Well, I'm rather sleepy now, but I want this idea out of my head before I forget it, so I'll just put some gibberish together hoping I shed some light upon thy you.

First question: What was the last anime OF THIS SEASON that surprised you the most. In other words, the anime that you started to watch because you've heard bad stuff about it, and the ended up liking it, or in some cases, you went on an adventure and started watching something you knew nothing of.

Second question: What was the anime that has EVER, IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE[/u], surprised you in a way, so hard, that you end up asking yourself who you are, 'cause you knew so little about your taste in anime.

I'll start with the first question answered: I'd have to say, it's a tie between Gatchaman Crowds and Silver Spoon. I got both shows delayed in my queue 'cause I wasn't sure, then, I watched episode 1, then 2, then 3, and soon enough I'm listening all day long the opening and ending of both shows, and screaming GATCHAMAN everytime I watched and episode.

Second question: I'd have to say, My Little Monster wins over two serious contender, which are Mysterious Girlfriend X and Say, "I love you". I just didn't know I could like so much a romance and comedy anime. Totally blew me away.

Goodnight

Free!, I never realized how easy it was to troll people. I type something, and they gave a shit. Obvious trolling should be obvious.

I'm surprised Summer 2013 didn't deliver.
Last year's lineup was gold.

Second question:
One Piece. The thing I used to hate became
the best shounen / action / adventure anime hybrid I have ever watched.

For this season, the most surprising were Eccentric Family, Silver Spoon, and Watamote. I was going with Gatchaman Crowds for awhile as well....but the final few episodes kinda killed it for me although I still enjoyed the show overall.

surprise of the season... Sunday Without God, definitely. such a beautiful anime.

genre-bending self surprise? hm... not really sure. I'm pretty confident I know what my own tastes are, so I'm not really surprised when I either like or dislike something.

Surprise for the season? Ill would say Watamote but i knew it would be insanely funny.
Another one would be (surprise!) Sunday Without God...i really don't like that anime. All they had to do was stick to that first arc and it would have been decent. How the hell am i supposed to care about a character's death when i have no time to learn more about him? Sigh...

For this season, definitely The Eccentric Family for me. When I first read the synopsis (and even when I first saw the opening) I thought I would hate it. To my amazingly pleasant surprise, it turned out to be one of my favorites of the season. Depending on the ending, it may even earn a spot on my "brilliant series" list (which doesn't really mean anything - just series that I personally thought were brilliant lol)

For all time, I guess i'd say Fruits Basket, which was the first non-action oriented anime I ever saw. Watching it made my jaw drop. Not because it was so blindingly amazing, but because it was unlike anything I had ever seen in my life. It was the first time i'd realized that anime is a truly amazing storytelling medium. It was also the first anime to make me cry. Prior to watching it, I thought all anime was pretty much like Fullmetal Alchemist, so you can understand why I was so surprised when I found what I now know is called the "shoujo" genre.

nothing really stood out this season for me

of all times hmmmm Girls and panzer when I first heard of this I though "great they mixxed moe with tanks this is going to suck" but I was wrong it did work I loved the story which flowed smoothly the battles were great and not over the top. I found myself cheering the main team on in the last battle lol a pink tank patton must be rolling in his grave

Hmm, not much of anything surprises me, really. Honestly, the only one I can think of recently that was surprisingly good was Flowers of Evil. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. And Straight Title Robot Anime seemed to get a lot of hate. Honestly, I didn't see it. Some of it was mediocre, but it was cute enough to enjoy.

But those were from previous seasons. So.. nothing. At least not yet since I still have one or two I might pick up.

As for the second.. I can't think of anything. Maybe Flowers of Evil, even? I did think it was going to be a complete bore fest at first, but it actually was pretty interesting. I'm glad I chose to stick with it.

This season? I think WataMote was the most unusual shock. I saw it and well, that was unexpected. The show is totally not the long-running deep kind, but it somehow stands it's ground. The plot won't last long, so they gotta keep the Humor up, and so far they're doing great.

How did My LIttle Monster beat out the likes of Mysterious Girlfriend X? My little Monster had quite the solid opening I'll give you that, but once I realized it was aimed towards women(due to the over-romanticization of romance...and the main guy? Seriously? Mr. Perfect and Mr. Abusive at the same time? Yeah....and the face? Women love that face) and the show itself was unable to properly end I greatly lowered my opinion of it. It had this feeling near the last three episode where the studio was probably told "Hey, make sure you don't end it conclusively, we might get another season!" which hurt the early episodes focus on quick conclusion romance premise.

So what amazed me the most? Hmmmm. Easily Ranma 1/2. While I had seen tons of shows, and knew tons of things about Anime. Ranma 1/2 was the first which I had to go out of my way to watch. I bought the first season just to watch all the episodes in english, THEN I got the following seasons...altho past the 4th it's not worth it.

But around that time, I had seen many an Ecchi anime. Dokuro-chan...Shuffle was out and seen by that time, Various Ecchi that're so bad, I can't even remember the names. Cliches were in full ass swing here, and I had seen at least 3 series that year which the Girls either got stronger when naked, or got naked because they're stronger than their clothes.

Then Ranma 1/2 comes along. And I see ACTUAL NAKED GIRLS IN AN ANIME.
I was shocked.
And then the Gender-bender plot? I was like WOOOAH, thats straight up H right there. That's just....woah...I'm liking it.

And then the show wasn't H at all, it was a Action/Comedy just like Dragonball was...and they both gladly take up half my shelf nowadays!
Seriously, Anything Goes Martial arts? Strong-ish female characters? A male who wasn't some pushover, but a Casanova who'd go out of his way to make sure his Harem was intact, because he's so concerned that having one of the ten girls after you lose interest was a fate worse than death?

If a girl told Ranma she never wanted to see him again, he'd propose on the spot JUST TO PROVE HER WRONG!

Ranma refused to ever hit a girl!
So he turns into a girl, and beats the shit out of her, cuz when he's a girl it doesn't count.

Ranma....is an asshole, a really likable asshole, but discribing his actions or listing what other characters think of him will always read poorly.

Mardock scramble
Rating: 9/10
Comment: Pretty awesome take on cyber punk this was well worth the wait, cool fights, great art, unique story, enough said.

This season...
Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou (Day Break Illusion)
Rating: 8/10
Comment: Only other series that's a lot like madoka magica falls short on the twists but delivers perfectly with the despair.

Left the strongest impression.
It's a tie between berserk and ef a tale of.

A lot of people got surprised with Watamote. I myself watched it for one episode, but then dropped it. I mean, it's good, yeah, but not so earth-shattering. Maybe when bored I'll give it try. The thing that didn't surprised me was the animation, maybe, and, for the first episode, the predictable storyline., Ahh yeah, the characters. But I'm no here ranting about it.

You know, My Little Monster surprised me 'cause it was the first shojo I've watched, the animation, the color, the storyline kept me cheering and laughing all the way. Maybe, if I'd watched Mysterious Girlfriend X first, that would've surprised me to the end of my days. You have to have some past in anime-watching before you get to fully understand how awesome that show is. I must say its more like an adcquired taste for us anime fans

The show that surprised me this season was The Eccentric Family. I had heard nothing about it but decided to try it out because I wasn't watching anything else on Sunday. It turned into one of my favorites this season, right behind Watamote and Silver Spoon.

As for most surprising of all time it would be Usagi Drop. It got me into slice of life shows, which is now one of my favorite genres.

So, The Eccentric Family has a lot of happy viewers, same as Watamote. I might get a look at it.
