I was just wandering how much does music in games matter to most people. I recently bought a game with a huge amount of extras (levels editors and such) but to fit it in they removed some of my favorite tracks of the game. I now only play what is considered to be the inferior version just because it has a bigger and better soundtrack making me realize that I won't enjoy a game if it doesn't have good music :\ what do you guys think?

Soundtrack is a massive part of gaming, anime, series and movies to me, without it stuff just wouldn't have the same effect.
I always end up downloading my favourite tracks from video games and anime on top of playing/watching it, but I guess that's the whole point.~ (^_^)

I prefer very smooth flowing soundtracks usually of three types... orchestra, electronic orchestra (mixes in techno/synths), and triumphant orchestra (mixes in brass)

There are exceptions to this of course but my main preference is a soundtrack that can really fit the emotion of the moment and the style/theme of the game while lurking in the background rather than being in your face.

Games with soundtracks I like include:

Demon's Souls
Metal Gear Solid 2-4
Valkyria Chronicles
SOCOM 3

But the music really does matter for me as what separates the good games from the great games is all the little things... the soundtracks, the sound effects, the small details. Things that people usually don't even notice that once removed would make a great game just feel rather bland.

Not much, as long as it's not completely irrelevant and terrible.

Music is very important as sound is often the most memorable part of a video game. The Final Fantasy series probably wouldn't have been so successful if it wasn't for it's soundtrack.

It depends on the game and genre. I don't expect Uematsu-level work in, for example, Angry Birds.

Anything that doesn't detract from the gaming experience is fine; anything that enhances it is bonus. Once in a while I run into a superb soundtrack.

agreed really depends on the game

thats right i expect all fighting, side scrolling beat'em ups to have extremely good catchy music

if not then it only mirrors the games further flaws...

but then again there are some games that just give you amazing OST no matter game nor genre!!!!

also i have a great expectation from games that can get actual music to have good music i.e any skateboarding game, any gta or sandbox equivalent such as the true crime series, sleeping dogs

The soundtrack is one of the most important parts of a game for me. They're usually the part of the game that's most memorable for me and it's a part of the game I can always enjoy long after I've stopped playing it.

I'm also another one of those people that listens to game music just as often (or sometimes more often) than "normal" music.

I usually don't pay much attention to the music at first but most of the tunes get stuck in my head after playing for a while (RPG's especially). That's when I start looking for the OST's.

Personally I don't consider the soundtrack a game maker/breaker. But that being said, a good soundtrack will most definitely have a huge impact on those that already enjoy a game for it's gameplay and/or story.

The best example I can think of is Chrono Trigger. Awesome gameplay and great story, and then there's the soundtrack. I must have listened to every cover of every song in that game several times.

So yeah, gameplay and story are what draw me into the game, it's the soundtrack that keeps me coming back for more.

I guess it depends on the game as well rpgs constantly have dramatic moments and long game play time where as fps need short memorable tracks.

Try playing Mass Effect 1 without music on. Oh my.

As for blast from the past: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6VpX-feA2M&list=PL063D6A41130EFEFC Imagine playing the level when you get the machine gun for the first time without this soundtrack.
