There are a few tropes that can harm the experience for me. I know this is cliche.... But the worst one has to be how everything is set in high school! even when the plot would work perfectly fine, if not better in another setting! Also how are all these teenagers so mature?! I don't know about you but when I was in high school no one acted the way they do in a lot of shows.

What about you? What are some of your immersion breakers?

...When I first read this, I thought it said "your biggest Imagine Breakers", so... umm.......... ahem.

Probably how everything has to be all visual appeal. Nowadays, there are almost no characters that make you admire them for their hardships and actions, not just for their looks. Or something along those lines.

Let's see, mostly it's when the characters are in a normal setting and they suddenly pull out all kinds of weapons. How is a 13yo girl in a skin tight school uniform going to pull out a couple of swords out of no where? i'd say they were like laura croft in video games and used their cleavage to hide everything in, but then they're 13yolds and don't have any.

During a fight:

*opponents exchange blows*
Opponent 1: "Ow, what just happened?"
Opponent 2: "Allow me to explain all my intricate thought processes..."

Or any variation thereof. If you're going to fight, then just shut up and fight!

Yes! Or when there is a super fast pace fight scene but between blows time slows down for them to have this long debate.

how a teenager with zero training can get in a mecha and not only pilot it but win a battle in it

that is like taking a monkey out of a tree and dropping it in a car and it not only knowing how to drive it but win the Indy 500

Exaggerated personalities, which is ALLOT of characters in anime, which is also why seinien is the best for immersion.

When an author makes a character that has piercings, but has zero idea how piercings work. This includes drawing them in the wrong places and unrealistic writing concerning them. It wouldn't take long to research, so it's negligence. I don't care what, cartilage piercings normally go under the folded part of the ear, not through it, and lip rings cannot be left out all day and then put back in later.

More than a trope, it's a specific error that pisses me off.

And you know what else though? When the title is namedropped in the middle of the series or when the characters say something like "This isn't that kind of manga!" Those are distracting too.

When an anime has a filler episode that is completely random or if the fillers go on for to long it makes me lose the story.

In movies, when characters make stupid jokes or "witty" one liners in life or death situations.

In television when characters break up and get together with another character instantaneously.

In anime, when people have a conversation while moving fast and seem to be traveling for miles and miles in one direction.

In all types of media, when the female character convienently has to strip down or start showing skin for some unnecessary reason, ie.
"We have to dive in the water! Better strip down to my underwear!"
"I've been cut! Better make a bandage out of my whole shirt!"
"Time for a shower for no apparent reason!"

Fan service, beach episodes... it's like the director is bringing a big sign in the middle of the show, "Hey audience, don't forget that this is an anime! We'll get back to the story later, but for now we need to remind you that this is an anime!"

For me a beach episode is almost a deal-breaker... it's difficult for me to go on with an anime when a beach episode happens.

Recycled themes, such as the one you've mentioned in Original Post, i.e. High school settings.

other recycled themes:

- high school romance
- vampires
- heroism
- lolita looking girls
- harems
- the lack of diversity in sexuality; everyone is either straight or in a Yaoi anime, everyone is gay. Whatever happened to bisexuality? or other sexualities?

All of these things annoy me... that's why I tend to praise animes that are unique and don't use recycled themes.

Mahou-ka Koukou no Rettousei. All. The. Time.

And then some.

Character: "Hi, main character! You know who I am?"
Main character: "Let me explain what your name means, and what that thing you're wearing is. There's a term for each of them too! Wanna know?"

Character 2: "Hi, main character!"
Main character: "Oh, you're wearing something else! Here's what it is, here's why you're wearing it, and by the way, here's how your power works from a paranormal scientific standpoint. Remember the three or four terms I'm about to mention. And yes, I figured it all out without you telling me."

... As well as the fight scenario pointed out. Except add theoretical paranormal science.

Definitely overuse of fanservice. I can't focus on what's going on if the characters are constantly flashing me.

High school children beating the super-ultra-fantasitic-invincible-once-in-five-thousand-year-genius

and

protagonist plans that make no sense "I think if I smash this computer really hard, It'll do what I want" which work.

and

Villain plans that make no sense (and are usually far too complicated to remember) and happen.
