hi everyone,

I'm gonna try to create a discussion about a topic that is so delicate, that you have people left and right throwing words at each other trying to defend their point.
after almost 3 years of being an active user, i decided that it was time for me to move on and to stop using Facebook.
Why i did this? I was spending big part of my day scrolling through my news-feed, liking photos and different posts and commenting on my friends's posts. At some point it was consuming me. I had to know what was going on with the life of people whom I haven't spoken in like maybe 2 years. Every "like" and every comment was like a judgement made by a group of people who u barely knew.
One day i was sitting behind my computer doing the same thing that i did everyday and then i hit me. I went to the settings and deactivated my account. You can say the change was instantaneous and made me think a lot. I realized how much time i was wasting on Facebook doing nothing. Of course the first days were hard because I when on internet and i was like "oh, i don't have a Facebook". I even got yelled by some friends who were asking how was I gonna survive without Facebook. I told them "that's exactly my point. I'm against the idea that we can't have a normal social life without Facebook" I don't need 400 friends who I barely talk to. i'll rather stick with the 5 friends i see on a daily basis; those are my true friends.

I also searched a little on the internet and found different stories and their perspective about this topic.
It was nuts. two videos, one original and the other a response to the original and people commenting about what they thought was right and what wasn't. It looked as if they were having a religious debate.

Re: Get off Facebook http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQPUA4LEcjI

But don't get me wrong, I love the internet. Otherwise i wouldn't be posting this here.
Also i do take this as a personal problem. I'm not saying that everyone should get off Facebook. I have to admit that Facebook is a great tool in a world where Social Network has become such an important part in the daily life of everyone.

So what do you guys think? Do you think Facebook has become such an important thing that we can't live without it? Do you think that the world has blindly given it self to these monster? or Do you think it's something that you definitely have to learn to control?
How much of a impact is Facebook in you daily life?

I have never used Facebook. Never will, either. I find the concept to be somewhat....narcissistic and ultimately uesless. Twitter, too. Sites like LinkedIn on the other hand, are actually useful for me.

Facebook is simply a way to have the smallest interaction possible with people from the past of your life; that is all it should be.

Anyone who thinks of it as the be all of socialization are rather silly. Most people I have regular contact with use Facebook as a parallel to texting eachother; a chat service or a simple way to share information with a small group of people.

Ofcourse I have loads of random people on my facebook that I barely even remember. I also have "friends" that update their facebook with pointless folly every hour of the day, but if this is how they want to use facebook that is completely up to them. I just believe that it is a simple way to make contact with my small group of friends while still having old friends and acquaintances readily available to talk to if need be.

Read a book.

Facebook comments are as worthless as drunken bar chatter, without the redeeming possibility of getting a new STD.

I deactivated my account 3 yrs ago plus I'm not that interesting to make regular posts and I don't care about my "friends" post.

I've never gotten into that Facebook craze, mainly because I don't have many real life friends. And I don't like the idea of adding someone I don't know as my "friends".

The same way I've never gotten into the handheld phone craze, I mean, I got a handheld phone since I was 14, I used it way before anybody in my school even used it. But I've never developed an addiction to it like most people in 2013 are developing.

Part of the reason could possibly be I came from humble beginnings; I spent the first 8 years of my life in a third world country, I was never dependent on technology; washed my clothes with my own hands... So I doubt I would get into an obsession like most people in first world countries are developing when it comes to technology.

I'm a new Facebook user, and I mostly use it to play a couple of games. I only have family, one friend (real), and my brother's mother-in-law as FB "friends" I don't click like on everything I don't feel the need to share much, and none of that is personal info. It's like hey look at this, and they'll just have to trust that I've seen it.

I'm sorry FB friends, but I keep the sharing to a minimum.

I hardly go on it...maybe twice or thrice a year? I'm thinking of deactivating it.

I still use it to talk to friends who live out of state.

Facebook can become an important thing depending on the person, everyone has a different experience on it due to everyone having different friends.

I check Facebook every now and then daily sometimes because it's a communication tool for me to talk to friends that I can't contact unless I call their house or cellphone. I've always IM'd with my friends so it's no big deal if I don't phone them.

Plus, if I did what you just did by killing off my account. I'm basically burning all the bridges to the people I know, I feel like later on in life. It's best to keep some of these bridges.

Edit - Missed those last two sentences... sorry.

I use it almost exclusively as a way of having some internet level of contact information out there (to a secondary email/skype not my phone number or anything) for anyone who needs or wants to contact me and doesn't know how. If anyone tries to communicate with me through Facebook I usually direct them away from it.

Facebook just doesn't seem to be very social there is no unified discussions or anything... just a bunch of noise.

Those who play 'social' games through it are really missing out as well as those games aren't very social at all. They don't foster any direct communication and they don't facilitate people with similar interests to have any meaningful discussion. I have found that I am closer to people who I have never met than some of these 'friends' on Facebook.

Overall it isn't bad to keep in touch with people on the fringe of your life but it does next to nothing as far as building new bonds and you know...actually being social.

I stopped using Facebook awhile back, I don't see Facebook as a social networking site because I rarely have any social interaction there.

Facebook stock is up 92% year-to-date. That's all that matters to me.

Facebook revenue is expected to double to 18 billion by 2015. They have a massive database of personal information that they can sell the advertisers. Sans this thread, Facebook is EXTREMELY popular despite privacy concerns.

LinkedIn stock is 250.00 per share at this moment and it's not even half the site that Facebook is. Even if Facebook ends up like MySpace, their databases & IP are worth billions.
