Hello everyone,

I'm opening a new thread as the one I found existing was locked and couldn't post.

I know it is not a new anime but I'm just getting into it watching the series on CR (Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse) and trying to find more information about the series, background and if anything *new* is happening...

To my understanding there has only been one anime series (the one on CR), a number of novel/adventure games and a few mangas that I can't find officially translated into English.

Does anybody know more or can point me to the right direction? (Oh yes I did try Google but there is so much outdated information out there).

Many thanks!

Kostas

I got a guy who knows all about this! He's currently pushing me with all haste and hell to complete'em.

I'll get'em in here to point you in a direction, but you'll have to wait a bit.

Rather than opening your own thread I wish people would check the greenlit thread. That's a good place to go usually:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-796191/the-current-list-of-greenlit-anime
You'll see there was an announcement, vague but something for Muv Luv anyways. Not sure if it will be Muv Luv or Alternative or what but something is planned.

No spoilers.
Fun fact.
The author of attack on titan is a huge fan of muv-luv.
Since imaginarycreatures and pinoytantei already added a lot and covered the basics i'm only gonna cover what they missed.
The reason i frown upon total eclipse so much isn't just what they covered, it's actually much more..
Such as flight in general and how fuel is more of a joke in the TE anime than it is in in the original content.
The size of beta being exaggerated.
The number of beta obviously underexagerated .
The lack of "beta hives", meaning not a damn one.
The very heart and soul of muv-luv only being present in the first two episodes minus the hilarity and romance.
And just the very fact that it basically ignores what made muv-luv so great in the first place...
Mystery completely clueless of how fearsome the enemy actually is and genre shifts.
I mean seriously if i was to list off all of the genres and how much difference there is extra, unlimited to alternative i would probably be spoiling a lot.
Total eclipse entirely ignores this making it so a newcomer would basically only see a generic mecha vs aliens anime.
Instead of a carefully structured masterpiece.

I mean don't get me wrong it's pretty good for a mecha if you count it as not being muv-luv but... compared to the trilogy it's an eyesore it's an insult it's crap.

Also don't try to read the manga it's available but the only one of the series that's faithful so far is alternative unlimited isn't bad but it's missing an important arc and also quite a bit of dialog, and extra is just something else entirely..

Also the game engine rUGP is amazing.

Not everyone does this and muv-luv continuing is quite bizarre it's still a justified question.
Everyone seems to believes it's gonna be Schwarzesmarken which since age basically was leaning towards animating this or total eclipse it does seem highly likely the other three likely possibilities are the day after, altered fable (spin off), beta-girls (spin off).
Though i have reason to suspect kouki is planning something huge all of the merchandise for example has mainly been pointing towards the trilogy recently.

I'll try to keep it short, but:

Muv-Luv is a pretty confusing thing to work out. The anime Total Eclipse is a spin-off of one of the original games. The original works are a duo/trio of visual novels released by a company called age several years ago: Muv-Luv Extra, Muv-Luv Unlimited, and Muv-Luv Alternative. Extra and Unlimited were packaged together originally, I believe just under the name "Muv-Luv". Alternative was originally going to be part of the same package, but due to its incredible length (and budgetary concerns), it was released separately. Extra is *extremely* different from the others, and doesn't seem related at all at first. It is a fairly run-of-the-mill moe game built on a fairly generic harem premise. It isn't bad, but it isn't really good either. It is mostly known for starring the densest main character in the history of eroge. However, you have to play it and get the main two heroines' endings to play Unlimited.

Unlimited is much better, overall, and follows much of the sci-fi premise that would define the larger story of Muv-Luv. While, since it is an eroge, there are multiple heroines, there is only one route to follow in the game, and all that changes are the romantic scenes near the end.

Alternative is generally considered the best of the series, and takes place after Unlimited...sort of. Its hard to explain; needless to say, even though it is definitely my favorite of the series, it is vital to play the preceding games first to get the whole story. One note: Alternative does contain some scenes of intense gore. And all of the games, being 18+ PC games, do have some sex scenes, though they are brief, and relatively tame (though still porn, so...YMMV).

There are fandisks, side stories, and the like, released as visual novels, light novels, and manga, with varying quality; I don't have that much experience with them, though, so, I can't really give recommendations. Alternative is relatively easy to acquire; you can purchase it from a number of online sites for $80-$100. Extra/Unlimited, due to its age, is a bit harder to find; the 360 version is fairly readily available, but I doubt it would play on a US Xbox, and translations wouldn't work for it. All three have been fan-translated by Amaterasu Translations, and are quite well done. It might take a bit of work, but they are worth checking out.

Hello! Big fan of muv luv here to help! Muv luv is my favorite VN of all time and I'm always happy to indoctrinate new people to the flock.

First, I want to mention that I don't think it is a good idea to start with Total Eclipse as your first foray into the world of Muv Luv. I really enjoyed Muv Luv TE, but I suspect if you have no familiarity with Muv Luv you won't enjoy it as much.

The TE light novels were created as an advertisement for Volks' A3 line of TSF figures and therefore the story was planned to be fairly simple. But when TE started to become popular, they decided to expand the story. As a result, the beginning of TE starting with episode 3( 1 and 2 are anime original episodes meant to explain Muv Luv to new viewers.) is pretty slow and it doesn't really pick up until episode 8. There is also the fact that Satelight didn't have much of a budget to work with to animate TE so visually it doesn't look all that great. It went from looking like this in the VNs:

to this in Total Eclipse:

If you want to get into muv luv start with the original trilogy(Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative). Here are two guides to help you:

This is a list of all the muv luv works, although it is a little outdated( currently Muv Luv Altered Fable and Alternative Chronicles 01 are partially translated):

Looks like you got a lot info! That's great. In the future please post such inquiries in The Anime Help Thread, since separate personal threads aren't allowed.
