I've never legitimately seen anyone claim Free! is under the genre of yaoi, but then again I haven't really looked.
Sure, I've seen guys talk about how "gay it is," and how it's "fujoshit," but no one actually claiming that it is straight out Yaoi or even BL, because it's really not. I think what most people are getting confused with are the differences between cannon ships and fandom ships.
Granted all the voice actors have worked for BLCDs, none of the characters are ever cannon shipped together
.

I've also heard the argument from people claiming that ships are wrong, because people are "eroticizing homosexuality." I just feel like addressing that now because I think people are going to address something about ships later in this thread, with a similar mindset. But think of it this way:
Is a homosexual person really fetishizing homosexual people by desperately searching for representation in a world where they have pretty much none? And if one claims that they're pushing their sexuality onto a character because they assume they're gay in a ship, isn't the straight person assuming that a character is straight doing the same exact thing?

I can't find the threads because the search function here doesn't work well.

But before Free! aired, someone made a thread saying it was "yaoi" therefore it should be banned because there are children viewers on here. That thread was closed by mods because they said it should be discussed in the official thread of Free!.

Then after it was aired, a lot of people in the official thread were making jokes about how, "More yaoi for me" etc. That's why I don't even read that thread anymore, because it was annoying.

Aw, man... I hate it when a fanbase makes a show lose credibility.

Nobody is safe when they drop the soap.

Hm. I'm not interested in Yaoi, but I'm not really interested in Yuri either. I like it in anime when its played for laughs either way, but it just isn't my thing. Not a guy thing, just a me thing.

Why does the last couple of sentences make BL sound like it's a problem?

I don't really like how the writer of the article talks as if men are immune to the psychological and physical trauma that comes with being raped.

Also: Free is no more Yaoi than Highschool of the Dead was Yuri.

I don't think girls what BL because they are "scared of boys" or however she phrased it... I'm a girl, and I watch it because, to be honest, it's kind of cute... At least Free! Iwatobi Swim Club was.

'Women enjoy BL because we dont have to worry about rape because in that it only happens to men which means were safe'. Seems like a totally retarded point of view to me...

To be completely honest, I don't understand rape fantasies. I probably never will. The sheer amount of non-con material in yaoi has pushed me more into the fan-generated side of the genre.

is it just me or people generally think rape fiction is ok regarding to girl on girl and boy on boy? So if the same gender rape each other, most people thought it's ok, while it's not. A person's body is still their body.

I also read yuri, and yes to be honest, there is a rape scene as well. The point is? regardless of what gender they are, rape still rape.

Yeah...there is quite a few yaois that have some non-consensual touching. Only a few i've seen have had all out rape. I don't condone any activity that's non-consensual but I think it's appropriate to highlight the fact that this behavior has existed in hentai for decades.

Some people are into that kind of stuff. All I ask is that they let it stay in the show and not re-enact it in real life. If you want to do it in real life, do it with someone's consent. If people learned to respect one another in life, the world would be a much better place. Don't let the fact that there are genres like this make you uncomfortable. Just go watch something else if it does. There's a billion things to do if you're not into it. Just sayin...
