Cyrus Smith in Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island" was easily the smartest character in fiction that I have ever encountered. There are other characters who are supposed to be smart (Like Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen or Washu in Tenchi Muyo) but a character can only be written to be as clever as the author.

In the book, Cyrus Smith and a band of other castaways arrive on the island with nothing but a pocket watch and a metal piece from a dog collar (which he sharpens into a knife). After a few months, Cyrus builds a civilization for the castaways including agriculture, firearms, telegraphs, buildings, waterways, and even a ship. What is most impressive is that the books describes how he accomplishes these things -- including a basic recipe for nitroglycerine. Verne REALLY did his research to write a convincingly intelligent character (and was rather bright himself).

Harima Kenji, because no one is better than Harima at anything. For those that said Sherlock, you know his brother Mycroft is about 100 to 200 times better than he is at detectiving, don't you. Not as good as Harima at it, but Harima is best at everything.

Character: Eddie Morra
Origin: Limitless

Evidence 1: It is stated he has a 4 digit IQ
Evidence 2: His perception of the world is incredible and is able to see patterns to the point he can predict future events.
Evidence 3: Absolute Recall. No matter how small the details are from his past, he is able to use that information instinctively.

Pak Protectors from Niven's Known Space universe are what came to mind when i read the thread title. Jack Brennan would be one of the smarter ones i think.

i was going to say mid-1970's but according to wikipedia it actually started in 1968 (though didn't become a regular series until 1971), and ran (at least the first time around) until 1978, as part of a rotation of movie-length shows that included McMillan and Wife and McCloud. Apparently there were also some TV movies that aired between 1989 and 2003--so maybe you saw one/some of those?
