I always thought L was the most intelligent, but his sense of what was right forestalled him from being able to utilize his full potential against Kira because he only allowed himself to function within the confines of the law.

The best way to think of this is to start switching roles. Play L (and then Near and Mello, in turns) as Kira while Light plays the role of L from the anime. In the position of L being Kira, I honestly don't think there'd be a competition.

Hell, if L was Kira it's probable nobody would've even caught on in the first place.

Near wouldn't have caught Light in the end if it wasn't for Mello.

I think L purposely didn't choose a successor because he knew it would require both of them to take down Light. In my mind, L was the one who really caught Light in the end.

Light, he outsmarted L.

Near needed Mero's help so it's 2v1 against Light.

AND Near worked off of the information that L left behind

So it was almost 3v1

Light's downfall was his compassion. If he had killed his sister when taken or his father before delivering the Deathnote then Near (and Mello) would NOT have gotten to the point of taking Light down.

Also if he killed the turncoat he could have still had the advantage.

Or even better, kill the turncoat off by making it look like Near was the one who did it! Flip the script!

Deductive reasoning isn't really the only thing that denotes intelligence. So even though L might surpass Light in that regard sometimes (which is debatable), Light is still probably the smarter person all around.

I would say L, hands down.

The reason L lost was because he started his investigation with only minimal knowledge of how Kira could kill / how the Death Note worked. L was essentially playing Russian Roulette every time he took a step towards finding Kira, and it caught up to him in the end.

Near and Mello, though, started with most of the information L had gained. It was not only a 2v1 battle, it was a fight where everyone knew the rules and stakes in play.

From almost the very beginning, Kira knew his own limits and how best to work around them. He was not as smart as L, but he had information from both sides of the battle. That's why Kira was so hindered when he was up against Near and Mello; he had to figure everything out about his enemies from a distance, not up close and personal as he had done with L.

Even though Light is my favorite character, I think L was the smartest. Light did pull the strings the entire time which was amazing. Near did catch Light faster, but I think people keep forgetting that L did suspect Light the entire time. At certain points you could feel that L really did believe Light was Kira, but didn't do things too quickly because he had to be "100%" sure of it and he obviously wanted to know how he was doing everything.
But in the end, sadly, Light was faster....but definitely not smarter or well... it wouldn't have ended the way it did.

I believe light was definitely the smartest out of all of them even in the end but the other guy messed up which got him caught.

ya
idk about his compassion he was pretty merciless in killing people though , who would want to kill someone of his own family?

but he is definitely the smartest IMO, i was rooting for him the entire way despite the fact he was a murderer

To be honest, I'm not sure. There's too many things to take into consideration.

.....Making the world a better place..... as HE saw fit... and by taking hostages by threat of death and killing good, honest people just doing there jobs all because he wanted to play God. Screw Light. Screw Light with a pointy cactus. He wasn't making the world a better place out of the goodness of his heart. He was doing it all for selfish reasons and making the world live in fear. Jesus, that would be like rooting for Schneizel to nuke the whole world in Code Geass because "he wanted to make the world a better place."

I do however have to agree that Light is the smartest character. He out-maneuvered pretty much everyone till the very end.

.....Making the world a better place..... as HE saw fit... and by taking hostages by threat of death [ you mean would be criminals?] and killing good, honest people just doing there jobs [self-defense could be argued for killing Ray Penbar and the rest] all because he wanted to play God. Screw Light. Screw Light with a pointy cactus. He wasn't making the world a better place out of the goodness of his heart. [So if the world became a better place by someones actions that wouldn't matter if the person had a different agenda?] He was doing it all for selfish reasons and making the world live in fear [Live in fear for consequences of criminal actions? - Wow, you better just indite the entire criminal justice system with that logic]. Jesus, that would be like rooting for Schneizel to nuke the whole world in Code Geass because "he wanted to make the world a better place." [Never seen Code Geass, so no comment]
