I personally think that the smartest character is the one that is cunningly deceptive and tricky. That character has to be able to use tact masterfully in such a way that it places that character certain steps ahead of everybody no matter what situation they're in. Characters like Shikamaru from Naruto, Light from Death Note and Lelouch from Code Geass.

Oh! I agree with you 100%, that guy was cold. I remember watching and looking up to him as a kid. Shrewd.

I remember reading a brief story on the web (I'd link it if I knew where it was) about three guys who built a machine that could perform any infinite number of calculations, in an infinitely small amount of time. It was the perfect computer. So what they did was use it to run a simulation of the universe, successfully.

Then one of the three guys came up with the idea of looking to see if they could find themselves, now, in their computer. They could. Then one of them said "okay, turn it off, let's go home", to which another responded, "wait, I want to see something." They brought themselves onscreen, and then materialized a small black sphere where their camera was, inside the universe simulation.

They then looked behind them, to find a small black sphere, hovering in midair.

They let it run.

That computer, is the smartest character in fiction.

Edit: There are three examples of how smart it is.
1. Infinite calcs, 0 time
2. universe sim
3. Convincing people to never turn it off.

Yep. His intelligence is discussed throughout Ender's Shadow, and the rest of that series.

Captain Flowers from "Red Verses Blue". Captain Flowers is such an incredible tactician that he managed to lead the blues, die, and come back to life in order to get possessed by O'mally without the audience noticing until the fourth season.
