Well, if their reproductive problem continues its course without any solution, we could experience a dying culture. It definitely won't happen during our lifetime, but if Japan stays as conservative and xenophobic as what I've been told of them to be, then that would be the most likely outcome. I'm not sure whether that would be a positive or negative thing to you, but I certainly find that concerning.

To me: Neither. Countries are just labels, and gears of a giant economical machine. To me, promoting culture is promoting difference, and segregation, and I hold those who seek to promote culture in the same regard as I do patriots, sports fans, Justin Bieber fans, religious people, politicians, activists, otakus, racists, sexists, rapists, society, police, salesmen and other enforcers and fanatics with an inflated sense of self-importance. And if it were up to me, there would only be one global nation, one city, where interracial copulation would proceed until only one combined human race was left in existence, as I've imagined a world without intolerance. Because it doesn't matter whether it comes from this side of the planet, or that side of the planet; human achievement is independent of ethnicity and culture. Of course, I have observed the difference between western and eastern entertainment, but the thing is, that I do not believe that these difference must be limited to the separation and isolation of one ethnicity from another. So, all in all, I think that Japanese anime can be entertaining, and that Japanese females can be attractive, but that these things are not limited to "Japanese people" and can appear elsewhere in life as well.

The article doesn't do a great job of explaining what the consequences are for lower birth rates, less marriages, etc.

I watched a documentary on the subject once, and I believe that the major problem it cited was economic consequences. Basically, the population gets too "top-heavy" (too many older folks, not enough younger ones), so the result is an extremely large older generation with no one to take care of them, and chaos in the economy where there aren't enough people paying into social security, taxes, etc, to keep the current infrastructure going.

But idk.

Not only does this pose a problem of losing culture and products, but it also leaves a much more imminent possibility of the economy going to shambles without any working-force age citizens to keep it going. The plan to pack as much fan service into anime as possible completely backfired, and I think the way to fix this is to portray having children as part of their job as Japanese citizens. Spread the bad news around, get them worried about it, and make them feel like they have the responsibility to baby-make. Of course, there would be an obvious problem with social and individual rights.

Honestly, I don't really see that much of an issue. Japan's already overpopulated as it is, so maybe this is for the best.

I think their biggest concern isn't the state that the country is in right now, but the results this pattern could produce in the coming years. Of course I also think that if it ever gets close to that point, the Japanese aren't idiots. If they realize they're population is getting close to a minority, I doubt they'll just sit back and let it happen. I'd say this isn't something I personally am too concerned about. It's just a phase. It'll pass.

BLAME THE ANIME AND VIDEO GAMES! AND THE MARILYN GUY TOO, HE'S KILLING OUR YOUTH!

[/sarcasm]

But seriously, I think it just has to do with the fact that (and I am by no means an expert, I just pick up on shit well), in Japanese society, there is such an emphasis on success and getting a good job/family/other shit that people just go into robot mode. They stop caring about enjoying life and start worrying about they're 401Ks at the ripe old age of 13 (an exaggeration, but it works).

That is why they have a 99% literacy rating (wikipedia, daisiki desu!) and some of the highest suicide rates on the planet.

In short, if they would just chill the fuck down, stop trying to commit sepuku for only getting a B+ on the English exam (why don't schools in the states teach a second language? That would be rad...), and maybe get in a war or two (baby boomers, all day er'ry day), they could stop having to worry about how many people they have.

Probably some sort of instinctual population limit or something like that maybe.

This makes me love Japan even more. I think it's ridiculous that people think you need to experience sex and love to have a satisfying life. I'm a proud, single virgin who would love to live in a place where their isn't any peer pressure to have a sexual relationship.

Japan is slowly becoming my ideal nirvana.

So you wish to see Japan's economy slow crumble as it struggles to figure out to how keep it's population from falling, and it's force of working age adults slowly but sure dwindles?

As an individual, more power to you to support your view and way of life. However, as a massive society, it's a sign of a cultural shift that the country as a whole is unable to figure out. You need humans to make more humans. Not really a way around that. And while Depopulating seems like a small plus at first, the younger generations simply get older, and their are no new ones to replace them in the workforce. (San Robots! Get to Japan). Worst case, the country simply collapses.

This of course is happening SLOWLY, but is it noticeable to a degree. And at a certain point, you can't turn that around. Unless Japan has a major shift in how it views work and the sexes, etc, slowly see this slipping further and further from a strong solution....whatever it may be.

Alot of students in America have hard time learning to be proficient in English, so adding another language would kill them.

Yeah, I know it's kotaku, but the article does bring up some interesting points. Mainly, that Japanese folk are bumping uglies, just no babies. Maybe more use of contraceptives and other birth controls?

Exactly what is the problem here?

Easy: if the birth rate is too low, when people get older there will be less money to spend on their retirement due to a smaller working population.

If this low birthrate persists they face societal extinction.

Also, japan is indeed crowded in parts, but it's not as crowded as many assume. They actually have more land that has remained in it's natural state than they have developed land, because 80% of the population lives on the coasts of Honshu, the main island.

In other words they actually have quite a bit of room to expand thanks to them cramming themselves in as small an area as possible, so there are absolutely no advantages for them having a low birthrate.
