every one is forgeting the cast of darker than black.
to use your powers you need to do something that you hate. hei is killing, but the irony is his ability to kill.

also when you think of equivalent exchange theres non other than alchemy.
learning the secrets to alchemy and you'll lose something such as al with his body, ed with his arm and leg, mustang with his sight, and the teacher with her insides.

also i think you should mark the top stating that everything in here is a spoiler because of its given nature.

there are so many characters like that.

2 pop into my head right now...

________________________________________________
Naraku, the main antagonist of Inuyasha, became partially immortal when he rejected his human heart...

Another is Blade of the Immortal, Manji is a samurai who has been cursed with immortality. Only after slaying 1000 evil men will the curse be broken so he can finally die...

many more....

There's Death Note; A person gets a Death Note which allows them to kill whomever they want, at the cost of not being able to go to Heaven or Hell (And I think not being able to truly be happy?).

If the person don't go to heaven nor hell, then he/she will be stuck in limbo/purgatory, right?

Something like that, maybe? :'D The creator said there was nothingness after death, I believe.

Joshua Christopher from the anime Chrono Crusade! He has healing powers, but using them drains his "luck", for him this means his body gets weaker and weaker making him more and more sick: he cannot heal himself only others. It's really sad...

Here's another one from Chrono Crusade: Chrono himself. Whenever he uses his true power, it shortens Rosette's life span; the longer he uses it, the more years shaved off of her life. Imagine the thought of doing that to your most trusted companion. Of course, he always ends up in situations where he has to use his true power to prevent someone else from dying right then and there. It's quite the catch-22.

Bonus question: Off the top of my head, I'll go with Naruto. In the early episodes, he keeps using a transformation to try to sneak into the girls' bath. Too bad for him the girls never fall for it.

Light Yagami from Death Note.

I don't know if you could say that the Death Note is a power, but the ownership must be both a gift and a curse at the same time.

That opening scene in Darker than Black was hard for me to watch, something about breaking bones always sends chills up my spine. That's definitely a hell of a price to pay to use your power. One thing to note is that I don't think all of the prices were things the contractors hated, or were even especially unpleasant. Most of them were just very arbitrary and inconvenient.

Aside from that, obviously being a Valvrave pilot kind of sucks.
