Does anyone remember the anime Hikaru NoGo? About a kid that learns how to play the game/saves the world or something? Or was it so long ago that it's faded into obscurity?

I remember Hikaru no Go!
I watched it when I was trying to watch all sports anime I could find.
It was a good show, though I never got to finish it.

But what is this about saving the world?
Does the anime really get to that? So random.

It was one of the first sport anime that I watched. I really liked it, but I wish they would have continued with the story.

The show had nothing to do with saving the world. It's a story about a kid with high potential for playing the game of GO, but had never played before. He was possessed by the spirit of Fujiwara No Sai, who had possessed the man known as Honinbo Shusaku. (Shusaku is a real Go player from the mid 19th century, the character in the show is fictional).

Sai remains as a spirit because he wants to play the "Divine Move" in Go. After possessing Hikaru, he gets Hikaru interested in playing Go, and Hikaru's potential for the game becomes clear. The show, in my opinion is very good. It's actually what originally got me interested in playing Go myself. Plenty of humor.

After the anime ended, I continued on the Hikaru No Go series with the Manga. The manga goes til the very end of the series, but it leaves it sort of hanging.

If anyone wants more info on the manga, message me.

I've watched it 2-3 times, and there's a few specific episodes I'll occasionally feel drawn back to.

21-22, 45, 48, 55-56, 58, 68-74.

I'm still really annoyed they've never finished it.

They did those OVAs and wasted time on side-stories instead of the North Star Cup. That was infuriating!

I finished the series 4 times. In my top 3 for sure. I love their growth. No one tries saving the planet, not sure where you got that from lol.

Hikaru was the gateway drug that addicted me to anime. I'd watched some shows off and on before that, but nothing too serious until then.

It's still available to watch legitimately on Hulu yet.

I really wish they would have come out with a separate prequel season filling out the story from the era from when Sai was with Shusaku, complete with the tragic ending.

If you liked Hikaru and you haven't watched /chihayafuru yet, you should start watching that now...

Awesome anime! One of my faves. LOL no saving the world though. Just players quest for the perfect GO game.
