Personally. It doesn't matter. They are two different shows, each with their own ways of presenting things. It's not fair to judge one show with another. They are in the same category but have different ways of doing things. SAO was great in it's own way, as is LH so far, and it will continue to be.

Basically. Just watch and enjoy instead of comparing each other. And don't watch as if you're judging all against .hack// ...you'll only ruin the show for yourself.

I played WoW and Runescape and I got good at them. I don't have an issue with either anime and their portrayal of MMORPG's.

It was clear that SAO was more about people and relationships than MMO's by episode 3. Why would I fault an anime for not accomplishing what it didn't set out to accomplish?

Enjoying Log Horizon more than SOA, maybe its cause I am a massive MMO nerd and the more you add MMO term wise the more I love! Dont get me wrong, they are both really good just... well... They talked about Tanks/healers and taunting and well I cant resist! ;D

Whine whine whine. I'm gonna quote someone from the LH thread who made an excellent point.

Rena-Ryuuguu wrote:
Also, a lot of the reason that SAO didn't seem a lot like an mmo is because, imo, the main point of the books is that [revealed at the end of the Aincrad/sao arc (the first half of the anime)] the creator of the game Sword Art Online was trying to create another world/reality, not just a game, which is why they had the death threat and no magic and didn't deal with a lot of game/mmo aspects, because it was supposed to be like another reality.

This idea becomes more and more expressed as the novels go on, because the main point of the novels isn't majorly about an mmo, it's creating another reality, which is probably why there was also more about romance and such

That's right, the fact that SAO was an MMO was non-essential to the story being told. If people were disappointed by the lack of "tank-dps-healer" and other such MMO jargon, that's because of their own expectations (i.e. not SAO's fault).

Also, as a GW2 player with a TON of friends who migrated from WoW or similar games, I never minded the lack of stereotypical MMO terminology, because it is (for the most part) obsolete in GW2.

Short form (What I've Said All Along): SAO wasn't about what we thought it was about.

Agreed.

The shows are way different, comparing those two is like comparing Gurren Lagann and Gundam. You just can't do that.

I think the whole thing with Log Horizon is that Shiro is a strategist, not a front line fighter, hence the need to explain the game mechanics in great detail. Less need in SAO, because Kirito would just solo a raid-boss when he got angry. Designed to be a challenge for a large group, but Kirito got slightly angry........

Ok, maybe I worded that funny. You can do it, but it's like comparing apples and oranges. That's basically what I'm trying to say.

Not a fair comparison.
SAO, like .hack before it, wasn't a recreation of an existing system, but rather, visualizing a new type of gameplay.

Whereas, Log Horizon is entirely founded in the author's experience with MMOs, namely Ever Quest series.
It's supposed to be a familiar MMO world.

SAO was about virtual reality, whereas Log Horizon is basically "imagine being transported to Norrah or Azeroth which only existed inside your monitor".
LH focuses mostly on finding what's unfamiliar in this familiar world, and how to co-exist in it... or exploit it.
