was what AoT was treated like, it wouldn't bother me. But there seem to be a lot of attempts to depict the show as an epic tragic tale masterfully showcasing the faults and struggles of humanity, which...no. It's too campy, and tries too hard to look like it has substance while rarely actually producing any.

It actually does have character development, but it's a mixed bag. Armin's developed quite a bit, and can probably join Hanji on the (very) short list of intelligent characters. Mikasa's gotten somewhat more stereotypical. Eren hasn't changed in the slightest; he seems to actively resist it, and the show can't quite decide whether that's a bad thing or not.

It's just a zombie apocalypse story, except the zombies are really big so the characters can do daring jetpack stunts while fighting them. That's all. Well, that and random mecha/NGE influences. It's fun to watch, but I don't see why liking or disliking it has become so contentious.

Agreed. Judging by the OP's snarky responses so far I'm pretty sure this is nothing more than a troll thread.

problem is whether you like it or not, because it IS a shounen I see this going for 100+ episodes of melodrama which has already started to wear of from the first 3

Yeah he does that allot in the anime, he seems allot more clam and collected in the manga, because of how he is in the anime we got the glorious 15 minutes of filler in episode 24

Remember, if someone doesn't agree with you, they just call you a troll.

I thought trolling was saying something, you may like or agree with it, but you dislike and disagree with it just to get attention and make people angry?
