I just like her personality best. and her body.

yup.

Laura's the cute tsundere, so I like her, too.
Rin is... a little on the irritating side, but she's ok I guess. definitely better than Cecilia and Houki.
Houki is tsundere, which I usually like, but she's far more on the tsun side, which I don't like. most of the time she just comes off as a possessive bitch.
Cecilia is an elitist snob, so I really don't like her.

I dunno I rarely see the Charlotte type in anime, which is kind of refreshing. She is sort of like if you took the main character's best friend in all the other harem animes, you know, the one who is for some reason usually voiced by Yoshino Hiroyuki, and you made him into a heroine. I think that is part of the reason why people like her so much, because she contains like the perfect balance between friend and love interest.

Tanamachi Kaoru from Amagami and Nonoka from Photo Kano kind of fit that spot, but those aren't really harem animes since it's 1 girl per universe iteration.

I guess I understand that.

So the friend trait falls into 2 categories: childhood friend and other friend?
^ Serious question.

I also have to wonder how much of why people like Char is also due to her being voiced by HanaKana.

Yeah, I don't consider childhood friend and normal friend the same. Not between a guy and girl in anime at least.

Childhood friend usually doesn't include the "buddy" aspect of friendship where the girl has the same interests etc. as the main character. Usually it is a "We've known each other forever and I am in love with him/her so I want to be with him/her all the time" type of thing.
--- An example is Kaoru and Rihoko in Amagami. Rihoko is a childhood friend, he knew her since they were young, they have totally different interests and barely hang out anymore. She pretty much just likes him, that is all. Kaoru on the other hand has been with him since middleschool as a buddy type thing with that other friend of his, and rather than them always being in love, they just kind of realized they like each other while hanging out.
--- I don't know any animes that have a childhood friend who is also a normal friend.

To tell you the truth, I don't think there is any hanazawa character that I don't like so, I really can't answer that question. She just always voices really likable characters. You know though, I think I would like her just as much, as long as she was voiced by a voice actress with a smooth voice, no matter who it was. Tomatsu Haruka, Itou Kanae, Noto Mamiko, Hayami Saori. If you gave me someone with a bit of an abrasive voice like Toyosaki Aki though, I don't know.

I watched the first episode of season 1 and got annoyed. Doubt I'll watch more. The "comic" violence against a guy for not doing anything wrong... just not funny to me.

Not sure why I was expecting something better.

I will say it right now, you are right. This show pretty much sucks except for two characters, Laura (German Chick) and Charlotte (French chick). The main character has like 0 character development, and the other 3 girls, Houki, Ling, and Cecilia are really one-dimensional characters. As a show in its entirety, Campione, Kore wa Zombie Desu ka, Highschool DxD, are much better harem animes. Still though, I like those two girls, so I will continue watching.

As a new viewer who hasn't seen season 1 I've learned this much from the 1st two episodes

1) Ichika seems to be the only guy at this school and thus the only guy able to use these Mecha. Is there a reason for that?
2) Most of the Mecha seem to be individualized and easily identified. The Army grunts at the end of episode 1 seem to know who they were up against just by seeing the mecha, before getting splattered
3) The Girls seem to represent different nations, suggesting this is a UN program or something
4) Harem Lead is particularly dense despite being clear target of every girl in school.
6) Laura is best Girl

4: He is scared to be around so many girls in one place. in this setting men are viewed as weak and need protecting.

Men/Women Roles are reversed in this setting.

now this is really interesting to me.
Can I assume it's because of the Mecha? How long have they been around to influence things that much?

Can't have been too long. If Ichika is a target for DNA acquisition because of his quirk of being able to use a mecha that sounds like a move by the Old Boys club to regain the throne.

I can't remember if there was a specified date , other than the IS coming of age. I just remember a female pilot laughing at Ichika when he mention getting stronger to protect everyone. The girl says something that was before the IS was invented. Laura doesn't just joke around by calling him her bride. In the ova, the girls are shocked with his behavior at home. They view him as his sister's wife.

The image that was shown when talking about the development of the IS was men launching in space. Something about soon after it was discovered that only women could operate the IS. Plus, Tabane invented them.

I am fond of those shows as well. Not, counting their LNs , I don't see all their characters being drawn out as well. Everyone loves Laura , right? Why? People have stated cause she isn't like the other girls. She is a German solider that had augmentations to keep up being first in her class. I believe she was the only girl that is in the military. A weapon that was created. Laura detests and plans to murder Ichika due to her love of his sister/instructor. People make the argument about Cecil. I mean it is not strange to go from wanting to show up someone to gradually having interest in them, than hey I want to kill you but I want to marry you now. I find her the least likable. She has her moments after turning a new leaf but as the main love interest? As everyone 's favorite, I can't see it.

I like all the girls, classmates, instructors. But I still feel Charlotte is the most genuine out of them all. That is just my opinion, which really doesn't matter.

Good to see the student council president (SCP) take the kid gloves off and run Ichika through the ringer. SCP was definitely trolling Ichika with that outfit she was wearing when he entered his own room. Not quite sure I understood why the title of the episode was called Heart Pain Killer though? Unless it was in reference to the SCP calling out Ichika for being weak. Idk.

The patriarchy seems to very much intact which is why charleotte was taken from her mother and then raised by her father, why they were so surprised to see how subservient and domesticated Ichika was for his sister. The IS situation has only been going for 10 years or so judging by character ages, and the world seems to be in a cold war. Obviously there are shady dealings, and things seen to be in motion from unseen factions. Specifically with the attack of an unmanned IS(supposed to be impossible), and the fact that Laura's backstory revolves completely around IS.

I prefer to think that Ichika can pilot one because hes just that big of a vagina.

I don't know. In Campione - Maria, Liliana, and Erika were quite developed as characters right along side Godou. I actually thought it was very well written. Ena unfortunately got shafted in the development department because they kind of crammed her in.

In Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka - Haruna is kind of one dimensional, but everyone else has a lot of character development, even Ayumu's secondar character friend, Orito. Seraphim, Eucliwood, Sarasvati, Tomonori, even those other minor girls get quite a bit of development.

Highschool DxD : Again, just about everyone gets some form of character development even secondary characters. Good sign.

In Infinite Stratos though, for most of the series Ichika is just some stereotypical oblivious nice-guy main character. Cecilia = win Ichika over with sex appeal. Ling = complain out loud that Ichika is interacting with other girls. Houki = Try to approach Ichika, but always ends up getting angry at him.

Houki got a little bit of character development at the end of season 1, but that is pretty much all just been washed back.

Laura changed completely and is still trying to find out how to meld into normal society, unfortunately using the otaku knowledge she got from her superior officer.

Charlotte had a reciprical type of relationship with Ichika in the first season. She trained Ichika with using guns, he helped her overcome her family dilemma and gave her a place to belong. Then the fight against Laura and Houki was the best episode of the series, I don't think I have ever seen 2 characters demonstrate better ACTUAL teamwork in an anime before, it was beautiful. Charlotte pretty much solidified her position as a well written character right there.

Unfortunately, when I see any scenes with Houki, Ling, or Cecilia, all I really see are tsundere, who the hell knows what, and tits. That is it.

Charlotte is the main reason I'm watching this show. I just can't stand how annoying Rinn, Houki and Cecilia are. Laura and Chifuyu are awesome too. I really look forward to them introducing Tatenashi and Kanzashi though.

I actually like Ichika as a character, I think that if they gave him and Dan more 'bro-time' together, it would really help develop his character. It seemed like Ichika only really had any meaningful character development when he thought Charles was male. That's just my two cents though. I really look forward to this season.
