True, although for characters I will start with a rough sketch to get an idea of the character before going into cg to model.

Also, most of the characters went through at least one revision where I would draw over the WIP 3d model and make changes to the proportions. These first draft model sheets were usually made from characters who didn't have any hair or accessories. After these first pass model sheets were completed I would finalize the design of the head and model the hair and accessories.

Before final rigging of the entire character I would create a rough rigged version reflecting the character's final body proportions that I would use as a sort of mannequin for the costume design.



For the ships, I did a bit of sketching on paper and then conceptualized those sketches using very basic 3d geometry to get a feel for how the ship was going to look. After which I took those 3d rough models into photoshop to develop the idea further.

My eventual goal is to get to a point where I'm a good enough artist that I can keep the characters on model no matter what angle they're drawn at and just use really basic cg models to speed up the animation process. Until then, I'm stuck making more detailed models to help.

Quick preview of the Pirate's bridge, I wanted it to have an older style feel to contrast the simplified look of the Noble's bridge so used a lot of fighter jet cockpit and space shuttle reference.

Pirate's bridge is complete! I'm going to go ahead and design the Pirate's mini mecha they use for raids on other ships first so that I can gauge how big I need to make the cargo bay.

Last one for tonight. Finished with the Pirate's mech model sheets. Now it's on to the Red Ship's cargo bay and then I can start Storyboards! Animation's right around the corner guys.

Hey Unitizer,

Things are looking pretty cool so far and it's nice that you keep your thread updated! I think the characters are interesting and the environment designs are neat. The one thing that I would suggest is that though Jean is looking hot, I think her facial features (especially her eyes) are looking a bit too Motoko Kusanagi from GITS (1995)


I think that even just scaling back on the tear ducts may help lessen the association. Have you figured out her costume yet? ;)

Please say "hi" to your wife for me - I grew up watching Doraemon, which is an awesome kids show!

Actually that resemblance is intentional. I wanted to pay tribute to "GITS: The Movie" as one of my main sources of inspiration early on, so I take your comments as a compliment!! I've seriously scoured over the movie and my book of layout images in order to mimic that style as closely as possible. I don't quite think I'm there yet, but I'm happy with the style enough to move on to animation.
