it's pretty much something that's impossible to determine, so there's really no use in trying to think about it.

Agreed, it is impossible to conjecture that there will never be a better anime than we've seen.

But as a general theme, I am a medium-old timer who started out watching anime on TV in the '70s and '80s but I honestly believe the anime being made today is better than my old favorites. I still have my old favorites on VHS and DVD and when I go back and watch them they aren't as good as I remember and in many cases really aren't as good as the anime that is made today if I'm honest with myself. Just because the anime was all hand drawn doesn't mean it looks better.

I find it kind of funny in fact that 15 year olds like yourself (if your profile is correct) and that 20 year old "Anime Viking" like to write about anime from before they were born or when they were too young to watch it as better than what they are making today. Same goes for music...

The best anime that has ever existed is still inexistent.

Well since the top rated anime on various websites (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood) is a series that I dropped, I have to say that determining a "best" is pretty subjective. You could determine these things by majority rules, sure. But I and many others would never agree with such an outcome.

It's also impossible to say that anime has currently peaked since I lack future vision. I do think that new series continue to impress me with their excellence though, so I don't think we've seen the best yet.

In all honesty, I don't think any anime would be considered the BEST anime ever and no anime in the future will be considered the best either because every anime has their flaws. There may be some series that come close to it, but their flaws keep them from crossing that line. It's also a subjective choice too, so that comes into account as well when it comes to which anime is the BEST.

However, if I had to pick an anime that I believe comes extremely close to being perfect/the best, I would have to say Attack on Titan. I'm positive that I will not be the only one who names Attack on Titan on this thread, and for good reasons.

My reasons for picking Attack on Titan:

Reason #1: The Animation/Art - The animation/art is probably the most common praise for AOT because it is just done so stunningly beautiful. Everything is smooth, crisp, sharp, clear and the detail work on things such as close ups on the characters eyes, or the background and the clouds in the sky are just breathtaking. The thick, black outlining of each character also gives a sort of "pop" from the background, and that's not a bad thing at all because AOT did it well. Plus, the CGI was done so well that sometimes you don't even realize it was CGI that was used in certain scenes. The color scene also fit perfectly in with the atmosphere of the show.

Reason #2: The Music - The soundtrack for AOT is one of the most beautiful series I have heard so far in anime. Each track fits in perfectly with each scene and some even bring about emotions and feels that really make an impact on certain scenes, specifically the sad or tragic ones. It has such an emotional and impacting soundtrack that is to beautiful beyond words. I'm not one to buy soundtracks sadly because they usually cost so much money, but I bought the AOT OST the first chance I got. The OPs and EDs for this series were incredible and really hyped you up for each episode and upcoming episode. I would say the first OP was better than the second one, but the second ED was better than the first one. However, they were all good in their own way, both visually and the songs.

Reason #3: The Characters - Now, this is where one of AOT's flaws may come in with the characters. I do admit that of anything from AOT, the characters were the weakest point. The only characters that got any character development were Jean, Armin, and maybe a little bit with Mikasa. Otherwise, all the other characters stayed at the same pace throughout the whole series. However, from what you see happens to these characters, especially with Eren at the end of episode 1, you become deeply connected and attached to these characters, even the ones that aren't your favorites. AOT has a habit of killing of many loved characters, however, so if you get really attached to a character, odds are they will be killed off and you will become devastated. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on you, but I see it actually as not really a bad thing because it gives you more emotional feels that then build up to an epic battle or scene that follows.

Reason #4: The Story - When I was reading the upcoming Spring 2013 anime lineup and read the description for AOT, I was very intrigued about the story. I went into AOT completely blind, having not read the manga yet, so naturally it sparked my interest, especially since it was getting so much hype. The idea of mankind hiding behind these immensely tall walls to stay away from man-eating giants called Titans and how the soldiers who fought them has these cool 3D-Maneuver Gear to help them fight the Titans really made me excited because I had not seen any other anime like it with that kind of storyline (that I have seen that is; there might be others that are similar that I don't know of ^^"). Just this world that they have created is pretty enjoyable and I like how not all the characters are Japanese. In fact, the only Asian character in the show is Mikasa. Basically everyone of every kind of ethnicity lives inside these walls. The pacing for AOT started out very well done, though it really slowed down in the second half, which can count as another flaw of AOT.

I mean, I can go on and on about how this series is close to being the BEST, but a few minor flaws keep it form doing so. Like I said before, no anime can ever be the BEST ever, but there are some that are close, especially AOT. I always HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone because it really is deserving of all its hype and love from the anime community.

So long as anime keeps getting made, we'll never see the BEST anime ever.

Has the best song ever been composed? Has the best painting ever been painted? Has the best movie ever been produced? You can't really categorize entertainment into "best and worst."

I would say more, but if I did, I think it would just be a rehashing of stuff from the perfect anime thread.

You can easily classify anime as the best of the season or year by majority rules (attack on titan would probably win) but the best anime of all time is impossible to find because we have all time ahead of us.

Funny you mention that. I just started watching the 1979 dub of Space Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers), something many my age living in the US remember seeing on TV after school back in the day. Admittedly, I'm watching the bowdlerized dub, since I don't know where to find a sub of the original. But, I can sense that even if I was able to watch it without that extra level of introduced dorkiness, it's definitely an anime from the 1970's. The animation and art is cruder and choppier. It may have been ground-breaking in its day, and I'm enjoying the nostalgia, but, todays work is far far ahead. I don't know if I'd recommend it to a younger anime fan to stand on its own.

I would really like to see the original with a sub, though, uncut, and with original incidental music, to fully judge. The same goes to Planet Boy Papi (aka Prince Planet), technically the first anime i ever saw and was a fan of, back in the early 70's. But I really believe in the end I'd find that, even in their original state, I'd enjoy them more for their historicity than their raw entertainment.

I completely agree. from an age standpoint, I'm not as old as you two, but I still watched westernized bastardizations of anime when I was a kid. Transformers, Voltron, Robotech, Astro Boy, Sailor Moon (was a childhood guilty pleasure of mine), Dragonball (though that wasn't quite as much of a bastardization as the others)... and I do have to say that people who think older anime are better for one reason or another are either looking back through nostalgia/rose colored glasses, or they're just anime hipsters. not saying that old shows aren't as good as newer shows or anything, but newer shows are by no means as horrible as people like to make them out to be.

I also think that as time goes on, the quality of the medium is being refined. personally, I find myself enjoying most of the newer series yearly than I do looking back yearly. 2013 itself has had many shows that I would put in the top tier of my own personal anime ranking.
