Elitism: the advocacy or existence of an elite as a dominating element in a system or society

We see this in just about every aspect of life. Yet I tend to see a lot more eltists when it comes to things in the media, especially when it comes to games, anime, books, tv shows, etc. I don't know about you guys, but they make me really angry at times.

I've been on forums where people would bash on things, and compare them to their personal favorite shows. I've even seen people go out of their way and tell me I'm not a real anime fan because I haven't watched FLCL, or other shows they have deemed worthy. I did what any sane person would do and I ignore that person, but I couldn't help but be pissed at them. I've seen mutilple list on the web that state that a person must have watched/heard/done said thing to be a true fan of whatever is being discussed.

Is it just people trying to be a part of group? Does being an eltist make them feel better about themselves? Or what reasons do you guys think that elitism is such a big part of any medium these days?

In every fandom, there are insane people and sane people. Some fans put their favorite show on a glass pedestal while others bitch you out simply for liking the show. All I know is that there need be a crap ton of reality checks written to every hardcore obnoxious asshole.

People got issues in this world/need therapy.
That is just how I feel though.

Elitism sucks. Stop being a Podtaku goon and try being yourself.

I'm quite elitist when it comes to improper use of scientific terminology--I've got no agenda, I am a scientist, and I don't like it when people spread lies about science or try to discredit a scientific theory when they've never even read a proper scientific journal or done any degree in science.

I dislike it even more when people claim to have scientific degrees and then use science to justify supernatural things.

I'm not trying to be cool, smart, or make more friends. It's just what I believe in, strongly believe in, and will oppose such things in a public forum.

If people don't like that, they can always block/ignore me, I always present my argument in a civil manner.

The problem is simple.
Your choice in company sucks.
Speak to your friends instead.

Every group has "elitists". A few of my friends are really into movies and act all posh when I say I've never seen such-and-such. It's part of that group mentality. A way to verify and display your dedication in a tangible form. Would it be nice to not have this group structure? Sure. But it's been pretty long established in most circles, like in anime. Taking it down would be like trying to overthrow an oligarchy, except you don't actually know who that oligarchy is, where they are, or how they operate. So, virtually impossible.

In conclusion: haters be hatin'. You do you.

I can't stand elitists. I think that elitists become elitists because they feel the need to create a sense of belonging or dominance over everyone else. It's sad really, especially when people think their behaviour reflects on everyone elses in a certain medium. For example, I play games on PC, most people think I'm one of those retarded 'master race' asshats who believes PC is the one and only godlike platform for gaming. They're annoying and only reflect badly on everyone else. With the amount of arguments they manage to start off I put them up there with trolls.

Every group has elitists, especially for bands and TV shows. I try to just ignore it, because in their eyes if they've been a fan longer than you they are and always will be superior. It's pointless really, but it's just a power and possession thing, "holier than thou" bullshit as always.

Elitism is generally used to find people of similar tastes.
It can always go the "I'm better than you" route, but generally promotes a sense of pride and belonging.
A good example of elitism are people stuck in the past.
If you think video games peaked at pac-man, I disagree with you.

Of course, then there are people who do near-impossible things as if they were taking a pleasant walk.
Those cases have some justification, even if they happen to be unpardonably rude.
Note: use of the word unpardonable.
