A lot of people got surprised with Watamote. I myself watched it for one episode, but then dropped it. I mean, it's good, yeah, but not so earth-shattering. Maybe when bored I'll give it try. The thing that didn't surprised me was the animation, maybe, and, for the first episode, the predictable storyline., Ahh yeah, the characters. But I'm no here ranting about it.

You know, My Little Monster surprised me 'cause it was the first shojo I've watched, the animation, the color, the storyline kept me cheering and laughing all the way. Maybe, if I'd watched Mysterious Girlfriend X first, that would've surprised me to the end of my days. You have to have some past in anime-watching before you get to fully understand how awesome that show is. I must say its more like an acquired taste for us anime fans

Yeah. Watamote's first episode was standard amazing, nothing out of the ordinary. I didn't keep watching, but after showing the show to my sister, who relates with Tomoko far FAAAAR more than I do, having the same hair, height, general interests, and taller younger brother with whom she talks with(I'm the taller older brother, so I'm not represented unfortunately).

Never seen other Shoujo like Fruits Basket? I know it's old but....it's like a classic.

Mysterious Girlfriend X is a straight Sheinen however, and was HIGHLY unexpected from my end of things. The 80's art style with the modern animation quality really works for me. The realistic relationship has far more weight than the romanticized.

The fact that Shoujo and Seinen have such strong overlaps in demographic has always amazed me.

Really, this is the first time I've heard of Fruit Basket. I'll check it out. And actually, the reviews here on CR kept me away from Mysterious Girlfriend X for a very long time. The first episodes, maybe 'till 6th, I was disgusted with the drool thingy, yet drawn even more to the insanely realistic plot. The relationship its uber relatable. Take away the drool and you have more of an slice of life. As you've well said, the realistic relationship its what haves more weight in the show, 'cause their love is not very common on Shoujo series. I'm waiting furiously for a second season.

I guess we grew up differently, how dare you.
That said, I know Fruits Basket as being the first Anime I saw on DVD, everything being VHS for me when my sister and her friend brought it over for her to watch.
Being the first shoujo we saw(with Sailor moon being the only other we knew) it was rather unique....and extremely Girly. It was rather odd. It's a fun watch and IT'S THE BEST SELLING SHOUJO MANGA OF ALL FRIGGIN TIME(i'm super subtle ain't I?)
The drool thing was actually that got me interested. It was odd, unique, something to draw attention. The Drool is simply a metaphor for um....other stuff. I mean, do you know how much drool is exchanged during a full on kiss? Does drool on the finger really compare to tongue performing rape on the mouth?

Yeah, the realistic relationship is more a flagship of Seinen titles as I'll never shut up about. It's not so much the love itself, but how the characters treat it. In MGX, it's physical. The physical relationship between two lovers is rather important, and Shoujo glosses over that part(with good reason)

That's also why I like Toradora, the two heroes of the show happen to always be in physical contact. Other characters in the show consider them as such with how close they seem to be, physically that is. They hang out, and while they hang she's leaning on him, propping her feet up on his head, laying down in his lap. It's not intended to be a lovers thing, but it becomes that, made the relationship feel more real.

MGX is about building that physical relationship, and I like it.

Oh, and it's NOT going to have a Second Season...they do have an OVA however. I was surprised it got and English dub and I have a copy, the english dub is rather well done. The anime itself is in a niche demographic, with a niche-appeal, with a strong niche fetish that disgusts casual viewers.

That drool is what makes the series stand out.

It's also what insure it will never have the fame it deserves.

For this season, Free!. I heard alot about it on tumblr and whatnot so I decided to check it out, expecting it to be boring. But it really surprised me. Free! is one of my favorites of the summer season. Actually, in general, Free! has surprised me. I never thought that I would enjoy a sports anime. Now I'm considering watching Kuroko's Basketball...

A person must watch, at least, one sports anime in his/her lifetime. I'm glad you've interested in that type of shows, always motivates their viewers to get into some sport, and thats great, I suppose. Personally, I haven't watched Free! 'cause of the references I've heard and read, yet, I haven't even como close to the Free! review page on CR, so I'll admit I'm a little biased towards it. I'm expecting too much Yaoi in there.
The first sport anime that impressed me, well, was Slam Dunk... Incredibly funny and all-around cool, not quite relatable, but had the super-awesome animation that couldn't compare to Super-Champions (thats the literal translation here in my country, I don't know its original or world-wide name), keeping the distance dispite the time difference.

I agree with you on that the drool keeps people away, leaving a lot of anime viewers out of its reach. Ok, yeah, the drool might be a good metaphor, but it doesn't stops being a little crinching (at least) when you watch it. But, I guess other lot of its fanbase get to see it drawn by how unusual the drool thing is. Its like one of a kind. A special niche you said, and you're right, but I would've be glad if more people would've watched it, so that we can have a second season. I've read the manga, and there's still material to use. The Ova didn't cover too much, besides, the show's episodes are based on different parts of the manga, so maybe, from that point of view, could be a little hard to put on a second season.
I don't know.
The thing that we can all agree (I guess) its that Mysterious Girlfriend X its a manga and anime thats earth-shattering, genre-bending super awesome series that its not for your casual viewer. Either you'll love it, or hate it, there's no middle ground. Of course, people can convert to anime watching this, or other people will stay away from sometime.

mine for this season would be The Eccentric Family. definitely didnt stand out when i listed the season's list, but hey i fell in love since the start. nice way of telling story, nice setting, and it was definitely a surprise from PA Works, like, they can actually do some comedic fantasy slice of life as well. definitely my favourite series from the studio and favourite of the season.

for all time, it would be those good shoujo.
but i reckon for shoujo genre characters are really important.
Chihayafuru -- didnt think blend of serious sport with hints of romance is great
Uta no Prince-sama -- be it based from otome game, it can be great through the power of music (and voices of/relationship with pretty boys)

Special mentions to Shinsekai Yori -- idk, it feels special, the way the plot unveils is always a charming point to shows with darker genre. i would always be surprised by how far you can twist stories. similar to Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

and Shakugan no Shana -- it woke me up to the tsundere world

1.That would be Gatchaman Crowds.I thought the show was really good.I liked the characters, animation and art and especially their soundtrack.Seriously, I can't stop saying "GATCHAMAN!" (Runners up are Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya and Free!,I honestly thought both these shows were gonna be crap, but to my surprise, they were both better then I thought)

2.I think that would be Puella Magi Madoka Magica, cause I was never really into the magical girl shows (the only show I seen before madoka was Shugo Chara!, which I thought it was alright, but I was still not into the whole magic cutesy girly type shows) but thanks to madoka,I have started to like the magical girl genre and even appreciated it, and madoka is one of my favorites, so kudos.Runner up is My Little Monster! since I never really cared for highschool romantic comedies, but this show is one of those major exceptions (other exceptions are Fruits Basket and Kimi Ni Todoke, but none of them surprised me as much as My Little Monster!)

I'm rarely surprised. Mirai Nikki gave me a few chuckles, though. I didn't think it was very complex, and I felt like I could read Yuno quite well. I loved the feeling I got when she said, and I paraphrase "These people can die if they're not Yuki's friends," and when she stared through the mail slot in the door, and when she (important episode / plot spoiler ahead)

I wasn't entirely prepared for these moments, and couldn't help but laugh like "Oh shit, that's... hahaha, awesome."

You're right on that aspect of gatchaman crowds. I can't stop listening that opening and ending theme, its too col. That I never imagined. I mean, I liked anime before, but never, in my life, downloaded a song of a show (the endings of evangelion rebuild doesn't -maybe- 'cause they're movies xd) and listened, like, all the time.

It's funny how Attack on titan doesn't appear on any answer yet xd

Maybe because people are talking about shows that first started at the summer season while Attack On Titan started at the spring season or maybe because the fact on how much people are enjoying the show isn't really that surprising unlike something like gatchaman crowds, which at first didn't interest me and I thought it was gonna be crap, but eventually I actually really liked the show (might even be one of my favorites of this season)

I never actually watch anime during the season that they actually come out in, so I'll just skip to the second question.

Mine is Revolutionary Girl Utena. Really great show on pretty much every front. The story is exhilarating, the art style is unique, the duels look super cool, and it is the kind of show that will get you thinking after you watch it. I was expecting a cheap Sailor Moon cash in, so this one really surprised me.

I was hoping that Attack on Titan might fall in the second question, or atleast, the fact that no one has named it is what surprised me. That as of now, people haven't been mind-blown by it, considering the huge amount of fans the show has, theres must be alot of people out there that wasn't your usual anime watcher and might got turn into one 'cause of this show. Personaly, It got me to watch anime more frequently (college stuff kept me away of current shows) but didn't blew my mind, nor was the surprise of last season to me, as I didn't have anything else to compare it with.
