Recently disappointed with quality of many new shows, I began to wonder, did the golden time of anime ended already?

Maybe I am the only one who can`t find anime as entertaining as it was before?

Why I can`t find something that has depth and originality of such great shows like Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away or Neon Genesis Evangelion?

So just a simple question to you folks, what in your opinion would be considered a classic in new, modern anime ?

Puella Magi Madoka Magica . Dark, convoluted, symbolic and with a brilliant, unique plot this was pretty much a classic from the first few episodes.

And yes: I agree with your comment. Older animes are far better than the majority of new series. They had better characters, actual characterization/personalities NOT based on how Moe or cute someone was; better plots with actual thought provoking moments, depth...etc.

In fact, the only thing that you could say older series lacked was not-so-great art. (But then again, I liked the art of a lot of older series - new ones seem to be flooded with Moe/cuteness.)

So yes: there are some new animes that are really good - but if I were to take one year's worth of anime from the past, and one year's worth of anime from the modern era...

Well, it wouldn't be much of a competition.

Fate/Zero

there are quite a few series going this season that I could already see considering a "modern classic" depending on how they go.

Maybe Steins Gate or Psycho-Pass.

Probably will not be considered classics, but they're more similar to those you listed:

Feel like I've heard this before: anime today is not as good as the anime before it. It's not true. We've already been over the quantity/quality ratio argument, so I won't bring it up again. Go find it in the forums somewhere.

I have seen plenty of shows that are deep, original, insightful and moving.

All "classic" means is that something is of high artistic quality & that it has survived the test of time. We can make a judgement on the first part now, but not on the second. There's no telling which anime will last a long time & which will not.

EDIT: Here you go.

I don't want to cause a discussion on PMMM but it is far from being a classic. The only thing that intrigues most lovers is the idea of a tragic magical girl series. Still pretty good for what it was tho.

Angel Beats!
Kuttsukiboshi - 2 part OVA series, Adult Yuri. For an experimental side project they did an amazing job with the story even though it was short and the animation was top quality.
Anohana - A bit campy at times but still very good.

Those three come to mind right away.

Anohana
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Steins;gate
My Ordinary Life
Humanity Has Declined
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

have great potential to be "classics" in the future.

However, I have a feeling that Fate/Zero and many other shows aren't different enough from their competition to be "classic" several years in the future.

(Keep in mind that I'm assuming that we'll see several attempts to outdo popular action shows. So unique writing, strangeness, and interesting directing are needed for something to stand out years from now.)

I wish I could include Saki or Attack on Titan, but there's too many similar shows and there's bound to be more like them in the future.

I feel like anime is alot like current music. Alot of people really complain that music these days are not up to par with the days of Zeppelin, Radiohead, Nirvana, Guns n Roses, etc. And that's true for anime as well. Attack on Titan is alright and probably the closest one to being considered "Classic" but it's definitely not nearly on the same intellectual level as shows like Neon Genesis, FMA, or Code Geass. To be honest, I don't think many animes these days will be considered "Classics" it's just a bad phase but I'm sure back in the old days, there were a sea of anime and only a few shining stars. But in all honesty, many people have said that there hasn't been a great anime in the last 5 years. We just gotta wait.

I mean look at Cartoons these days, the only thing right now that people love is Legend of Korra, but Cartoon Network has really been lacking in the brilliant shows it once had: Justice League, Batman, etc. So it's not just anime
