My first impression is that they took Gintoki from Gintama, smacked him in the face with a backstory from Dogs: Bullets & Carnage, and then dropped him into Final Fantasy in a hybrid Cloud/Vincent outfit.

And while there he randomly trips in and out of fighting games with terrible draw distance...

No hate on the game since I don't know anything about it, but this anime doesn't exactly come across well.

Since I already know the full story, I know what's going down. But The pacing is too fast.

I tried to imagine what someone who hasn't played the games would think, and I'd imagine they're very confused.

To be fair though, I was confused for like the first half of the game.

Blazblue story in the game was like a jigsaw puzzle. You don't even get a tiny hint at the big picture until you put piece and piece together little by little, until you can make it out.

When I first played Calamity Trigger I was really confused for like 60% of the game.

Then it all made sense, and it hit me like a runner's high.

They need to work on character development. I didn't get any sense that Ragna was being really nice to Tao.

I know it's just the first episode.

The only thing wrong is the pacing. fix that and I think this could be great. The fighting is slightly above average IMO.

The character dialogue is interesting enough in the game to keep me very entertained. They should expand on that, which would be easy. Then blow most of their work on fight scenes to make them really stand out. I'd rather have 1 REALLY EPIC fight scene once every couple of episodes. Than to have 5 in one that are mediocre.

Just my 2 cents.

Far inferior to the game unfortunately. For those who don't know, YES, it is a fighting game with quite an intricate story and lore, it's not like Street Fighter.

First thing that disappointed me was the opening. Watch that piece of shit opening, then watch these :

Calamity Trigger : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG-5GcpnLAE
Continuum Shift : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9o0lt9NWac
CS Extended : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oP4aLNQ6Fo

Second thing is, it is like an abridged version of the game. They included and dragged out the stupid Taokaka / Ragna scene, while they cut down on the Jin / Ragna fight.

Third thing, the action is horrible. They don't even have the characters use their signature moves. Where was Jin's ice car and ice swords, or fubuki. He threw like a friggin Ice Cube at Ragna.

Final Verdict : They really should not have tried to animate it in this form. What they should have done is animated a part of the game that has yet to be fleshed out and made this a prequel. Either 1) The original timeline before Amaterasu started looping, or 2) Ragna's adventures as Blood Edge and how he helped the 6 Heroes defeat the Black Beast.

Hopefully a true adaption of guilty gear follows after the new game.
Much more deserving of an anime.

But hey.... we get more, "BIG BROTHER!!!" and rachel at least.

after (finally...) getting to watch the episode, it wasn't so terribly bad.. very fast paced, but they're also focusing on only Ragna and Noel's portions of the story, so far.

they actually used what sounds like arranged versions of the character's songs from Calamity Trigger, but the music volume was so low, you can barely hear it, which is disappointing. only one you could hear decently was Under Heaven Destruction during the Jin and Ragna fight (which is actually the correct theme, as it's the Jin vs Ragna song from the game.)

animation quality was alright, but nothing amazing, that's for sure. and having the OP animation be clips from the first episode? that's just incredibly lazy. the ED wasn't much better, and the song was pretty bleh compared to the rest of the soundtrack. although, having Lambda, Tsubaki, and Platinum in the ED makes me wonder if they plan to delve into the Continuum Shift story as well..

If there is anyone who is having 2nd thoughts on watching the seires, I'd say ignore the bad animation and just stay for the characters and story, because compared to MOST anime I've seen this season, Blazblue's world would probably be in the top 5. MOST of the complaints are based off animation and pacing, but if you can handle a show while ignoring those aspects then I highly recommend Blazblue and despite my massive disappointment, I'll still finish the series, because no anime this year has ever made me rush to my computer to watch a series other than Blazblue.

Honestly, this isn't as bad as I feared it would be. Yeah, the pacing's a bit rushed, but to be honest there isn't that much content in the one game, they just drag it out by having people talk way longer then they should. Sure it's confusing as hell, but the games are the same way. I had to start wiki searching to figure out what was going on and what the terms meant. My only big complaint so far is the animation, which is very dated looking. You can tell they were trying to cut back everywhere they could, as it seems almost no one but the characters are around and the area Ragna and Jin fought in is supposed to be a big open area with intricate detail.

Still, it's far better then most of the shows this season, which I think is pretty dry for a fall season.

The story really isn't all that confusing, it is just cryptic. In the game you are supposed to figure out what is going on by playing through all the characters' story lines. Actually, Jin's story line pretty much gives away the entire plot of Calamity Trigger.

If you have ever watched Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the story is very similar to that. Actually Blazblue is basically Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni in a FF7-ish setting.

Also, if you do get interested in the story, I recommend the game. It is a fighting game primarily, but the story portion plays out like a visual novel. Essentially it is a fully voiced visual novel, with fighting game battles, but if you set it to very easy, you can completely ignore the battles.

This is 100% subjective, I'd argue the other way. Blazblue has a much more elaborated story, and characters you can care for simply because these games have had a strong story mode.

Not saying Guilty Gear can't get on that level because it can.

But to say it's more deserving is very lacking. I'm willing to bet Blazblue's success or fail will decide whether or not Guilty Gear gets an Anime.

I would say the animation in here is not that bad and the characters are okay from the start. I only watched this for the story even though I haven't played the game.

I sort of lost track of the story so I have to repeat some scenes again and ost was kind of decent imo. Overall it is a decent start but I hope they don't like throw everything that is important one episode at a time.

I think you guys are being too impatient and harsh on it, lol. It is a fighting anime based on a fighting game so you should watch it if you want to see fighting. I predict that they are saving most of the budget (and animation) for the climax/end fighting scenes, hence why the OP and first episode have limited animation. Especially since they are dealing with (it seems...) time travel/loops, the first episode or two is probably going to be something that makes more sense when watching after the last episode has been seen. If you don't know anything about BlazBlue AND don't care too much to watch 'person x meets person y, they fight.' then this probably isn't the show for you.

tl;dr skimped on animation to save it for later, more epic parts (forced by limited budget, not laziness).
