I have quite a lot of ''Online'' friends who I've met on a bunch of games, or in some of the previous clans I was part of.
I just like how it's easy to talk to someone who's on the other side of the world, you know.

I would say online friends are common. However, close online friends that you would actually figure out a way to meet them in person maybe not as much.

For me making friends online is a little easier, I feel like I can open up easier online through chat or forums then through like personal interaction. I am horrible with intros / keeping the conversation going in person, but online not as much. So it has helped me meet some cool people that I would consider to be a friend.

I do have one "online" friend that we have tried figuring out how to see each other, just finances feel short this summer. I met him years ago on animenfo radio and the little chatroom they had. We would email and chat back and forth for years to where we finally shared real life information. Then we exchanged phone numbers and would text, talk and send pictures of random things (mainly to rub in a tasty dessert or a cool anime thing). That went of for two years to the point that we are plotting going to AX together to see each other in person.

I don't like to say "online friends" if you're my friend, you're my friend.

it's tough to make real life friends, there are a lot of people who take advantage of that friendship, and sometimes things like social class, race and sexuality get in the way of friendships... it's a fact, not an opinion.

I mean, I don't know how many people don't befriend for the simple fact that I'm gay... or Asian... but this is the reality of things. I can't force people to accept me... they have to learn to do it themselves.

I actually nod on this. It's even suckier when you get abandoned because the other people they befriended have more money/gadgets.
Things get more interesting when there's money.

I have a few I'm really close with and still talk to on skype (wow even online I only have a few haha)
They're the most mature friends I have, since I'm friends with more younger people than not irl.

Tbh, I don't really like the fact that they live far far away from where I am. It makes it really hard to stay in touch with each other when they have a bad connection or something, or just when they don't have time to get on the computer.
I also prefer talking face to face to friends rather than texting/chatting so we don't talk as much as we would like to.

i have had a few close online friends, problem is sometimes unless your involved in each others lives daily and talk on a regular basis its much easier to drift apart i guess. but i find it much easier to make friends online then i ever do in person.

I have a rule for myself--if I don't know the person in the real world, I won't "befriend" the person online. Maybe I'm just overly cautious, but you never know who's really on the other end when it comes to the Internet.

I've more online friends than friends in real life. More people on the internet will accept you for who you are. I must say that I've made friends online and over a period of time we've eventually become best friends.

I made many friends online through gaming.

It started out with Red Alert 2 and Warcraft 3. I met some genuinely decent people and hung around with them for years after also. I'm part of a gaming clan now too and since we use voice coms and forums all the time we get on great.

Albeit that being said, since I joined the multi-national multi-platform-gaming clan I tend to not interact with many people outside of it anymore (on the internet I mean, I do have an actual social life too), and as for meeting people in other forums or chatooms, I don't do this. I dunno why, but I'd rather have an online friend I can interact with and play games with instead of try to form some serious relationship or chat until 3am about anime.

I'd say it's fairly common to have online friends now in this age, with all the MMO's, game clans for like CoD and Starcraft, and stuff like that, it's easy to "meet" people you've never actually met and become friends with them. Heck in my years of MMO experience I have actually MET some of the people I originally only knew online.

That said though I can't imagine it past the gaming centre... I guess some people could become friends with someone on say like CR here and meet them out of it, say at like a convention or something, but I don't think I could do say... online dating? Where I have to meet someone online and then think about a relationship with said person.
