It sure does.
I thought Soul Eater was amazingly done until the last episode.
I found out later that the ending was different from how it was supposed to be.
Shame.

But on the other hand, a good ending can save a bad anime.
Example of this is: School Days. I couldn't have wished for a better ending!
And the ending to the Endless Eight which was The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
made the whole shitty loop thing understandable at least.

Agreed.

I'd also add "Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom" to the list. I hated that ending.

Angel Beats had a great ending. It was cute and happy. If you didn't watch the REAL ending then its after the ending song in the last episode.

For me, the ending is paramount. If a show is really good and is able to stay good... then completely screws itself on the ending.. then I end up not liking the series all together.

Take Air for example. I liked what is had going, but the way it ended just completely ruined it all together for me.

It is extremely possible for an ending to ruin an anime. Just look at SAO`s ending..... or rather the plot..... or the characters. Meh.

Mate, it was ruined by the time they started repeating the same damn flat-chest joke with the same outcome redundantly. So, basically, it was ruined by like the second episode.

It could have been done so MUCH better and made longer. The series went from having some sort of plot to not even caring anymore.

Think of the ending to an anime, not at the final parts of the final episode, but all parts leading up to it. If taken seriously, the Angel Beats ending was rushed and didn't make much sense. The scenes were well portrayed, but a lot of the information you are given in the first several episodes of the anime had to be forgotten.

When writing fantasy, all of the limitations and rules you give the characters and their world have to be taken into consideration as you finish up a plot. If a fancy vampire man is supposed to die in sunlight and a show ends with him sitting on the beach with his friends as if it's never been a problem after surviving being staked in the heart several times in the last episode. Then, he has a heart breaking scene where he dies of a brain tumor that he just mentioned he had, the ending is bad no matter how touching and no matter how many endings it has.

It's hard to ruin a series when it was never very good to begin with.

Anyways, I'll go out on a limb and say 90% of bad endings don't ruin the series. It's about the journey right?

For an ending to ruin a series it has to be really freaking terrible and I honestly can't think of a series where the ending was that bad.

To me, the worst anime ending was the ending of Mirai Nikki. Both the manga ending and the anime ending was pretty terrible. Even though Mirai Nikki just happened to have an ova, it was still bad. Although, I still find Mirai Nikki as one of my favorite anime. (my profile pic is of Yuno from Mirai Nikki, so i bet you can figure that out cx )

Usually what I tend to see is that anime is very consistent in that if it has a shitty ending, the anime itself for the longhaul was most likely shitty. I have never seen an anime that was godly and didn't have an ending consistent to it's nature. If a show is good, the ending was good, if the show was bad, the ending was bad.

It take skills of the director to direct a good ending....
...It is easy to fuck up an ending...
