I've always been curious, what it takes to create a visual novel and if anyone on here is similarly interested in learning how to create one and collaborating on coming up with a story and the art work.

ps it's my first time writing on a forum so i'm still shy

This might be in the wrong section but regardless:

I've also been curious about this. I know they have to draw up the art and such, write the story, but I've always wondered how it all comes together myself. I've thought about creating one before, but never really tried to follow through with it.

I have started watching NHK and it's what got me thinking about learning how to create a visual novel, i thought this site would be the best place to talk to people to see if anyone else would be interested in a project to create one

That said, Visual Novels have been made by amateurs before. And a fair amount goes into it. The forum here isn't the greatest place to look for info, but it's not bad in the slightest.

The primary question is "have you played a Visual Novel before" and "what visual novel was it?"

Visual Novels are like real novels, only you need a Writer, Editor, Art-person, Programmer, and well...branching stories. You have to write one story for every different contengency!

Don't get me started on the optionals! Voice acting, Sex scenes, combat systems, marketing/promoting. Online and free it may be, but you have to get the word out to get it played!

Google up Katawa Shoujo if you want to see a good Fan-made Visual Novel. It's also free to play and download, and is a real blast to play. It's also far less generic/cliche than most, you have the tropes sure...but it's not japanese, you can tell. Japanese do LOOOOOVE over beating on the same tropes, even if they're good tropes. I"m playing Muv-Luv, and great production values aside, it's generic like white on bread.

It's a lot of work, and I even know of a few works that're in progress, altho I don't think they're all the help-and-hire type.

The visual novels I have played are Clannad and Air (didn't complete it in the end due to a poor patch which left a lot of the text untranslated which has spurned me on to learn how to read japanese), I've been looking for more visual novels to get more experience with them. I've had a look at the Katawa Shoujo website I'm going to give it a try , thank you for your advice on the whole subject it's definitely put me in the right direction.

IT's a fun game, good luck with it, AND THE REST OF YOU TRY THE GAME OUT.

I've enjoyed the Visual Novels I've played and I wouldn't mind helping create one. I'm not too good at drawing,or programming, but I do like to write. You guys could recruit, or just go with who's willing to do it now and create a group for it, if you want.
Also, I know Ren'Py is a software you could use for creating one.

Renpy is probably the most famous one for making VNs: http://www.renpy.org/ ~ There's already been a bunch of great games made with this! And if u decide to use Renpy, u can recruit people on the Lemmasoft forums: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/index.php

Ren'py is updated every few months. It has a good amount of user-created guides, and there are active users who can help you. Some people like tools such as Novelty or ONscripter-EN, but it's tougher to get support and advice. And while you can use commercial software such as RPG Maker programs, they might make your task artificially difficult.

If you choose to write a visual novel, keep in mind that you'll need dedication. The more you plan to write, the more you'll need time, energy, and focus. Also, keep in mind that you can write whatever sort of story (or game) that you like. Don't let any pre-established expectations hinder your creativity.
