I performed a search for this topic, and it did not yet exist, so ... here it is. I am not the biggest fan of CGDCS shows (aside from Azumanga Daioh), but there are quite a number of them, and there are many fans of them here at Crunchyroll, so it seemed like a good idea to put up a topic where the fans can talk about their favorites, shows that are underappreciated, etc.

Your thoughts, CR?

Yeah I'm kind of a massive fan of this genre. I recently bought a used copy of the DVD box set of the out of print Azumanga Daioh. Made me so happy :D

Most of the reason I love Crunchyroll is because they get streaming rights for a LOT of these series.

Here's something I've been curious about:

Most fans of this sub genre acknowledge Azumanga Daioh as a main player in it's formation. I've been sort of on the quest though to find anime that predates that though. Like maybe from the 90's? Anyone have any thoughts on that? It's kind of hard to find since most series I find seem to be more on the spectrum of romantic melodramas.

I still have my original 6 DVD collection of ADV printed Azumanga Daioh DVDs. good stuff. yea, I'm not a huge fan of moeblob genre, but I like cute girls doing cute stuff when the show itself has more going for it than just the moeblob. azumanga daioh had it's comedy, which I loved. then there's characters like this season's Fino in Yuushibu who wouldn't be too out of place in a moeblob show, but since it's not a moeblob show, I enjoy them greatly.

I love cute girls doing cute things shows! Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star were my first exposure, and I also loved Kinmoza from the previous season!

A good one right here on Crunchyroll i'd like to throw out for some who may not have heard of it is GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class! That show was amazingly cute and taught me some interesting stuff about art lol.

I'm a fan, but like aidenraine, only when the show is also good on its own merits. In most cases, that means it has to make me laugh, since most CGDCS anime are comedies.

As for it not working with a male cast, it could probably be done, but I think the all-male comedies that are already out there suit the premise much better. I'm lookin' at you, Cromartie High School.

I tend to like "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" anime, although the 'cute' aspect has little-to-nothing to do with my liking them. I tend to smile and laugh pretty easily, so I find most CGDCT anime to be funny, even when others find them boring. I really don't mind if such a series goes for humor and nothing else as long as it makes me laugh, though I find that my favorites in the 'genre' (for lack of a better word) are the ones that try to do more; a recent example of this for me is Stella C3-bu.
The same applies if the cast is male. I didn't care much for Nichibros, and Free! didn't look that interesting to me, so I didn't watch it, but I enjoyed Kimi to Boku and Tsuritama quite a bit.
As for Azumanga Daioh, I have some pretty fond memories of it, but when I really think about it, I realize that some of the episodes were kind of re-hashes (3 cultural festival episodes, 3 beach house episodes, 3 sports festival episodes). I might re-watch it when I get time and see if I still like it as much as I did the first time around.

Cool Dudes Doing Cool Stuff (CDDCS), perhaps? Except that covers a large percentage of all anime. Hmm.

I noticed this, too. AD seems to have originated this sub-genre, and I can find no other examples that pre-date it.

Hmmm...

Well some of the early Giant Robot and Magical Girl animes had elements of this.

GunBuster had high schooler (big surprise) giant robot pilots and the Main character had to deal high school as well is learning pilot.

Project A-ko had over the top fights between a girl implied to be the daughter of wonder woman and superman, and another who was an evil genius to put Wyle E. Coyote to shame. all over a third girl who might have been the original useless loli. In between fights, and alien invasions, and the evil genius's dad stealing her 'clothes', The trio (who all were some kind of cute) could be found doing cute things.

I'm sure sailor moon had the occasional episode where the heroes didn't really need to summon their costumes...

While they didn't exclusively have cute girls. Shows like Maison Ikkoku and Kigamure Orange Road. were defiinitely more about day to day living and situational comedies than a lot of their contemporary shoes.

but come to think of it.

While cute girls have been present in anime throughout anime. and cute things ditto... the specific non-romantic, slice of life, seinfeld-esque 'show about nothing'....hmmm....

I think you're right. AD was unique in it's time and difficult to describe since it was before anyone coined the term 'cute girls doing cute things'

Meanwhile, as I wait for comments from female anime fans that hate CGDCS type anime shows.
