Male otakus and their not-so-strange attraction to Yuri
Posted 10/14/13
I consider myself a yuri fan, yet I also like those shows mentioned. (Well I don't really like meganebu, but that's just because of the show itself). But I did greatly enjoy free, kimi to boku, ouran, uta no price-sama, and even Makai Ouji lol.

I can't speak for the fandom as a whole, but I think it's because yuri love comes across as more delicate, and more natural. By natural, I just mean that girls tend to form really close and lovingly affectionate relationships, but in modern culture, that's a little weird for guys to do. I've actually seen straight girls do yuri type stuff in real life, and I have to ask myself if they don't realize that other guys are around taking notice of this stuff >.> Though that depends on how strong your definition of yuri is, as mine is rather generous. But if guys even try to act affectionate and intimate, we're emasculated and labled effeminate sissys by our peers (both male and female) So it's engrained into us to have that aversion toward not only male relationships, but even stuff that's perceived as being targeted at women (including but not limited to manservice). But idk, maybe girls have that problem as well, but I've never witnessed it myself is all I'm saying.

Generally speaking, though, I think it's just a straight up double standard. I don't think it's meant in ill will, though.

It's just a matter of sexual position and preference.

Personally it's not my thing. I just entertain Yuri with a humorous state of mind.

Not much more.

Well put, imo.

Because I want a MakotoxGou pairing darn it! Then again, there are 5 guys, so as long as girly blonde guy goes with super emotional glasses and water fetish dude ends up with shark in human suit man, I guess I could still get that pairing.

Joking aside, I don't mind either. Yeah I prefer Yuri because.....because lol. Though the taboo type romantic pairings across the board entertain me. It's why a certain anime with siblings pairing off only annoyed me because the author wimped out of sticking with it......or just going with the harem ending.

Yeah, I never seen or watched Yaoi ,but I can imagine it's a lot more painful than watching two girls do it.

I'm guessing that it's due to the fact that most anime otakus are male and to see a series that's not aimed at their demographic makes them feel.....I dunno.....like 'HOW DARE GIRLS LIKE ANIMU'....

Alrighty then. There have been a couple of reports about this thread. The opening post is indeed provocative, but so far most folks have responded sanely regardless of whether or not they agree or disagree with statements made there. As long as that continues, the thread can stay open.

I have made a small edit to the opening post (calling out individuals in that manner isn't very nice), and deleted posts referring to that. There were also a couple of off-topic or explicitly vulgar posts that I've deleted.

So, stay respectful, stay on-topic, keep it PG-13, and carry on.

*shrugs*

If the quality of a show is good enough to maintain my interest, then I am all for whatever relationship dynamics are presented, be it F / F, M / M, F / M, F / F / M, F / M / M, etc. You get the idea.

Now, I'm not a big fan of the whole seme-uke dynamic that's common to a lot of yaoi. (Your mileage may vary.) I'd much rather see a relationship between equals ... Or, if they're going to do a dom-sub type of relationship, why not show one that's consensual, rather than the non-con and dub-con that's often cliché for the genre?

Do you think it's right for them to bash Yaoi
or anime with shounen ai undertones though?
