*sigh* Just read the article. I just sum it up like this:

1. Girl gets introduced to BL anime by friend.
2. Girl gets really into BL anime and creates fanfics
3. Girl gets older and dates boys
4. Girl no longer has interests in BL because its not like real life (really?)
5. Girl gets older and investigates why BL is alluring.
6. Girl says its because it takes girls away from real life troubles of rape and violence
7, Girl thinks that the reason BL is popular is because girls don't want to accept real life situations

This is all from the opinion of a couple of people. If that's what you feel, that's fine but people like things for different reasons. I really like romantic anime. I like to see people care about each other regardless of the gender. That's why i like shoujo, gender benders and BL. That's just me. :/

Pretty good summary, actually. I don't really agree with it either, but I suppose I can see where she's coming from. BL is a female fantasy that removes the girls from the picture - for some women, that could be a sort of 'defense mechanism', I guess. Removing oneself from the situation. Especially young girls who are afraid to explore their sexuality, have no other means to explore it and/or just don't understand it fully.

I also like BL for the romantic aspects. Not much into the genre anymore, though, because as the article says, there is a lot of non-consensual material in the vast majority of it. That's something that always bugged me about BL, as well as the unrealistic portrayals of homosexual relationships. It got to the point where I couldn't stand it and stopped pursuing the genre all together. But, nowadays, I think BL is focusing more on the romance instead of the 'fantasy', which I appreciate.

Really, though, the seme and uke stereotypes need to stop. It's just so aggravating, both in that it's disrespectful to actual homosexuals and that it's just lazy characterization. Relationships are more complicated than that!
